Hi everyone, New here and looking to learn more about leathercraft. So far having a great time tinkering around with some cheap veg tan, a swivel knife, some cheap stamps, dyes, and whatever ideas pop into my head! Here is my first finished full project. I made a personalized, fixed length guitar strap for a close friend. Hand tooled and hand stitched, well hand everything lol. I was proud of the end result and he intends to use it on stage at the next gig! Hope you like it too.

Hello all! Happy to have found this place! I have been watching a lot of videos and have ordered the basic tools that I need but am still not sure how to get good results cutting out a narrow strip for an inlay in a bracelet. Bit of backstory I should add, I have been making horse hair jewelry, mostly bracelets for almost 10 years and am expanding my business. I am already making wrap bracelets with horse hair, leather and beads. I have seen some beautiful inlay bracelets done with horse hair. I’m using a lightweight 3/4” leather straps, a sharp blade and I am using a groover to mark the lines before I cut my lines for my inlay. Maybe just more practice? Am I missing something? And advice would be helpful! I’m tired of wasting leather it’s too expensive to keep practicing on. Should add I live in Canada and order from Tandy, can order other supplies if I need to! -
I haven't posted something I've made for a while. This was a custom order I completed just recently. The customer wanted a roper style wallet with hair on hide inlays similar to a notebook I had made several years ago. She also wanted the basket stamping like that notebook had and her boyfriend's initials centered on the front. It was a bit of a rush order to get it to her on time for his birthday but it made it in time and apparently he loved it. The stitching got a little wonky on the interior in places when I sewed it. Still mastering my sewing machine unfortunately. Not sure why the last picture is sideways. -
I'm working on an idea for a wallet. I'm thinking about using a nice piece of soft green garment leather for the outside, with a cutout "window" showing a white background (a nice piece of white garment leather). Both the green and the white background will be stitched to a thicker piece of tooling leather. I'm thinking about the best way to stitch it, after gluing it down, considering the following diagram: (A) represents the normal saddle stitch, close to the edge. The edge of the green is not underneath the thread. (B) represents the other possibility, where the stitch passes over the edge of the green, locking it down and precluding the possibility of the edge being pulled up as the wallet goes in and out of the pocket over years of use. Is this something anybody here has experience with? There are two other possibilities: 1) Forget the inlay idea, and just tool the design into the leather. 2) Keep the inlay idea, but cut it into the tooling leather instead, dye it green, and then stitch the white background behind the tooling leather. What do you folks think?

I was just curious if anyone had ideas on how to dress up a stone inlay on a knife sheath? What have you done to make it stand out? Photos or links to stories would be amazing. Just looking for something other the. The plain old cut out and wet forming around the stone. Maybe braiding or something else. Thank for any ideas or suggestions.

Hello I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I am looking to set loomed beads into a belt. All the pictures I have seen of these beautiful belts look like the beads are set into the leather. Does anyone know how this is done? I the leather split then the inlay cut out? Is it a channel of leather removed? Looks like the sides are all stitched. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Kind Regards Meagan

Hi - Newbie Here I am inlaying braids between two layers of leather. I need to hand stitch the layers together (don't have a machine) and so I've been using diamond chisel punches to mark the holes for stitching. I've tried gluing the layers together before punching the holes but unfortunately this is breaking some of the braid so I think I need to punch the holes in both the leather layers together before putting all the layers together. Any recommendations on how to keep the leather layers straight while punching so the leather and holes will line up when I begin stitching? Also, when I'm punching the holes I notice the front is nice and straight but the back is not. Is there a good way to make sure the stitching lines on the back stay straight? I'm using 3 - 4 oz leather. Any help would be great!

Here's a new holster with a lizard inlay (from the Springfield Leather scrap bag). It's Fiebing's mahogany oil dye, Ritza 1.0mm cream thread. I was especially trying to keep clean edges and stitching on this one. Always something to improve! All the best, Tanner @claridge_leather (Instagram) -
This started out as a natural guitar strap with a verse from a song hand written in ink with the treble clef carved into it. I screwed up and somehow got some red dye on the front so I had to redo the strap. I ordered some python print from SLC and decided to cut out the area where the words were originally and use the python as an inlay. Body of the strap is 7oz (skived down from 9oz) with a 2oz pigskin liner. I had a hard time getting all the resolene off so I used vinegaroon to make it black. It did an okay job but still hit it with some black dye to give it a brighter black. All hand sewn with saddle stitch using 0.030" black thread from Maine Thread Co.

Here is my first revolver holster- a gift for my Dad. He likes to inlay a Montana coin in his woodworking projects, so I thought I'd do the same for his holster. Thanks to everyone here for all the tips I have gleaned over the past months as I've taken up leatherwork. My learning curve has been shortened considerably thanks to all the expertise offered here. Been searching for years and I finally found inlay Iphone cases at Tandy. What I have seen previously is taking a generic Ebay phone case and cutting leather to glue on top. the result of this however is a short-lasting case. Does anyone know of a supplier of the actual case for Iphones besides Tandy? My first belt. After having the ends rip off, sagging, stretching and general repeated failures of my "Genuine Leather" belts I decided to make my own. Two layers of 7oz Herman Oak. Weld bond red can contact cement and 1mm black tiger thread. Beaver tails were inlayed and the belt was made grain side out on both sides. Dyed with Fiebings black pro oil dye and top coated with future floor finish cut 50% and sprayed on thru my airbrush. Required 7 thread changes or seven sections of thread to complete the belt. This was my first time doing something that I had to start new thread before it was complete. I just left the needles hang at the end of the run and started a new set of needles and thread. I delt with all of the thread clipping when I was completely done with the belt. I simply started the new thread two holes back (backstsitch) and locked everything this together that way. The belt holds my biggest handgun with ease. It creaks a lot but that will lessen as it breaks in. I'm quite surprised at how much nicer my handguns stay in position. I really learned a lot doing this belt. When you are a healthy eater you get lots of practice saddle stitching. Inlays make the belt custom fit to you. Three inlays means it has to fit or nothing is symmetrical. I know why fat Cowboys have their names centered over a hip instead of under the center belt loop now. -
Hello, I just finished stamping out all my pieces for this project and then proceeded to test paint some samples to see how to most effectively create the look I need to create. I tried the following methods with angelus leather paint in white and black. The look I'm trying to get is a black border with white stamped nordic runes. Methods used: (Black painted leather stamped) fine paint brush with white on brush. (too messy, not clean enough) Repeated the above one, then used a stiff black sponge brush with black paint and got the Orange text result in picture... I did this by accident and now that I look at it look the best... (Black painted leather stamped) watered down white paint and slowly added mix into groves in leather. (crappy turn out as shown in picture.) (Black painted leather stamped) painted grooves white and use clothe to remove. (caused rough feeling white residue on black and made it look like crap and couldn't get off the bad white paint and the letter wasn't fully filled either. I tried this again and the white just dries way too quick for this method to work correctly.) (White painted leather stamped) Used Block dyeing technique with black paint. (Got black paint in letters and the black didn't cover everything i wanted covered. :-/) The picture of my test sample is attached. The orange letters shown seems to look the best now... Is this the correct method? is there a easier way to get the rune letters white? I have a lot to do with this project with little time still, any advice would be appreciated.

I realized while painting pictures that when you use acrylics and they dry on your palette. This is an plastic type of palette ,not wooden one you get a mix of all the colours and you can pull the skin off when it is dry. These are the skins and they are great inlays or even parts for leather or even clothing. They are actually quite strong. This last one is an Elk hide no, not made of paint skins.

One of my first multi-integrated pieces, mixing laser etching & filigree work with brass and gemstone inlays. The blue goldstone on the flap and paua shells on the back turned out perfect for the "cosmic" theme of this piece! fully lined in red pigsuede for a lush interior. -

I have an order for a holster with a snake skin inlay. Simple right, just buy some replica snake skin and make an inlay holster. Not so fast, during the meeting about the holster, I was giving a jar that contained a snake skin in formaldehyde. The customer wants the actual skin from the snake he killed with the gun in the holster. Hmm, that changes things. Has anyone taken on a task like this before? My main concern is cleaning and drying it in a way to not ruin it or have the scales fall out. -
I'm looking for a leatherworker to make me some bracelet blanks to use in conjunction with my paintings. I've recently refined a process of creating painted strips of flexible paper and sealing them so that they're watertight. I'd like to turn my paintings into cuff bracelets and was thinking the best way to go about it would be to inlay them onto a leather base. I need someone to make the bases fit me since I don't know the first thing about leatherworking. More details: Cuff width doesn't particularly matter, I can cut strips to fit. Closure style is up to you. Looking for a couple good prototypes with potential for future orders I can privide painting samples for prototype design, but would prefer to receive blanks and be able to install the paintings myself. Hi all, I've started a headstall/breastcollar set and plan on doing a partial overlay (to the border). I used my divider and measured the breastcollar pattern and subtracted the borders dimensions which gave me the size of overlay I needed. It didn't work as well as I'd hoped and I was just wondering if anyone had a different/better way to cut their overlay to the size they needed. Thanks! Jamie -
Howdy, So, made a few gun holsters, mostly wet formed stuff with simple stitching and some with tooling, but I am looking to do something a bit different now... I'd like to make a nice concealed carry holster for my 1911 and I want to include rattlesnake inlay... My question is, before I ruin everything, can I still wet form the holster once the snakeskin inlay has been done? Not a precise fit form, but more of a general forming just to allow the holster to hung the gun a bit and of course to form a extra clip holder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, VM.
