--> Beginning of rant. I'm putting this out here in hopes that it will help another seller avoid the stupid mistake I made trying to accommodate a buyers request on Ebay. I'm still on the fence about if this is some sort of scam, or maybe this guy's wife just got angry he spent so much money. Long story short ...A buyer contacted me asking for 5 of my leather holsters to be heavily customized. I agreed with the caveat that since they're customized, they would not be returnable. He acknowledged that he understood they were not returnable. He pays, I fabricate, customize and ship the first 4 holsters, he receives them, leaves positive feedback, orders the 5th holster based on the first 4, then 1 hour after he receives the 5th holster in the mail, puts in a return request for both orders, with the reason "I changed my mind". I replied and told him that I wouldn’t accept the returns. He opened cases with Ebay, who of course immediately found in his favor and accepted the returns on my behalf. I contacted customer service, she read the cases and messages where he agreed to no returns. The moment she pointed out that the return policy on the item itself said "30 day returns", I knew I had lost. Now I get to toss out $300+ of custom leather holsters, that I likely can't resell to anyone else. Here's the lesson learned: Even if the buyer agrees to no returns, if the item return policy indicates it can be returned, you're stuck, and have to accept the returns, even if the buyer agreed in writing not to return the item(s). That individual item return policy has to be set to "No Returns" for Ebay to honor that. The customer service lady was actually very sympathetic, she suggested once I get the returned items, that I inspect them thoroughly to make sure they're in the same new condition that I shipped them and suggested that if they're not, I open cases. But I suspect even if they're damaged and I open cases, that Ebay won't do anything about it. I'm guessing that even if Ebay had agreed and not made me accept the return, he would have likely opened a case with PayPal or even charged back his credit card. I've never left negative feedback for buyers, but I might make an exception in this case. I'm waiting to see the returned items before I make a decision on that. Lesson learned: Cost of this lesson: $300 plus shipping. There needs to be blacklist of buyers that try to screw over sellers. --> End of rant.

Hello, I'm looking for a trusted saddle maker to make me a quality custom saddle. I'm looking for a tough ranch saddle with swells, roughout seat and round skirt. Preferably on the lighter side, but heavy duty. I'm 17 and only work part time so I'm trying to not pay much more than $1,000-$1,500. Any ideas of someone who could make me something like that in my price range? Thanks in advance!

Looking for an estimate for a leather sheath for a Mora companion. I drew up a very rough idea of what i was looking for here: http://imgur.com/UPE1BP5 Basically a 'hang' from the belt sheath, with a band and snap to keep the knife in, eyelet on the bottom to allow me to tie it to my leg with some raw hide. Then on the back of the sheath, two or three bands (i am not sure what would work out better) so that i could loop a belt through it and wear it on the small of the back. Looking for something soft enough that it wont be really stiff and uncomfortable to wear for prolonged periods in the heat of south carolina. Maybe in a nice brown not something super dark??? Hi everyone! i ve been working wth leather and been a member of this forum for a while now but i never really shared any of my projects until now. i have recently designed a mini fat bowie for myself named "The Monster Cleaver" and got it done through ABS J.S. Doug Campbell. After getting the knife done i have decided to make a unique and one of a kind sheath and way to carry it, so i ve started my designing process and came with what i thought was a unique design. Anyways i wanted to share the finish product with you and get your opinions and any questions you might have about the sheath or the knife. Hi there everyone...I've been lurking on this forum for a couple years and never actually posted. I've been pretty regularly posting breakdowns of my builds over on the Leathercraft subreddit, so it felt right that I do it here as well. I post build journals of each piece when they are done both as a form of therapy and also hoping that it might help someone else. This is a simple wallet that I finished a couple weeks ago. There were some new techniques I was aching to try and additionally I had some mistakes and acts of God along the way. This build was supposed to be a standard Simple Wallet of my usual design. I have a hand press now and I've had dies made of the design (from Milwaukee Steel Rule Dies...excellent quality, folks) so I was looking forward to an easy build. I brought a bunch of leather samples and the client chose a combination of Barenia (which, btw, is essentially a double tanned calfskin from Haas that's used by Hermes. Degermann also has a double tanned calfskin that they used to call Barenia too but since Haas trademarked the name they now call it Baranil) and yellow Fil au Chinois thread. I thought it was a good combo and also opted for brown edges. Now...I had worked with Barenia before on a zipper pouchand I loved it so I was very excited and was going to try some new things: With the Barenia being tan and the brown edging I had in stock this would be my first time attempting contrast edging with a new technique for keeping the edges clean. The Barenia was also a little thicker than I like at 1.5mm so I was going to be skiving this down a LOT. Also moved up from an M3000 to a G6M fileteuse so working with new temperatures was going to be a new thrill. I got started by cutting out the pieces using the hand press...AMAZING. Such a time saver. I also feel, ethically, that this is still in line with my handmade and artisanal claims of using no machines in the making of my wallet (as opposed to using an automated machine like a CNC machine or a laser cutter). I got the skiving knife out and started skiving down my edges. I was kinda worried that I was going to have a wallet that was too thick but I pressed on. As I got started working I noticed that this Barenia was...different. My previous Barenia had a milled, almost uniform upholstery looking flesh side while being firm and oily. This Barenia was soft and the flesh side was stringy. Still lovely, same color...but different. I had already been making Instagram posts claiming it was Barenia. I checked with the guy I bought it from and...dammitdammitdammit...he sent me Swift leather instead of Barenia (Front and Back ; Barenia on the left and Swift on the right). I felt like an ass (and a noob) for not being able to identify it and also for selling the buyer on Barenia. Now...Swift leather is still used by Hermes and still has many of the same qualities (some people like it better because it's more scratch resistant). So I checked with the buyer, let him know the situation and he was totally ok with it. So on we went... Once skived down, I put the wax spreader on my brand new Regad G6M, cranked it up to "9" and it promptly made electrical crackling sounds and "pft"...died. The tip. Not the transformer thank God. After some calls around it looks like on the G6M you don't want to push the wax spreader any higher than "7" or it dies (on the M3000 this level seems to be a "9" so the G6M has more headroom for heat). Other tips are ok. Thankfully, Aaron at Rocky Mountain Leather Supply had a used tip and he sent it to me for cheap but in the meantime I used the S0.5H tip to finish the edges. This time around I wanted really really clean edge paint lines. So I basically spent a new step inbetween each coat, cleaning with canvas and a crepe rubber to make sure the lines were smooth and crisp and I was so happy I did. They looked great. Assembly proceeded. The client chose an embossed logo with no gold foil so after that we moved into stitching which went just fine. The softness of the Swift leather actually allowed the stitching to pull into the leather a little too much at the beginning but I eased up on the pressure and things started to look good. Once assembled we started to do the exterior edges. This was a little harder than the interior edges because the edge is a lot thicker, but I was really happy with how everything turned out and the client was as well! That and the Swift leather looked really classy so I think I might do this again. Long road, lots of lessons, happy customer. Pros: New edge paint method works great. Swift leather is a new leather in the stable to use. Hand clicker and dies worked wonderfully. Cons: Check your damn leathers, Kevin. If it looks wrong it probably is. I am a new member to this website, and also a fairly new leatherworker (about 5 years or so). Admittedly this is also my first forum post of any kind. Let me start by saying that I think this site is a great idea, and has been extremely helpful to me (which is why I decided to sign up). The amount of knowledge so freely shared here is amazing. I can't thank everyone who contributes enough for that. The topic I propose is this (forgive me if I am doing this wrong, or this isn't an intended purpose): From reading through posts, I have noticed a lot of tools, techniques, tricks from multi-talented individuals. What I propose is a discussion about innovation. I do not have the means or the tools to produce new and innovative tools, and quite possibly techniques. I would like to get a discussion going about tool and technique innovation going. Perhaps someone has an idea for a new tool that would be useful, or a technique that they would like to try, but can't because of limited means (no machine shop, lack or the tools to try it). What I see coming from this post is this: New ideas: A tool that someone cannot create but may prove useful that someone has the ability to make, test and ultimately gain use from, hopefully manufacture at some point. Seemingly new ideas: Something that seems fresh, but someone has tried before, but didn't quite work as expected. Perhaps they can provide some insight as to why. A technique using current tools: A what if question, but maybe someone doesn't have the tools to do it, but would like to know what might happen if they did. The results that may come from it. I apologize if this post is too wide reaching, feel free to direct me to a post that may have already covered this (I tried to look), or flag it as needed. To start it off, I bought a roller beveler from Jeremiah Watt. I like the idea, but wondered if a tool with interchangeable wheels, like embossing or overstitch, with different patterns (crosshatch, lined, smooth, different angles/sizes) similar to the multiple beveling stamps available would be something useful. The problem I see, on top of it not being quite the same as a fully stamped piece, is depth and contrast. Any thoughts, contributions, criticism is welcome, and I appreciate it. Hello. I'm sure more senior forum contributers are tired of this topic, but... I have been combing this site for information about saddle quality and what constitues quality contruction. I know most experts here hold a low opinion of production saddles, and seemingly for good reason. I have been looking for a quality saddle in a 16.5" seat with "FQH" bars/tree with a budget of $2250 (firm), with no luck. Got close, but no luck. My question for all you saddle makers and repairers: In your experience, are there ANY production saddles that show more elements of quality construction, than what is normally expected/observed? For example, I have been eyeing some Reinsman Ranch saddles - http://www.horsesaddleshop.com/reinsman-ranch-saddles.html The shop manager told me that they use 20 guage seat strainers with built up leather ground/shaped seats, Hermann Oak grade 2 and occasionally grade 3 leather, stainless hardware, Precision Kevlar-reinforced trees w/lifetime warranty, etc. The guy was honest enought to tell me that they do use roofing nails (sparringly) in construction some aspect of the saddle. So what say you? ANy good production saddles out there? I will mostly be using it for hunting, trail riding, and maybe some light roping. I also ride dressage, so don't mind a a balanced seat either. Does anyone know where I can get a custom circle punch made? I would like one for cutting out circles in 8/9 oz leather for some coasters I'm making. I need a pretty specific size (4 1/8"), which is why I would probably need one custom made. I tried cutting one out by tracing a circle with a stencil I made, then cutting and sanding, but it took way too long to just do one coaster, let alone a whole set of coasters. I also don't want to spend a lot of money, so I am not opposed to tackling making one myself, I just wouldn't know where to start. I could use some kind of pipe, but I doubt Id be able to find something with that exact diameter. Thanks, Zayne
