  1. Hello! I've been researching all the leather cutting options for a while now. So I am new at leathercrafting but I would like to find a way to make perfect cuts so I could make good products. I have very little space - 1.5x1.5 sq.m. and I need a little machine for that purpose. The options I researched are as follows: Laser To use a laser for cutting skin, it is necessary that the laser has a power of at least 10 watts. Mandatory should be added air assist to get less skin burns, encloser, as well as perfect ventilation. My space is easy open air area and I would not have problem with ventilating. Lasers that would work for me are the following: Wainlux K8 - That would be the best option due to size and portability. The big downside is the working area /130x130 mm maximum/; Longer Ray5 10 W - may the best option for me. Ortur LM3 Laser Ortur LM3 LE Laser Engraving & Cutting Machine Atomstack X12 Pro Atomstack P9 M50 xTool M1 10W - best quality. May be the first laser and also with blade for cutting. CNC with drag knife - looks good but very big and loudly. Not compatible for me. Cricut Maker 3 & Cameo 5 - both look amazing. They can cut leather but I don`t know. i would like to know your opinion about that those two. Sizzix - I find on amazon "superdant" store. There cutting dies for leather which work with sizzix - 1/2/3/4 . But that`s it. I don`t know if they can make it custom patterns and I have doubts for the quality. Clicker press - I think that would be the best option for me to buy low cost clicker press. I was looking that ones by vevor: 1/2/3 . I have problem with their weight - around 30-40 kg. I was looking for a smaller by zonesun like that ones: 1/2/3 - but I would by a machine for 120-200 $ and pay 200 $ shipping .... Arbor press - looks good for 50-100 $ I could buy an arbor press 1 or 2 tons. But than I have to order a base and the only good option I found is that one - link . The cost is 120 $ without taxes and shipping so no thanks. I would like to start with wallets and small stuff - no bigger than a medium bag. I try to cut by hand but the finish is not good enough for me. I don`t like it and got frustrated. I'm already seriously confused about which path to choose to start with. I ask for your opinion.
  2. Hello All, Just wanted to share a short video of some leather cutting action on the xTool D1 Pro 20W. This has saved me so much time making small prototype items......Rory Laser Cutting a small pocket sheath for a knife with the xTool D1 20W Pro - YouTube
  3. I've been making these hats and selling them at our local farmers market and folks have loved them! Some of y'all may not appreciate the laser engraving, and that's ok. It gives me the ability to do designs and detail I wouldn't be able to achieve otherwise. Hope y'all like them!
  4. Found this youtube video and though of you guys and girls It shows how you can individually but at the same time mass produce leather goods with the help of a laser engraver. I guess the majority of the work is making a set of templates with fixed positions for images and messages which is not hard on most cad software. the video shows a few being done at the same time , but nothing to stop you doing one as and when required I imagine most would use a cheap machine like this https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=20+watt+laser+engravers&newwindow=1&sxsrf=ALeKk01xP2X3GNZf0vXDzOxC1JEbCgewTg:1600687891350&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiwzKOJk_rrAhUUVBUIHfTJAIYQ_AUoAXoECAsQAw&biw=1366&bih=625#spd=6727740400982699999_0 Anyway here is the link to the video
  5. I am looking at a laser cutter for the workshop and wondered if anyone was using them for pattern cutting. I am interested in the materials used, the make and model of cutter and the quality of the finished piece. Any comments would be welcomed. Thanks Harry
  6. Johanna and I have created this new category under Fabrication for people to discuss computer driven 3D printers, engravers, mills and laser cutters. You can also share information about software, drawing tablets, file formats, apps and shared CAD file resources. I have moved some existing topics into this forum to get it going. If you are not yet a member of Leatherworker.net and want to join the discussions, please sign up to become a member! It's free to join. If you do, please fill in the details field for your location. At this time, this is not a place for selling equipment. Please post any equipment for sale somewhere under the Marketplace section of LWN. Thank you in advance. Enjoy!
  7. I have just had delivery of my new laser etcher / cutter, initial set up was straight forward, and an initial run at very low power has given me great hope of it fulfilling my expectations totally. Once I have got used to it, I will post an update and critique of the machine. It has been a pleasure dealing with Grant at Nova Robotics, he has an eBay store and is a genuine enthusiast. That's all now, need to go and eat...
  8. Have been hoping to make something I would make again, and I think I've found it. This bag is inspired by the Native Americans living in the Klamath-Trinity watershed of northern California, the Hupas, Yuroks, and Karuks.
  9. Here's my latest laser engraved offering - a vanity tray made for my daughter. Laser engraving done on an LS3020 desktop laser: http://hpclaser.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=92 It's a hobby machine and not cheap - but my husband bought it for doing some wood work, so why wouldn't I take advantage of it :-) Dyed first with vinegaroon, then finished with Fiebings black oil dye mixed with irridescent medium (to give it some shine) Dragon painstakingly painted with Angelus leather paint (pewter)
  10. Mixed box of cowhide leather remnants for sale in great condition. Some long, some wide, some small. Only selling this as a single listing, not individual pieces. $50+ shipping (likely around $30 domestic). Local pickup o.k.! These are in Los Angeles, CA. Thanks!
  11. I had to try it… so here is my first purse, a laser-cut version of the Hermés Birkin Bag. It’s really more of a prototype, as I’m still learning how the laser cutter works on different leathers, and, more importantly, how to execute good design. The leather used for the outside and inner pockets is top-grain “Red Dakota” cowhide (5-5.5 oz.), and the lining is “Designer Delight Dark Red” (2.75-3.25 oz), both from the Hide House in Napa, and the thread is Waxed Polycord from Maine Thread Company. The cutting, the lacing holes, and the engraving were done on a 100-watt, CO2 laser cutter, with the pattern created in Adobe Illustrator. Hardware is from various sources, and all stitching was done by hand.
  12. Here's my second attempt at an ebook cover using the laser to engrave the leather. The front is 3mm thick leather, the back is 2mm. The pearlescent blue is angelus leather paint, on a Fiebings Royal blue background. The laser cutting is definitely getting better. I'm quite pleased with this one.

  14. Here's a set of firsts: 1st time using the laser to engrave a design 1st time using vinegaroon to dye the leather black. I did end up going over part of it with oil based dye. I've still got some experimenting to do with the laser, the 2nd cut of the same design was better - but I've still to finish that one off.
  15. Unsure if I’m in the minority, part of my leatherwork is laser engraving however I’m consistently seeking value for money (or free) web sources to improve images etc. ideally none that are linked to spam etc would help.
  16. Universal Laser Engraver VLS 6.60 - 60 Watt. I bought this new in December 2010. It has not seen much use and is in great shape and works perfectly. It comes with an exhaust blower, upgraded honeycomb cutting table and CorelDraw X4 graphics Suite program to use the laser engraver. I am asking $17,500 for this whole package. This is all you need to start engraving and cutting leather. I have used it to cut up to 14 oz leather. I am in Temple, TX. Please direct message me if you are interested. 17. Boss Laser LS1416 that has roughly 20-30 hours on it. Bought this Laser Brand New from Boss Laser about 5 months aga. Included is the upgraded 60 Watt bulb (Standard for LS 1416 is 40Watt Bulb. The 60 Watt bulb this machine has, will allow you more power to engrave deeper if you choose and more materials with ease. This bulb upgrade cost me $249) and the stand ($97). Also includes vent pipes, blower, compressor, LaserWorks8 software. This machine is Like new with very little time on it. Everything is included and I am happy to give you one hour of Free Training with the sale of this Laser. I originally bought this for my leather belt shop and it is a GREAT machine, works perfectly. I just have too much volume coming out of my shop to offer engraving any more. Also, need money to open a retail store.H ence, I am parting ways for now. Price is $3,995. No trades please. The 60 Watt power in bulb and stand are extras that with the price. Visit https://www.bosslaser.com/boss-ls-1416.html to see this machine new. (You get $344 worth of extras plus you don't pay shipping from Florida (Boss Laser Warehouse) and Free 1 hour Instruction by me) If you want a powerful and reliable laser that can do anything like wood, leather, glass, plastic, paper, (some metals) then this is your machine. (See sample photos of my leather engravings that this exact machine has done). This is a perfect starter engraving machine that is accurate and in absolutely great condition. Also, Boss Laser is known for their great customer phone support which is still included. It can engrave an area of 14" X 16" and if you have long pieces then there are doors to pass your material through. I make leather belt so I use this option a lot. The machine has also been very well cared for and maintenance performed meticulously. YOU PICKUP or You can coordinate shipping with Carrier. I can help load the laser but will not be able to crate this for you. I recommend going on uship.com and finding someone to transport it to you inside of an enclosed trailer. My Cell phone is 310-982-3290 for serious inquiries only. P.S. I also have a Rare Belt Clicker press for sale on here. See my other posts. It is a beautiful machine that I have not seen anywhere. You just need a new die made or current die modified by a CNC shop. keywords: laser engraver, engraving, wood engraving, leather, leather craft, epilog, laser, custom engraving, boss laser

  19. Hello everyone and thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. I have never worked with leather before. I work as a Graphic Designer for a T-Shirt shop. I recently pre-ordered a laser for cutting and engraving. I want to use it to make custom wallets and bags. I don't expect to receive it for several months, but I want to do a lot of research before I get started. I have many questions, and there are probably questions I should ask, but don't know I need to ask. I have researched a little, but finding specific answers to my questions has been yielding a lot of contradictory answers. I'm hoping the knowledgeable members here can help me get started. I'll list a few questions I have, and feel free to let me know if I'm missing something important. 1. What type of leather should I start with for wallet making? From what I am reading, Vegetable Tanned in the 3oz range seems appropriate. Am I right? Do you have any other suggestions? 2. What type of threading should I use? I intend to cut stitching holes, then use an awl and hand-stitch. 3. Can you recommend any vendors for leather, stitching and tools? 4. I know it will depend on the design, but can anybody give me a general idea on the square footage I can expect for a wallet? I'm thinking maybe around 2. 5. Is there anything I need to know concerning cutting leather with a laser? I intend to stay away from dyed leathers to avoid corrosive fumes damaging my machine. I am seeing that using masking tape over the leather can help prevent smoke damage. I don't know if there may be something else to consider. I really appreciate your time if you can offer any tips.
  20. From the album: Portfolio

One of my first multi-integrated pieces, mixing laser etching & filigree work with brass and gemstone inlays. The blue goldstone on the flap and paua shells on the back turned out perfect for the "cosmic" theme of this piece! fully lined in red pigsuede for a lush interior.
  21. Hello everyone, I made a short video to show how I use my laser to engrave and cut leather. You can view it here http://youtu.be/VLSaYWZG2n0. Regards KN
  22. I finally got the big winter storm which gave me the time to make the Tandy 1911 Cavalry holster and template set. I bought the pattern set early this summer and put it away for a winter storm. We have had a lot of blowing snow yesterday and today, almost a Blizzard in northern Ohio. So my excuse to hold off on finally getting this project done was gone! It turned out to be a fun and fast project. This one's going to my brother in law who has begging me to make one for him. Thanks for looking! Joyce~ Back River Laser
