  1. My First leather projects that didn't included a baseball glove! Been re-lacing and breaking in gloves for years, decided to try my hand at tooling and absolutely love it! The Journal was the first tooling project and holster was the first sewing project! I also made a baseball glove "pounding pad" with molded foam blocks inside, just couldn't stay away from the gloves. Bonus Cattle Brand popping through the dye on latest learning project.
  2. Hello I am in need of a pattern for a Colt 1911, leather weight 7/8 oz, inside waist band style, barrel length is 4.25 I don't have the gun. The holster is a b-day gift for my uncle his b-day is in 2 weeks. Thank you
  3. I have just finished what I think have been my best holsters. I would love to hear what you think good and bad. I have been doing this for about 4 months so I know I have areas to improve on... Thanks!
  4. I recently bought a blue gun so I could practice some designs for holsters. Everybody has a 1911 right? I used Ritza nylon thread and hand saddle stitched it.
  5. This is a holster I made for my uncle for his Kel Tec PF9 Holster. I am not an avid marksman/sportsman so I am a little worried about how well it will draw out and sit on his belt, but I will definitely get feed back on it for sure and make it better if need be. The copper rivets were a good challenge for me to think through because I didn't want to other end to be rubbing against the pistol, so I used two 3/4 oz pieces and put them together. I really had to think through the process repeatedly to make sure I was doing it right. I'm pretty happy with it but worried that it will not draw out as well as I hope. I know this is Show Off but I'm always looking to improve so if you see something let me know please! What I've seen/considered: 1. Stitching on the inside may get worn/frayed/fall apart over time and I'm not sure how to get around that 2. Stitching too close to edge 3. Maybe the piece around the trigger guard is too wide? I have a huge hand and it was kind of hard for me to draw it out nicely, but this is for a 2 inch belt which I wasn't wearing so there was some slop Anyways, here it is
  6. Howdy folks! Just finished my second holster for a client. I still have to make the gun belt and fully tool it.... but I don't want to think about that right now. Tooling pattern is my own and the shape of the holster was copied off the original holster. There's still plenty of room for improvement but you know... I'll get there eventually. Let me know what you think! Comments/critique always welcome. Cool gun belt coming soon.... -Ryan
  7. Wow I found an add on craigslist for a campbell harness stitcher. The add had been running for 6 months and started at 4000, 3000, 2000, best offer. I called and scheduled a visit. The stitcher has been sitting for around 20 years. Was purchased for a business that never got off the ground so machine was put in storage. When i saw this stitcher it looked a little rough. I offered 1200 and to my surprise he quickly said yes. I got the Campbell home and called Campbell Randall and discovered it was a Randall. I oiled it, cleaned all the dust off (lots of dust over 20 years) oiled, cleaned, ordered parts, timed, adjusted and turned her over. She was stiff so I oiled her again and again untill she was smooth. I got some thread and threaded her up, wound a bobbin and put in a double piece of 15 oz and sewed it by hand (she did not come with a table) but she stitches like a dream. Nice tight stitches through 1/2 inch of leather, 1/4 in leather. Got to get a table, motor and speed reducer to try her out for good. 20 years of sitting now she's mine.
  8. So I've almost finished one up and let me tell you, it was a bear...I went back and did some searching on welts and what not as by the time I got er together that thing barely fit under the cb3200! Now I am usually pretty good at following instructions, 20+ years of military starting out in the missile maintenance career field, so a Technical Order (T.O.) and numerous Haynes & Chilton manuals....I believe there was a recent topic titled "am I the only one"...lol, so on this one i had a break in construction after pattern making and before cutting and sure as sh#t I come back slap that pattern down and cut 'er out for a righty again instead of a lefty so instead of recutting, I decided if i lined it I could still be ok, the first piece was 8/9 oz so a 4/5 oz liner and bammo left handed holster problem solved...right? Not exactly, when I made the pattern I didn't account for an extra 4/5oz, so then I thought, no biggie, I can just add a little welt for the trigger loop area and that should do er up good, well, it worked out, even though I didn't plan on using welts as I didn't want it to be that thick. now to my next brainfart, also referenced another post about this, sewing uphill/downhill, I had already set my stitch length longer from when I sewed the liner on, tested with some scraps to get the width of two layers of 8/9 & 4/5 oz and set to stitching, but...yep, forgot about that hill for the welt!!!! dammit...to top it all off, I got a little shaky while edging the side with a dauber and got a little on the top...this left a light area and spot on the front so i figured, shoot, i'll just follow the contour of the stitch line and darken the whole thing up, didn't work out, ended up making it butt ugly, I'm hoping after work today I can use a little darker and airbrush a little sunburst around the edge if not, i guess I'll have a nice looking and perfect fitting left handed holster for a 357, a black one...lol. Good news is, i learned alot, and will be adding about 3/16-1/4" to my patterns near the trigger guard and try it without welts. references...and pic from my attempt below... @JLSleather @bushpilotmexico Mine ended up like this with the welts, after I skived the 2d one down alot.... Before and after pics of the dye fiasco... Where I shoulda stopped and thought about things...before messing it up...actually looking at it, I had already boogered the stitch line area from trying to get the cb3200 pucker marks and track marks to lay down a little, used a modeling tool and wooden handle to try and blend...lol added pic of pattern...
  9. My first lined holster, this one in pigskin, because I had some, and tried out the cut lines with seeder at the corners. I learned a LOT on this one. The next one will be much improved. 6/7oz leather, thin pigskin, 25% mahogany 25% burgundy and 50% alcohol. (Fiebings).Finished with a few sprayed coats of Resolene 50%. Oh, and Fiebings edge paint in dark brown. 3 coats with sanding between coats. No welt, made the dimensions so I wouldn't have to. I found that I prefer the strap with snap. This is my second with the hammer strap, not my favorite.
  10. So been chugging along, finished a holster or two and a couple of dopp kits, and a replacement belt for the oldest's favorite buckle.....next is a western style holster/belt...hoping i'm ready for this one...kinda fudged up on the holster for my little bro...forgot he's a lefty...
  11. Hi, guys! So my dad got my brother a .22 revolver for a birthday present and my gift to him was that I would make him a holster to go with it. ...several months later... And here it is! Let me know what you guys think. Comments/critique are always welcome. I read Jim's tutorial in the holster/knife sheath part of the forum and it really helped. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  12. Hey All!, Just finished a holster made with a Nocona boot from a pair. These boots are tall and yielded plenty of boot top for this holster. It's built for a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. I have one more boot in this pair so I'll be able to produce another holster identical to this one. This holster goes out to a long time friend of mine.
  13. Just completed another holster. This one for a Glock 19. I use 7/8oz leather. If I could find the slide/frame junction, I'd press a line in there, but I can't find it through that thickness leather. Tips, anyone? The holster looks kinda plain without some additional boning. Jeff
  14. Finished my first holster. 1860 Colt 44 Slim Jim. NIce simple design to start with. Thanks to members "Northmount" and "Frank" for significant help with the pattern.
  15. This is my first real leather project out side of repairing some horse tack or something on a saddle. I'm going to use some kind of top coat and then put on a mahogany antique stain and buff it off. I'm still looking to see what I need to do to accomplish this. From what I have learned a top coat finish needs to be applied to the inside as well. I'm planning on using a leather lace up the side of the holster. I'm still looking to see what I will need for that as well. I'm also thinking that I might need to use rivet at the top and maybe bottom of the side. I have a few item's on my border that I wish I could do over but to late now. Any advice would be great on some ideals to finish this project would be great.
  16. I wanted to create an atypical looking holster as far as pattern design that was inteded to be carried at the 4/5 o'clock position. I used 8oz Hermann-oak, and 1.2mm tiger thread for the stitching. The dye work was done with an air brush, and fiebiengs' mohogany & black. All comments, critiques and criticism welcome! Happy Leather-crafting!
  17. Ok, I am lost and beyond my experience! The only tooling I have done is on a leather valet I have made. My delima would be my father in law has a veg tan holster for his glock. It is mass production, measures at about 9oz. Oiled finish. It is very plain with no tooling and he would love scroll work put on it. How would I go about this without ruining the original finish to much, or destroying the holster completely. I did inform him it was possible due to very little experience!
  18. Latest holster. I'm also finishing up a pancake style for a Glock 26, but I have to hand stitch it, as I can't figure out how to get the machine stitch line close enough to the wet-molded top piece. It's a flat-backed holster, so the top piece is quite raised from the flaps. I have both right and left presser feet, but can't make the turns without the feet hitting the raised part. I could start and stop stitch lines, changing feet between lines, but that would take way too much time, and it would look stupid, also. I thought about getting the in-line feet, but the rear inline foot would be too far behind the needle for some areas, and if I just used the front foot, I couldn't see the stitch line. Still, there's not a lot of stitching on a pancake holster, so not a big deal!
  19. Hi forum! It's been a long while, but I figured I would post a couple pics of a holster I made recently for an XD. It was fun making it, not happy with the way the tooling came out, but the customer liked it-- I guess that's what really matters. This is the 2nd holster I made, so any feedback on the tooling or if you have a comment about it, please let me know! Thanks for viewing, -JW
  20. Went from seeing a picture through 3patterns 1 prototype to this. Made from 8/9oz leather sewn with 207 white thread which I thick makes it pop.
  21. Hi, everyone!! I hadn't been around in a while... you know how it is, busy with the day job... boy, does that take up a lot of time!!! Anyway, I just wanted to share a new project I started working on for my barber: a holster for his trade tools. He wants something the likes of a shoulder holster, resting between the ribs and the arm, with straps crossing on the back... I don't know what these are actually called but I'm sure you get the idea. He proposed the idea, and it started to tumble around in my head. I'm very sure it has been done before, but I didn't want to get influenced by looking for holsters made specifically for a barber's scissors and straight razor. I remember having read around here about wet forming and I started off by making a sort of cast out of a couple of slicing boards. First, I traced said scissors and razor, pasted them on one of the boards and cut around with a hand saw: I then proceeded with sanding off the edges of both the negative and positive halves of the cast to give room for the leather. I wet the leather (around 6 oz, natural color, veg tan), inserted it into the cast and kept everything in place with a few hand press and vises After it was all dry and properly formed (roughly a week after because of very bad weather when I started) I dyed both sides of it: brown on the rough side and black on the side that will be shown, just to have the borders shine a bit diferent than the rest of the piece... it doesn't show in the picture, tho. I already punched the holes for the stitch. Anyway, it's all I have done for now. I'll keep sharing the progress as the idea keeps taking shape. There are decissions still to be made about what fasteners to use, the thread color, what kind of rivets I will use, etc... so, I'm open to ideas!! Have a nice day everyone!! it's nice to be back after a loooong while!!
  22. I figure I have been lurking for long enough and I should post a couple pictures of holsters I finished for a customer and his son last week. I am still working on getting my coloring consistent but I like how these turned out. Just want to say that you guys are seriously talented and have set a very high standard to achieve. Any critique of the holsters is appreciated.
  23. Not to brag, because it is about 40% sheer luck, but when a customer asked for a closed end on a 1911, I was a little daunted. I'm glad to say it only took two sketch holsters to get this just right.
  24. Hello all, I hope each of you are doing well. Just wanted to share a holster I finished up this week. Comments and Critique are always welcome. Enjoy! Scott
