this is a tooled Butterfly wallet i just got finished. -
Some 20 years ago I stopped doing leather work when I started a business related to my engineering training. I'm retired from that now so I'm blowing the dust off my tools I kept in storage all those years. I never had a stitching/lacing pony so decided to make my own. I didn't want a horse because of storage space. There is only so much room in the garage (not allowed to work in the house). I had the intention of just copying a basic design but my engineering mind could not help itself. Staring with a computer aided design (CAD) I did of a typical pony, then testing and modifying as I built, it appears I finished up with a portable pony thsat has the stability of horse. My "pony" has an extension to move the jaws out from my body to accomodate my "thick" build. When I did this, it was not as stable as I liked so I used a piece of built-in vacuum cleaner pipe I had, made a recessed socket in the bottom of the extension to hold the pipe. The stability pipe can be cut to suit any chair height and is removable for storage and transport. Now I have a very stable, comfortable and portable pony-horse. As built drawing are next.

Mark's awesome video has taught me how to build a pair of chinks but it doesn't cover the type of back belt that is laced on. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Tandy's chap pattern pack has the patterns for that type of back belt but doesn't really tell me how to put it all together. Thank you!

I got a request for a rifle sling to have the edges laced with purple lace... Which I haven't been able to find anywhere! All i can find is square suede lace but that won't work for the double loop lacing. Does anyone know where I can find this!?

First real project. Lots of amateur mistakes, and very simple build. I'd do it again, but more skillfully; clean up all the rough spots and add more stitching, but it was a good learning process. I kinda "MacGyvered" it, (harvested the hardware from horse halters, used an old bracelet for the decoration, didn't really research the strap system, and such) so its a bit scrappy, but I think I'm still proud of it for my first project that isn't a little bracelet or just designs on paper. I just wish I had carving tools and dye. Any tips on when I make more? I have 2 more in the works. One is still on paper, and the other I have the pattern cut out, but I haven't started sewing or anything like that.

I'm almost at the end of the planning stages for kind of backpack/messenger bag with shoulder straps. The straps will be layered around a CC foam strip. Though I haven't decided on the final layer variations, I'll probably end up with 2-4 layers and a final thickness of around 1/8" - 1/4" thickness along the edge. Among the finishing methods, which do you suggest? I've debated on thong lacing, basic saddle soap burnishing, burning and probably some other bad ideas but can't really decide what direction to take. Sturdiness is my primary concern with comfort a close second and appearance in third. If it makes a difference, I'm planning on doing all of the stitching on the rest of the bag with (probably) saddle-stitched artificial sinew. If you have a different suggestion on the type of stitch though, I'm all ears. You can see the bag I'm using as a base design at http://leatherworker...891#entry317335

Hi here is a belt I just made for a friend /customer,he is very happy with it, Made from 3mm veg tan leather ,with feibings acrylic dye and finished with 3 coats of 50/50 Resoline. Also with matching keyfob made the same with lacing border. -
I have been lurking here for a few days. Reading all the great advice and soaking it all in while also working on my first project. I am still building my tool collection and have a question about lacing. What type of hole punch should I buy? I have thonging chisels but it looks like round holes would be better. Most of the punches that Tandy have are not geard toward the thicker leather. So what do the pros use? Thanks for all the help you have already been!

Yeah, brand new just like a lot of other people. Been offhandedly looking at leatherworking for 6+ months and have been devouring LW.net and any other online information I can get ahold of for the last two. Just dissected The Leatherworking Handbook over the last four days. I think it's safe to say i've already been bitten by the bug. The only thing that is bothering me though is that after going through all of that I can't seem to muster any interest at all in lacing. I finally convinced myself tooling could be cool and with some practice I don't think I'd be terrible at it, but as for buckstitching and such I just don't like the look of it. Is this terribly odd? I almost feel bad for not liking it at all. Emilie
