Hi everyone, I just purchased a Consew 230R-1. I’m attempting to set it up for doing some leather projects. I’ve been hand sewing everything and wanted to try a machine. (Last time I used a sew machine was home economics in 1999.) I know it’s not the perfect machine for what I’m doing and I should have bought a much more expensive set up but I’ve found lots of positive feedback on this machine and it was in my price range. I have a few questions though. What size needle should I use? I will be trying to go through 2-4mm of leather if that’s possible. What thread size can is best for this and will fit through the machine and the tensioners? Do I use the same size and color in the bobbin? Last question is there a specific type of foot I should use to help with this that won’t mark up the leather? Like a roller foot or something? Some things I like about this machine is that it had reverse, I can change my stitch size and it has the walking foot. Some of the pictures are what I’ve sewn by hand and other projects I want to use the machine for. Thanks for your kindness.

Hello, Leatherworkers! First off I would like to thank you for your sharing your extensive expertise. I read @Wizcrafts' sewing machine thread and have been lurking around this message board for weeks. I've definitely learned more about machine mechanics and specs here than anywhere. I really appreciate the breakdown explaining the various machine types, feeds, walking foot vs add-on foot, etc. I'm a professional seamstress with a market opportunity for alterations in Irish Dance dresses. Think Riverdance. Modern show/competition costumes are constructed with a particular double pleat skirt, with extensive stiffening materials (sometimes plastic or cardboard), on thick fabrics (duck, velvet, heavy satin, sequin, embroidered). This is to create the distinctive flat, sticking-out skirt. The skirt-to-bodice seam easily can be in excess of 1/2" thick. Example of a dress here: https://irishdancedresstoimpress.com/product/dress-11916/ My kids are Irish dancers and since I have done some alterations on their costumes, as well as some friends' costumes (mostly rescues from the damage done by local tailors), I now have many requests. But I can't get that blasted double-pleated skirt-to-bodice seam through my domestic sewing machine. Hence, researching industrial machines. My goodness. I had no idea there were so many possibilities. I asked my group of specialty Irish dance seamstresses what they recommend, but no one comes even close to this group's ability to break down the why's and wherefore's of my options. I'm pretty sure I've narrowed my search to a true walking foot machine with more than 1/2" clearance under the presser foot -- though some of the seamstresses say they are doing fine with high clearance on a regular double-toe foot. Juki was originally recommended to me by a trusted seamstress, but Wiz raves about his Consew machines so much, my horizons have expanded. :-D What I'm hoping for here is maybe to connect with someone with a used machine for sale, a dealer, or any and all advice & guidance the group might be able to offer. I think I will need to buy something used to get me through the upcoming fall seasons and then save up for an "ideal" machine. I know most of my particular craft doesn't apply to leatherworking, but the best mechanical information is here. Perhaps somebody is able to "interpret" my needs, or can point me to a different group that has a closer specialty (but can also explain the mechanical pros and cons). I just picked up a nice used seiko lsc-8bv in Bangkok. Great place for cheap used machines! Its a binding cylinder bed (I believe it is the same machine as the consew 277) and I’d like to convert it to a standard machine - something akin to the seiko lsc-8b. Leather keeps catching on the binder needle plate. Can I just swap the needle plate for the non-binding type plate? It seems I can’t as the feed dog mechanism appears to be completely different. I’d be grateful for any guidance anyone might have on this type of conversion. Thanks!

Hello Everyone, I hope you're doing better than I. I'm having a tough time trying to perfect the topstitch, and reverse stitch on the Consew 255RB-3. I'm getting loose stitches on the backside of my leather pieces when I reverse stitch. I'm also having a tough time when I try to resume stitching after I've stopped to make a clean, professional-looking stitch. I realize one of my issues is having control of the machine. But, even with lack of machine control (I'm constantly practicing), the stitches are not up to par. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Lthrz -

I have a Singer 17-23 with a servo motor and speed reduction pulley system ($400.00) and a Seiko STW-8 consew clone with a servo motor and an oversized drive pulley ($500). Finally bit the bullet and bought a servo with synchronizer for my Consew 226. The motor installed fine and is running good (except it tends to roll backwards at the end of a stitch, but I increased the brake all the way and that seemed to help a bit) the problems started when I went to install the synchronizer. The instructions are horrible but I have a good basic idea of what (I think) it's supposed to go on like. The biggest problem is that the was no bolt on the end of my machine's handwheel. There was, however, a tapped hole. Except none of the bolts that came with the synchronizer work. They are all too big. I'm about to go to the store to see if I can get another bolt that might fit the threads that ARE in my machine, but I'm worried about the bolt being too small then for the connector that I'm trying to bolt on. I'm worried it might slip. Any advice? To give more info, I have a used Consew 226 that came out of a Lazy Boy furniture factory, and a Mophorn servo with synchronizer (looks like all the other China made servos out there) I'm attaching photos of the handwheel of my machine, and the contents of the synchronizer package. There are also a few things that came with the synchronizer that I'm not sure what they would be for. Maybe they can help with my machine, I'm not sure. Thanks for any advice you can give. I guess if all else fails I can just run it without the synchronizer.

I am thinking about buying this old Ferdinand (serial# 988038 ). The seller can't seem to find the model number on the machine. I am told it is a clone of a Consew model, Im just not sure which one. Can anyone help me out? Does $150 Sound like a good price? Thanks for your help. Ive never owned a walking foot sewing machine and Im looking forward to finding one.

Hello everyone! I have been reading here for quite some time and finally created an account, great site! Down to business, I recently picked up a consew 206rb-5, I cleaned and oiled the machine and have gone through some adjustments following the manual to a T. My machine is occasionally skipping stitches (maybe 1 in every 10-15 stitches) and the machine occasionally is ripping the top thread as it pulls back up through the material. I am using 69 thread with a size 21 needle. Typically sewing approx 1/4" thick veg tan leather. I would like to get this fixed as I have a family sew servo motor and 6’’ hand wheel on the way from Bob at Toledo industrial Other info: Needle bar height is set per manual Hook timing is set per manual Hook spacing to needle set per manual Needle inserted and aligned properly Feed dog alignment set per manual Needle alignment with feed dog set per manual Any help is greatly appreciated. -
I wanted to ask for your opinions about some used sewing machines I have an opportunity to buy... I want a good machine that sews thicker thread... These machines have been well serviced in a long standing leather company. I make large totes, wallets, card holders, etc using 3-5 ounce leather. Hello. I just picked up a consew 229-r post bed machine for a great price and am looking to learn some stuff about it. I cant find much help with the typical google searches about this particular machine. The machine came with what appears to be an aftermarket top pulley which I assume slowed it down from stock. It still has the original clutch motor and what appears to be the original lower pulley. I am new to sewing and I'd like to slow it down more than it is now for obvious reasons. How would I go about doing a servo conversion or other method to slow it more with these unknown aftermarket parts? Any specific vendor suggestions for this particular scenario? I'm also looking to see what kind of feet/accessories can be had for this machine. Does this use the same foot as another machine where I can get a binding attachments, etc? I’ve been slowly dialing her in as I learn the mechanics (First part of the video) My first question: is it normal for the feed dog to impact the outer presser foot as it comes up and before the foot lifts? Is this timing or should I grind off the inner back side of the presser foot where it makes contact? When sewing I noticed that my material sometimes gets pressed forward and I think this might be the cause (Second part of the video) My second question: my material is getting pulled and it’s hard to keep it straight. You can see it pulling up (I’m assuming during tensioning) right as the vibrating presser foot hits it’s highest point and begins to come back down. You’ll see the fabric flare up and it pulls it to the side. Can this be fixed?

I have 2 machines with work stations for sale. Consew 206rb-3 and Juki LU-1508N sewing centers. Like new machines in a very well made portable work station that folds up. Each machine is on casters and rolls into a shipping crate that is also on casters. The roof of the shipping crate Unbolts and is used as the ramp for the work station to be pushed into and out of the crate. Setup or teardown takes 5 min with 1 person and no tools. One crate stacks safely on top of the other. Both machines are like new and have been very well maintained. The 206 is missing one of the hinges where the machine head tilts back. Other than that they are both like new. These would be great for someone who has to travel and sew. There's plenty of room for material on the top sides of the machine inside the shipping crate. Asking $2500 for the Juki LU-1508N OBOAnd $2200 for the Consew 206rb-3 OBO I can load on a truck or trailer or I can ship one or both From St. Louis.
