  1. Hi there, I have the green Sailrite leather Machine Can anyone help on why my sewing machine may be doing this? If the leather is dampened or completely dry i get these “bubbles” or “blow outs” I’m using V92 thread and a size 20 needle. It does this regardless if I use one or two layers of 2-3oz leather or 4-6oz leather.
  2. Hi guys, I need some information from one of you serious experts who have been using Hermann Oak leather and Fiebings Dye for longer than I have. Recently over the course of the last couple of weeks I have gotten four hides of H.O. leather, in various thicknesses. I’m using a fiebings Turquoise alcohol die, and it seems to work on every leather except the Herman Oak. It does not come out even slightly bluish, it comes out brownish green. Nothing even close to the color it should. Or the color it has come out in many hides past. The leather on the left is Herman Oak, the leather on the right is some Weaver Select. Someone please tell me why, before I go broke buying Leather I can’t use.
  3. Hermann Oak British Brown belt straps, need to sell, Very nice sheen, Not the color I use, - 1.5 inch width black edge belt straps, 10-12 oz., 3.90/ft. 1.25 inch width black edge belt sraps, 10-12 oz., 3.50/ft. Straps up to 9 feet, shipping via priority mail actual cost.
  4. 3/4 oz HO with Fiebing's Oil Dye. Lined with brown duck canvas. Not exactly sure why the pics are upside down... Let me know what you think and thanks for looking!
  5. Made a mask. Wet formed it over a skull and my own face. Totally wearing this at work right now.
  6. Hello All, Here is saddle project #4 - This is a slick fork saddle I built for a friend on a Swanke tree. Finished out at 15.5" seat. 4.5" handhole w/90 degree bars. As per usual by this stage of project all I see is problems & mistakes. I'd be very glad of input from other saddle makers as my goal is to improve my work continually/ My tooling is still very amateurish. Trying to develop my own style but it seems to require a lot of practice! Looking forward to hearing critiques and input! Regards, Ron L
  7. In today's mail ... HO A-grade $7.81 up to 8 oz, $7,95 above 8 oz Backs add 1.45 / ft Making HO A backs $9.26 / ft HO_2017.pdf
  8. OK guys, now that it has been gifted by my client to their recipient for Christmas: Here is a recently completed project that I have been itching to share! It is Hermann Oak English Bridle, and the colour is Havana. The red stitching is called 'Slam Thread' by Lekoza. It is stitched all the way down once, backstitched all the way back to the top, and then backstitched down 2 holes again to finish. Edges are bevelled, dyed dark brown, and burnished with bees wax. I hope you like it!
  9. So, I had these extra bits of very thin Hermann Oak leather that I didn't want to just toss in the bin. I have always wanted to try my hand at a nice bifold pocket wallet with turned edges, and ribbon pockets... so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a go. Here's the result...not the silk purse I had quite pictured in my mind's eye, but useable. A lot of little errors that sum up to a not perfect item, but I learned a lot. I think I might not ever make another one either... this was a pain in the rear! At least not unless someone offered me the right amount of $$, and I don't see that happening, since this didn't turn out so awesome.... Technical details: my own blend of fiebeng's dyes... 35/3 Coats Barbour linen thread, hand stitched at 10 spi, Hermann Oak Leather 1 to 2 oz, batik hand dyed cloth liner. difficulties with uploads.. apparently 187kb exceeds the size limits.... YinTx
  10. Just found listings on ebay by springfield leather. Listings (more than one) say " Ordering "B" Grade means that Hermann Oak will send Springfield Leather Company the Best Grade Tannery Run Leather at that Time. What ya think? Honest mistake? Are they merely confusing "B" with "tannery run"? Suppose it would do any good to point it out? The listings are a bit confusing to me, but they end up being about $15 per foot (some 15 with free shiping, some $13 with $2+ shipping, etc). Man .. After i went to the trouble of defending them for charging shipping again ..
  11. Anybody can use A-grade single shoulders? At the moment, I need the SPACE more than I need the leather! I'll post a sketch here of what is available, and if there's any interest I'll get pics of the ACTUAL piece(s) you'll get later today. Single shoulders, cut from Grade A cowhide backs (no bellies). I certainly have some, lemme know what type of square footage you need and I may be able to cut one larger for you (sorry, not interested in cutting them smaller). Oh, to clarify - these are about 7 sq ft (32" x 32" -- ish, not including the neck, which I'll GIVE you). A- grade @ $10 / ft
  12. JLSleather

    Hermann Oak

FYI FYI FYI FYI Just off the phone with HO. Hermann Oak "A" grade SIDES currently running $7.66 per foot, making whole sides about $190 U.S. Hermann Oak "A" grade BACKS (no belly leather) currently running $9.11 per foot, or about $175 U.S. I say "about" prices because depends on actual footage of the piece... sides about 25 ft and backs about 19 ft.

  14. Hello All, This project is pretty much wrapped up now - Assembled this last night. I'd like to say thanks to all who helped me out on this project and to all who pointed out things I should do different next time - This forum/website has been the most valuable education tool to me so far... Now, I would like honest criticism from all of you saddle makers out there - I want to know what to do different /better next time. I am open to all critiques on fit, shape, function etc... A few things I have noticed: 1. Rear jockeys - Not tight enough - Didn't cut them deep enough so very hard to get them really tight. Next time will add 1/2" extra. 2. Rigging plates - Too round on front edge and too far up fork - not quite as clean as ideal @ front end. 3. Cheyenne roll - Stitching on back looks like hell. Need to really practice on that, 4. Rear rigging plate set too high. Caused issues with seat ear and saddle strings 5. 13" Wide cantle - Probably do a 12.5" or maybe even 12" next time. 5. Plug rigging plates next time to eliminate bump @ rigging plate. 6. Consider using 2.5" stirrup leathers. Here are the pics I snapped yesterday evening - Oil is still evening out. Once again, thanks to all who helped me on this! Kind Regards, Ron L
  15. Here is the Bible cover that my son and I made for his new Bible. He is graduating high school and about to head off to college and join our other son at Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, OK. They are both studying ministry. Proud of my boys for following in their dad's footsteps!
  16. This is a quickdraw style, John Wayne-esque holster. Antiqued, Hermann Oak leather, 2 layers of 6/7 weight to be exact. I like the way it turned out, although I did have to adjust my Cobra 3 a couple of times during stitching. I learn more every time I use it. Had to turn up the tension on the foot and feed dog to sew through that super thick leather at the top of the seam side where I had built up the leather with 2 welts (plugs). Got it done though!
  17. I am looking to buy some english bridle. I've worked with Hermann Oak and I know its amazing. But its not easy to get ahold of. I just got a set of samples from Wicket and Craig and its AWFUL! this surprises me because i've heard such great things. it was dry, and cracked at the slightest bend. Are their samples representative of the actual product? How does WC english bridle compare to Hermann Oak?
  18. Greetings to the everyone! This is my first post, my apologies if this is posted on the wrong section. I would like to make some iPad bags and Macbook Air bags in veg tan with natural finish similar to the bag in the picture below. I'm planning to order 4/5 oz & 5/6 oz Hermann Oak Grade B sides from Springfield and 9/10 oz Single Belt Bend. Do I have enough usable leather to make 2 bags in 1 HO Grade B side or am I better off buying a Grade A side? Thanks in advance !
