I was contacted by a lady whose husband had hunted 13 white tail deer. He then had them tanned at Uber Glove Company in southern Minnesota. They are just not going to be able to make use of them and decided to sell them to anybody who could make good use of them. She wants $75 per hide. She described them as 11 buckskin color, 1 grey and 1 more yellowish. I use a Cobra class 4 for sewing leather, but occasionally I need to sew a couple of layers of lambskin or deerskin. The Cobra doesn't like that thin a material. Can anyone suggest a sewing machine that is best for that thin a material? Should I be looking for a walking foot or not?

We run a tannery in New York's Hudson Valley named Pergamena Parchments & Leathers. We have been around for a very long time, tanning leather here in the US since around 1840, and going back to 1550 in Germany. It's been a long time since I've shown anything here. In the past 6 months... wow it really has been that long... I made some deerskin bags and I really like how they came out. I know it's not the place for critiques but if anyone feels the need to point something out please feel free. OH and I was out hiking awhile back and came across the left over lunch of a mountain lion! I took the left over deer bones home and processed them. I then used them to make the "ring" and "strap ring" for the white satchel. Hope the link to the gallery works.

Howdy folks - new to the forum. Showing of my deerskin bullwhips, along with a couple of cowhide bullwhips. First up is a white deerskin I just rolled out today. Still needs knots and some minor finishing work, but 90% of the tough stuff is complete. I made this bullwhip with nothing but left overs from previous builds. Here's a pic of the 2nd belly, which was made with black, tan, and gold deerskin scrap strands I had lying around: Here's the finished thong, without knots, at an exact 8': Here's a detail shot of the tapering of the strands: Strands are 5.5mm at the handle, and taper down to 3mm at the fall. I've read a thread about tanning and some articles and they talk about damage to the skin if left untreated for even a shjort time. will the damage go beyond loosening the hair? is there aa timeline on how much damage and uses that can be made of it? above ques if skin has been scraped and salted? what do people use for the scraping anyway? should I grind down something witha special profile? Brain, Bran, Veg, Alum tanning what are the + & - of each method? Brain-some swear by, but what of u don't have Brains available? are there other methods? can I just stretch the skin on a framework in an open shed for drying or is something more needed? will my neighbors complain about the smell? Is ther a "tanning for idiots" book avail?

Hello all, I've tried doing research on stitching/lacing deerskin but haven't found anything relevant. I've made some small deerskin pouches using an old Morse sewing machine with upholstery thread and had good results. I'm wanting to step up to deerskin handbags, but most of the ones I've seen are laced. I like to handstitch my bags (see example pics) and was wondering if that was OK to do on deerskin because of stretching. I wouldn't mind lacing a few but need to acquire a lace cutter for matching lace. Or does it even matter - both are fine and it's just aesthetics? I'm still a newbie and coming up on a year working on leather as a hobby. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!
