  1. Hi all, Glover here based in Canada. Right now I do hand-stitched gloves in sheep and goatskin, lined with cashmere. They're quite expensive, have had a lot of queries for people looking for more affordable gloves. I know how to use PXM and Pique sewing machines (glove machines) but don't own one. Putting feelers out there to see if anyone has something available, such as a Singer 172 or similar. Worth mentioning - I prefer using the horizontal, PXM style machines, and am generally less keen on the pique, post-bed style ones. I THINK there was a German company making clones of the 172 and they actually looked quite good, but can find NO information on where to get one. Also, I need a lock stitch machine, so those nice antique fur overlockers aren't quite right either. Attached are some photos of hand-stitched gloves, for your viewing pleasure! Also, ask any questions you like about glove stitching, I'll see if I can answer them. Also attached is a photo of the kind of machine I need. Thanks in advance, K. Skinner
  2. Hello, live been looking into making a proper pair of above the elbow 1880s evening gloves— which are consistently described as being kidskin. The issue is that the only kidskin I can find is chrome tan, which will not work for a variety of reasons (lack of stretch, lack of dye ability, horrible sensory to touch, ethical objections on my part, etc). Tawed seems to have been in some degree of use as well, going by trade journals and descriptions, but veg tan seems much easier to find and to work with. I’ve not been able to find either, however, and was wondering if anyone had ideas of where I might find some.
  3. Yesterday I found some old garden gloves and they had holes in them. They used to be good and made out of a nice leather so I thought maybe I can make them myself. Unfortunately it's very difficult to make a good pattern out of used gloves. Does anyone have good patterns for leather gloves? It can be casual, driving or working gloves. Hope you all can help me find some good patterns.

  6. Hi all, I'm building a prototype glove for a new business venture. Looking for an experienced leather glove maker to either do the fabrication or at a minimum talk particulars and educate me on some of the finer points of glove making. I have done a fair amount of research on the topic on this forum, and found some old books but it's always nice to speak with someone directly on specifics (for example: sewing techniques for attaching the fourchettes). I am located just outside Chicago if there is anybody local (but welcome suggestions, recommendations or expertise from anywhere!). Thank you, Brandon
  7. I have recently become interested in light leather work such as fur gloves, driving gloves, and similar projects. Being stationed in Germany has brought these and the sewing machines used to make them to my attention. I am almost ready to buy a fur sewing machine and I think I have narrowed down the models I should be looking for but I would like some of your opinions as a sanity check. Ranked hight to low: Bonis (any submodel), Pros: some parts still made and factory support https://bonisparts.com/ Cons: $$$ and hard to find, the only local machine is only the head and they want me to make an offer Singer 46K (probably a 46K26), Pros: a treadle mounted one is near me and it will look great with my Singer 201s. Cons: Parts are rare and $$$$$, not sure how much they want for it. Strobel, Pros: numerous over here, some selling for cheap* Cons: Most are $$$$ and there does not look to me much support one I get back to the US Pfaff, Pros: usually a good brand Cons: not many for sale and $$$ Rittershausen Pros: a few are available for cheap Cons: I can't find much information on the or parts Wakra only saw one looks like a Bonis, no other information Below are the pictures of the Singer 46 I am primarily looking at. Let me know what you think about any of this.
  8. Hello, I have been trying to find some very durable leather gloves for more intense yard clearing. The ones I find at most stores wear out quickly and just aren't that great! Does anyone know where to find the real good quality cowhide gloves that say farmers/ranchers use that can hold up to quite a lot? Thanks!
  9. Here's my project for today-- I am making a heavy leather over-glove to go over some lighter hockey gloves that a couple people in my longsword class use. Hockey gloves aren't the best protection, so if they take a good strike to the hand it HURTS. And if you are worrying about hurting your hand all the time, it's hard to fight well. So I offered to help protect their hands better, and they thought that was a great idea! Here's the project so far: This is the thumb, two pieces wet molded onto the hockey glove and then hardened by hot air blowing over them. (I set them next to the electric wall heater nearby -- not too close, but enough so an hour or so dries the leather). Next step: Got the articulation point in the middle, and a nice curved dish shape, too. Here's a better view of the thumb tip: It curves around the thumb tip very nicely! Details: 8 to 10 oz veg tan, cut from tooling belly (I got them for a great sale price, so I don't feel bad about having to throw away a prototype that doesn't work). Dyes are Fiebing USMC black and Fiebing red. This is the right thumb -- the left thumb is drying off to my left a ways. Next step is riveting, and then on to the fingers.

  11. Hi, I'm hoping to dye the yellow on these gloves black. They're deerskin leather so what method would you suggest to achieve this? Here's a link to the gloves: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K6AKOYQ/ref=s9_simh_co_p60_d8_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=left-1&pf_rd_r=RWR92C8VWWBNYYY32YVJ&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=518516127&pf_rd_i=typ01 Thanks!
  12. I am in possession of a beautiful tanned moose hide, suede on one side, smooth on the other. I am looking for a talented leather craftsperson to transform it into useable items, such as vests, pouches, gloves, possibles bags, etc. I love to hunt and would love to put this hide to beneficial use. I am open to ideas! If interested, please post your email address contact info. Thanks! Dave Portland, OR
  13. Hello everyone, I'll go ahead and put this out there, I'm a 19 year old entrepreneur with the passion of playing the game and making money off the game at the same time. This is my first product being offered in the baseball market. I have dealt with multiple types of services in the market but I have now created my next venture. Being a part of this forum opened up an everlasting supply of resources for me but this is what I am searching for as of now. If you have any info that you would like to share with me, I'm all ears. Monogram machine, preferably used to start out with. Clicker, I know of a few models but not sure if it's appropriate for what I need. Leather softener to make it easier to turn glove inside-out during the sewing process. What kind of lace to sew to bind the two leather sides together. A good felt supplier A supplier for plastic to use on the clicker. That is a start for me, I have gone a far way since I started in July. Now it's time for me to get down to business and start making some real money. If you feel like you can help me out anyway feel free to PM me. In business its all about connections so lets take advantage of that by helping out one another. Alec Kozicki Kozicki Sports
  14. I'm looking for someone to make some custom leather gloves for me, for a costume. Occasionally, I dress up as The Comedian from 'Watchmen' (long story), but the gloves I'm using just aren't right. I'd like to get something that looks much more like the ones used in the movie: http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/21500000/The-Comedian-watchmen-21507912-2560-1714.jpg http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/21600000/The-Comedian-watchmen-21659978-2000-1339.jpg http://www.figures.com/forums/news/9601-mms115-watchman-comedian.html (the thumbnails at the bottom have some good views) I know this is a bit of an odd request, but I'd appreciate anyone who could help. Thanks.
  15. I came across a really good web site that outlines the history of the tanning and glove making history in Johnstown and Gloversville New York. At one time that area was one of the largest in terms of tanning and glove making. Made for some interesting reading as I grew up in that area. What was real telling was the phone directories from over the decades, from the heyday to present time there was a huge decline in the industry. Having lived there I can attest to the severe damage to the ecology that was done by the tanneries, dumping raw chemicals and runoff into the local creeks. At on me time the Cayudetta creek was one of the most polluted bodies of water in the US. Things cleaned up in the 80's but there are a lot less tanneries now. Gloversville was a glove making machine, still remember the factories on my way to the library. It is interesting looking back in history at how popular ladies gloves were at one time. Take a look at the site, it is worth a few minutes of your time for sure. www.gloversandtanners.com
