  1. Hey leathercrafters of reddit! I'm a complete beginner in leatherworking and my end goal is to make a cute purse for my spouse, watch straps and a dopp kit for myself. I have watched videos and I'm reading about the basics, and I want to set my foot in there. I would greatly appreciate tips, tricks, advice, maybe even links? I have a budget of about 200$ to begin with and hopefully make it with the purse, or at least. In terms of tools, I only own rulers a cutting mat and small knives (like x-acto knives). In geographical terms I'd rather use European suppliers to aid with lower shipping costs to me. To be specific, she likes leather products from the big brands, with finishes like the Saffiano, Epi and Epsom leathers. I know it's standardized leather and I might have to put a good penny on it by itself? I'd like to make a lightweight bag, yet have it hold shape and stiffness. I want to add a lining too, but I went lost in all the options. the watch straps I'd like are simple, yet I want them to be comfortable to wear in terms of material that lays on the skin. I'd like to make a dopp kit that js waterproof (or at least splash proof) lined with something soft. I know I'd need a mallet, pricking irons, needles, thread, probably edge dying and finishing supplies, and probably some more tools and supplies. Is there a type of leather, supply, thread, tool etc to avoid? Anything I can cheap out on? Things that are worth the investment? I'd appreciate any and all inputs! Thanks in advance!
  2. Hello everyone I graduated from a leather course where I've used the Durkopp Adler 669 cylinder arm machine. I am looking for a machine that can be comparable to that, but preferably cheaper. I'm making small leather handbags - it needs to have a cylinder arm. I would like to make belts and wallets as well. I would say I need something that sews through medium thickness, is simple and can sew slowly and precisely when needed. I am looking at the Consew Model 277R-3 and PFAFF 335 and Techsew 2600 Pro models at the moment, but I am also open to find a model that is used or just an old type, but not too sure which brands are the most reliable. Thanks for your help in advance Blanka from Montréal
  3. Leather embossing Machine $1200. New, used 2 or 3 times to test only. Comes with lettering system and rolls of foils, padding and tape for plates. I and asking $1300 I'm closing a leather and sewing school. I purchased everything right before Covid. The school never officially opened and now I've decided to sell everything to start something new! I have supplies for leather and sewing. ie. a lot of good quality Bontex! I am located in Houston Texas and Hope to sell locally to prevent shipping. Thank you for looking!
  4. I work as a seamstress for a handbag designer and I am having problems with wavy zippers. I use tape to affix the leather to the zipper and sew, careful to not push or pull the leather as I go. I have tried sewing on paper as an attempt to stabilize but am still having a problem. I sew on an old consew industrial that is serviced regularly. See pictures for an example of what I am talking about. Any help would be much appreciated
  5. How long should a shoulder strap be for a woman's handbag? I figured on making it two piece with a buckle. I figured on making the buckle strap shorter so as it won't sit on the shoulder. Am I on the right track? Thanks
  6. This is my latest work, a handbag for my girl's mom. The poor thing was carrying a cheap leather substitute bag and seeing what I do, she asked if I can make one for her. The bag is hand stitched, made using black pressed leather, veg tan for the upper and lower parts and a chrome crust leather for the cognac parts. I made it to close with a zipper and have 2 interior pockets of different sizes. There is also a pattern available in my shop if anyone is interested.

Steel handle parts are designed to be wrapped with thin leather or fabric, these two halves are then force-fit together with the gold-finished handle attachments sandwiched between. Only the gold-finished end parts of the hardware will show when assembled. Attachment rings to connect the handles to the bag/case are not included. $75 plus $10 S&H via USPS priority mail, domestic shipping only
  9. They discontinued the Tandy Leather Market Place Handbag Kit. I am looking for the pattern that came with this kit. It is not included in the patterns you can download for this pursed from the Tandy site. I f anyone has this, I'll be glad to pay.
  10. Long time I have done anything, years.... Now I've done a handbag from a pattern. Dyed with Fiebing's pro tan dye, then oiled with neatsfoot (unfortunately compound, the pure was in the shed and I forgot), then finished with resolene. 6oz veg tan leather. Lined with black pig skin. Turned out a little stiffer than I anticipated. Some say I should oil first (with pure neatsfoot obviously), then dye, not use resolene. My next project I'm thinking of only using neatsfoot and finish with carnauba creme or mink oil. Any advice is appreciated. Still happy with it though, it's in use
  11. Well it finally happened. My first real project.A Lady's shoulder bag/sling bag. I just have to make a strap for it.

  13. So, staring a prototype for a small clutch (eventually going to do in croc). Pic below shows outer and lining. I’ve glued the lining completely to the two side gussets, but I’m curious if the lining gets fully glued to the main body, or just close to the edges where it’ll be stitched? Also, how do you account for the turn when the main body is folded; do you simply make the lining shorter than the outer, if you’re not completely gluing the two together? Thanks!
  14. I've made a couple of handbags from this original design of mine - all with calf hair on hide. They are popular with women who want high fashion and originality. I would love to get this bag (and few others) into a retail shop. I've contacted a half-dozen retail shops, some are kind and actually talk to me and give feedback. Others I can not get to respond. My attempts have been in person, via email, line sheets deliveries, etc. The handbag is 20 inches at bottom, 11 inches at top. Zippered pocket and open pocket inside. Appreciate any advice --- and / or comments on the bag. Thanks, Teresa
  15. Hi all , my latest bag project , comes with a shoulder strap and lined with natural colour pig hide.
  16. I started new bag. This is what I did today.
  17. Client wanted a small red purse that had this exact clasp on the front, a short strap/handle, and that was about it. I had a hell of a time with the red dye, but I think it turned out all right. 5-7 oz veg tan, Ritza Tiger thread in .8mm red, Eco Flo dye in Scarlet Red (about 3 coats), and about 3 coats of Fiebings Leather Balm with Atom Wax, 2 coats of Resolene, and a spray-down of Saddle Lac. And she's a horse lover and trainer, so I added a little horsey heart charm for some personalization.
  18. Does anyone have the Dawn Handbag pattern? It is in the Ideas for Leather Projects Vol. 2. Thanks!
  19. Hello guys. I've just started my leather handbag brand in the United States and looking for a manufacturer or a company who can make bags for me. I'm in California but it doesn't matter if you are in the States. I have my own design and I can carry leathers, hardwares, and key locks as well. Thus, all what I need is making patterns, samples, and the whole production process. I'm thinking of retail price around $1,000~1,500 per bag and I need really high quality. Please contact me if you know some one or yourself who can make a great quality leather handbags. My email address is <derekhong11@gmail.com> Thanks.
  20. Hey there! I just finished my 2nd bag (1st one was a very simple turned messenger bag) which took me over a month to finish (in hobby time of course). Unfortunately I failed to anticipate how heavy the bag would be before deciding to go with all leather interior. It weighs around 4 pounds but that is mainly because the thinnest leather for the interior i could find was 1.1-1.2mm. The exterior is italian veg. tan leather and completely hand sewn but the interior is from chrome tanned leateher and is partially machine sown. It was also my first experience with machine sewing and adding zippers in general. Please feel free to write your opinion on the bag and point out possible improvements.
  21. I've been making this bag on and off since September due to work have only just managed to finish it.I'm pretty pleased with the lacing and the general theme of the bag considering I've had to put it down and pick it back up at a later date. It is based off a Tandy pattern I copied off one of their Magnolia bag kits (I think). Its also the first time I have used acrylic paints and they seem to have worked well. Have to wait to see how they handle wear and tear. Let me know what you think?
