  1. I just got my first sewing machine. Wow, do I have a lot to learn. It's like starting leatherwork all over again. I got a Cowboy 3200 from Bob Kovar at Toledo Sewing. The 3200 is a new machine that they don't even have up on the web site yet. Bob had mentioned that he thought it would be the best machine for the variety of projects I do. So far, it seems to be a very good intermediate machine. I'm sure the machine has it's limits, but none that I'll or I believe most people would hit. Mainly, I do motorcycle bags, holster, wallets, and belts. It is a cylinder arm machine with a walking foot and a combound feed. Set up on a lower table, vs the more common stand. I has a servo motor. Thread sizes are from 138 to 347, I believe. I've only run 207 on it so far (top and bottom). I had a small issue with the shipping. The table was damaged in shipping. I, like most on here, have a day job, so my sister signed for it and didn't notice the damage to the table. Bob was great and set new legs for the table out and I had them a few days later. Of course, like most new machine owners, I've already pestered him with a list of questions. He takes his time and responds to each one. I'm sure I'll have some for you guys too. I'm not sure of the etiquette of discussing pricing, since it isn't on the website yet, but i will say it was the most affordable option for me looking for a new machine. Being new and not knowing how things are supposed to be operate or look, I figured I was better off with a new one. There is a learning curve and there are still some issues I'm having. The one that's nagging me, is sometimes, when I'm done sewing and pull the piece out, it is like the last stitch isn't set in the middle. It's hard to explain, but its like it was set and I'm pulling it out from the underside of the project. Other than that, it's going good. I practiced for about fifteen minutes then sewed a holster. I'm pleased. So, if you are thinking of a new machine, call and ask Bob about the new 3200.
  2. I'm a new member in Orange, California, and would like to discuss with others who use leather sewing machines. I recently started using the CowBoy CB4500 and was initially able to sew 6 to 7 stitches per inch. Now it won't do that. Looking forward to hearing from other members near and far.
  3. I'm having trouble on some of my thicker pieces with the bottom stitches not pulling up through the material, leaving "loops" of thread on the bottom stitch. I'm sure it's a tension problem, but don't know where to make my adjustment. 99% of the time, everything looks great, until I get to the thickness limits of the machine or when I'm making a tight corner. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  4. ferdinand bull for sale in Portland, Oregon $1500 obo. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/5227200843.html email tomahawkportland@gmail.com for more info Thanks Mike
  5. Hi, I am new to the forum and wondering what sewing machine to buy...Techsew 2750, Cowboy 227R, or a used Consew 227. I have never used a leather sewing machine (only my home husquvarna that I am wearing out). I make purses, bags, wallets, journals, etc... things like this. I also tool on 4-5oz leather and then (hand) sew that onto the bag. It is my understanding that any of the above machines will do what I'm needing, I'm just not sure which one to buy. It's a huge purchase and I want to get the right one. Thanks!!
  6. Trying to locate any information on this shotgun shell bandolier. My intention is to harvest the parts and make a new belt so I can put it back to use. I want to check first to see if there is any information out there on these types of belts and if there is any reason not to remake it into a serviceable piece of gear. It fits 12 gauge shells and has no makers mark or any indications as to who made or manufactured it.
  7. Hi could anyone give me some tips on tidying up the bottom stitch. I can't seem to get the right tension. I have attached an image to point out my problem. Looking forward to a reply here is the image
  8. Hi All, I've been trying to get hold of a UK supplier for a 441 Clone sewing machine, I have contacted Cobra and Cowboy who both kindly sent me their contacts for dealers in France and Germany respectively. I would still have to pay for shipping to the UK, does does anyone know of a dealer or contact within UK, preferably south England. Many thanks! Ross
  9. I made a bolo tie from a shed antler with an instructional how to or DIY video! Please check it out and let me know what you think!
  10. Thanks to Constabulary for identifying the OMAC 69-73; which is an Adler clone. As I said elsewhere: I'm setting up a leather workshop in Austria and am looking for the equipment I will need to do so. One of my major purchases will be a sewing machine. And I've spent a LOT of time researching this. While I'd like to think I've learned a lot, the truth of the matter is that, at this point, I know just enough to be dangerous ... to myself and my wallet. Which is why I'm posting here and elsewhere. Better to seek the wisdom of others now than to wish I had later. Since shipping from the States and the UK would add FAR more than I want to spend to the costs of the equipment, I would appreciate any info I can get on good suppliers of industrial sewing machines, other leather workshop equipment, leather, hardware, etc. in continental Europe. (FYI, I will be posting in the suppliers forum as well as here.) I would also appreciate any info anyone has on the HJighlead GC2698-1 sewing machines. I I understood the info on their Irsih/UK website correctly, they're manufactured by Mistubishi http://www.highlead.co.uk/about-HIGHLEAD.htm And from the looks of the machine, it is another Adler 69-373 clone. Pics and specs can be seen here: http://www.sunnysewingmachine.com/index.php/view-all-machines/21-cylinder-arm-sewing-machines/647-highlead-gc2698-1-small-cylinder-arm-walking-foot-sewing-machine-syncronized-binder Assuming I'm correct, it would probably do what I need to do. HOWEVER, I am not going to buy anything that I have not either seen good reviews of written by the good folks on this forum or run past ya'll. Sooooooo ... does anyone know anything about these machines? In particular, what is it a clone of: Adler? Juki? Both? Are they well made, reliable, etc. Thanks! LJ Stevens Maverick Leathers
  11. Hi All, I am at the point where I need to make the step from hand stitching to a machine stitch to increase production speed, although I am having a hard time finding suppliers for the machines I am looking at. A lot of topics in this forum are making me lean towards a Cowboy 3200 however the nearest sales partner for Cowboy is in Germany (as far as my research go's!) There seem to be a lot of old industrial machines on ebay but it is hard finding a machine that is specifically designed for stitching leather and the cost of a Cowboy is a lot having never had a go on one before making the purchase, taking in to consideration shipping costs as well. Plus there are so many versions of each Singer or Juki for example on ebay that is hard to know which one would be best and suitable, there are also people selling machines on ebay stating the machine can work with leather but unfortunately not all of these statements are true. Does anyone know of any dealers based in the UK, selling specificly leather designed machines? It would be great to find someone that deals with Singer, Cowboy, Techsew, Cobra and Juki, plus any others that could be recommended. Many thanks, Ross
  12. Still hammering away, trying to learn this stuff. A special thanks to Particle (Adams Leatherworks)...I encourage any one eager to learn to also go and subscribe to his premium videos...they've been a BIG help to me over the past few weeks! Anyway...here's a couple fresh ones off my bench for a few side arms I had lying around: First, an IWB in Dark Brown for a Makarov 380, with a little border stamping and a FOMI clip that has since been replaced with a 1/8" black Kydex of my own design...the doggone FOMI clip kept breaking...L&L, I guess. Then, there's an Avenger-style OWB in Saddle Tan with white thread and basket weave tooling for a classic S&W 645. Immediately obvious with this one is the fact that I've GOT to get a belt loop punch :-) All of these were sewn on my Cowboy CB3200...still learning it, obviously, but its an awesome machine at a terrific price. As always, Thanks in advance for the insight! Chris
  13. This is a group of holsters I have recently made that I will be taking to some local "Cowboy Action" shoots. I tried to show a variety of looks among this group, with different colors and slight design differences. What do you think of them? Which one is your favorite?
  14. I really like this one. Maybe because it fits me, since I am a preacher! The edges get better with every one that I do. You learn lithe "tricks" and I take more time at certain places in the process. Hope you like it.
  15. This is my latest holster. Solid black leather with black stitch work. Turned out really nice. Has a great look and feel and sits nicely away from the body for quick draw use. Let me know what you think of it!
  16. Hermann Oak rubbed with oil, burnished with saddle soap. Tie-down and hammer thong for keeping the weapon safely in place. I really like this one and the hair-on cowhide strap across the front. Very comfy and the leather feels excellent.
  17. This is my first attempt at a Mexican loop. Black, with full lining, and old coin concho. What do you think?
  18. I've been lurking around the site for a while and recently decided to join so I could ask a few questions and see some informational pictures. Hey everybody! Im a young civil-engineer and ive been handcrafting leather products for friends and family on the weekends and some nights. Some of my gear landed in the right hands so Ive decided to leave my current job and start a new venture. I'm launching a start-up and only have experience with hand-stitching. Honestly, I hate to break away from hand stitching but some products will require it. I need to find a machine to evaluate cost, so I can program it into my line-item budget (my original budget provided to the investors ranged the machine from $1500-$3000. What I'll be making: Handbags; "totes"; satchels; rucksacks; purses; clutches; duffel-bags; Belts; wallets (probably still going to hand stitch these) but open to machine sewing; in-pocket phone cases; luggage/bag straps: Some of these products (30%) will be a mix of waxed canvas and leather, but most will be completely comprised of leather. I'm using Horween Cordovan Shell for smaller items and good quality veg-tan hides for bags. The weight will range from 3-4oz leather for small items to 9-10oz for larger items. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I'm willing to invest in a good machine. I've looked at the Cowboy 4500 and some Juki and Consew machines, but since I have absolutely no experience with machines, I don't know what to get and don't know if I need anything like that.. I've been to several design-studios in the past few months and they all seem to have long arm table-top machine with compound walking feet. I'm not stuck on any machine or any style. I'm up for any and all recommendations. I'll be hiring a few interns who have fashion-design experience and of course multi-material sewing experience, but that will be in 2014... I'd like to find and buy the machine now to start familiarizing myself with it. When I'm in the full swing of things, I'll have to buy more machines as well. However, I need something that is somewhat multi-purpose. I'm pretty proficient in PAD 5.0 drawings/files and also Adobe Illustrator and CAD if anyone ever has questions on that or how that could use it with product design. Disclaimer: highly-technical sewing lingo will fly directly over my head. I apologize for my ignorance,
