I am a relatively new leather worker based in thailand. And while my work is only for personal use and/or gifts and my experience limited, I abhor the quality of materials and supplies that I have found in Thailand. For example, I cannot find an outlet for any Fiebings products or any shops that even remotely compare to Tandy Leather. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi, new to the forum and leatherworking in general. I've been enthusiastically perusing this forum, other internet resources and videos for the past couple weeks now. Following on from a lot of the suggestions for getting started, I've ordered what tools I think I'll need, ordered some books and sourced materials. While the wheels are in motion for everything, I'm yet to really pull the trigger on any hardware. Through all the reading/watching/listening I've done, I know what kinds of hardware I need, but then I get to the order pages and am left scratching my head. So many sizes/colours etc. Sizes aren't really covered in any of the learning resources I've come across, which makes sense as I can imagine it really depends on what you're doing. I myself figure I'll start with sheaths, belts and maybe dog collars, before moving on to what my inexperienced mind sees as harder projects, like bags, cases and wallets (I also have a really strong interest in cordwaining, but from what I've read on that I am a long long way off that). I suppose my main question is: what size eyelets, rivets, snap buttons, sam browne studs etc. would you consider essential? In other words I suppose, what do you experienced leatherworkers find yourself constantly running out of and having to reorder? I really just want to have a few of all the sizes I'm likely to use frequently on hand. As i'm ordering most of my stuff online, I'd hate to finally get everything in my grubby little mitts, start a project, then have to stop because I don't have X fastener, then have to order it and wait for it to arrive while my half finished project taunts me in the corner. I should mention, I did order 3 sets of 15mm snap buttons, as it just sounded like a fairly useful size. But that's the extent of my hardware purchasing. Thanks for all the great reading the forum has provided thus far, Rick.

Hi Everyone, I've seen a lot of small scale leather workers with their own custom hardware - that is, belt buckles with their logo cast on the buckle. I'm wondering where to get this done? I think it looks awesome but everyone I've asked won't tell me! I'm not sure why, but anyway - if anyone knows who to go to for this, please let me know. Ideally I'd go for solid brass or stainless steel, and preferably north american as I'm not sure how to handle quality control on Alibabba. Thanks!

Hi all - posted this request on another leather forum without luck so thought I'd try here. I'd like to attach straps to a satchel using what I'll call for now an 'H-fitting' instead of, say, a D-ring + trigger hook (see accompanying 3D sketch of imagined fitting). The idea would be to attach leather to around each of the parallel ends of the fitting, much like one would attach a strap to a buckle. Does anyone know if there is a standard name for fittings like this, if they are even mass manufactured? I've looked pretty hard, but can't seem to find any similar things sold anywhere. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Everyone, I've been hunting all over the internet but I'm not finding any solid guides on what type of metal alloy is best for leather work. Obviously different applications will have different preferred metals, but if anyone can clarify the difference (aside from the obvious finish & colour) between these metals, I'd really appreciate it: Solid Brass Chrome Over Brass Nickel Over Brass Stainless Steel Steel Zinc Die Cast Zinc Plated Iron Nickel Plated Chrome Plated Copper Plated I want to be able to understand which are the best quality in terms of construction, durability, rust/wear, etc. Thanks!

I have been searching high and low for the center piece for a breast collar. I know I can use a plain ring, or a triangular 'ring', but I am looking specifically for the type of triangular piece that has two slots in the top where the shoulder pieces attach and a slot in the bottom for the lower cinch strap. Something like Jeremiah Watt makes, only plain, no engraving. Please help!! Thanks in advance for any direction in finding the illusive....

Hi Guys I am hunting for some nice brass d-rings with screw in pins, just like these http://www.buckleguy.com/2014-3-4-natural-brass-d-ring-solid-brass-ll/ They are actually perfect, but 3/4 is too much, i need them around 1/2" or, even better, 5/8". Any suggestions? I tried OTB, but without success. Thanks in advance, Schpacko

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a supplier for solid brass rivets - double capped, in a variety of sizes (both in brass finish and nickle-over-brass) I'm also looking for the 10mm glove snaps Tandy sells - they got rid of a lot of their bulk packages, and the price for 10 snaps is ridiculous. I've already checked Weaver (who surprisingly only seem to sell copper rivets and rhinestone ones), Brettuns Village, Zack White, Ohio Travel Bag, and a few others - but I'm having a hard time finding what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? I've found the glove snaps on alibaba.com, but my faith in them is pretty low since they are made of iron - which will likely rust. If it helps - I have a business number and am eligible for wholesale pricing. If anyone would be willing to share where they buy their rivets from (I have a rivet press, if that helps) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks Victoria

I've been looking at previous posts on making leather slap jack style saps. I have everything I need except flat spring steel for the handle. What can I use for spring steel that will last? One post said metal packing straps but once they bend they stay bent. Anyone have any ideas for a more resilient material?

I have been asked to make a custom camera for a customer. They want it to have a carabiner with a locking mechanism like this one but with different measurements. Any idea where I can find a dozen or more of these? I check Ohio Travel Bag, Buckle Guy, Etsy, ect.

Guys, I'm looking for a very specific piece of hardware that may or may not exist. I would call it a 'screw post snap button'. It's a combination of this: and this: So essentially the male piece of the screw post would have the button attached to the end of it. What do you think? Does it exist? Maybe I can make it? Justin

Awhile back (maybe half a year) I bought a few hundred steel rivets with gunmetal plating. They were a very pleasant, dark metallic grey in color, and I became rather fond of them. Unfortunately, I neglected to keep a record of where I initially picked them up and now that I've run out, I cannot find any more of them anywhere I was hoping someone might be able to direct me towards some rivet suppliers (double-capped). Thanks!!

I first started dabbling in leather work two years ago when I decided to make some masks for Carnaval, and then last year I got more serious about it and started making jewelry and body pieces. I've lurked around and read posts here and there over the last year, so I thought it was high time to start posting some of my own pieces. And thank you all for the little nuggets of wisdom I gleaned. I'm starting to get a lot better, and I'm pretty proud of this piece. The attached pouch is the first ever one I've done, and it taught me a lot of lessons. I didn't have a pattern or tutorial, and it was an interesting experience. I now know that leather binding needs to be pretty wide, with a wider seam allowance than in standard fabric, and the more seams the better for flexibility. I'll probably end up redoing it.

I want to make some nato watch straps, similar to the attached image, but I cant find ANYWHERE that sells the hardware. If anyone knows where I could get that kind of buckle/loops (especially if its solid brass) I'd be super pumped! Thanks!
