Does anyone have any good tips- with legitimate reasoning why you use one or the other for the type of leather you use to make 8' split reins with water loops? I have used both- latigo seems to be easier to get heavier sides (thicker reins) and I am always impressed by the durability, but I like the way bridle/ harness finishes and is much more pliable. I have thought about doubling up lighter weight latigo and stitching but together but I also feel this is a somewhat unnecessary step especially when there isn't much of a return for spending a lot of time on reins. If I were to double and stitch say something in the ball park of 7/8 oz. H.O. latigo- should I apply barges in between? Or add anything in the ends for weight? Do you hot dip? What temp do you like to put your oil at? Thanks in advance

Really an amazing collection of Weights, tanning methods colors and textures. Small scraps to whole hides, various species. Good morning...I'm looking for dark brown latigo... like the Havana shade. Can anybody give me a heads up where they purchase their is from and recommend any distributors for a nice leather go in all colors. I currently use Weaver which is great but I wanna expand and look at some other tanneries all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So my wife has stored her horse tack in the shed outside that is getting more moisture than we thought. A lot of her gear has this white mildew that I want to clean off before it gets worse. What would you guys use to fix this and other than move the gear inside the house, are there any products that could help prevent this in the future? The leather was in good shape, conditioned, and relatively new. Thanks in advance. -Mike

I have 9-12oz latigo bellies in black, burgundy, and brown bellies, roughly 50 in each color, as well as scraps, leftover strap in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" ranging from 6" and up etc. Looking to get it out of my shop for a cheap. When I was starting to work with leather, my brother-in-law gave me a box of all his scraps. Most of it was latigo. A few years later, I wanted to build myself an archery quiver, as I shoot archery tournaments at Renaissance faires. I decided to try working with that box of scraps. I came up with a completely unique design, and tried tooling a bit on a couple scraps I wasn't using. After a few failures, I decided, with little actual training from an experienced leather worker, to try carving my designs, then try to tool it from there. I started by carving my designs first, then I laid a wet cloth on the leather until it started absorbing the water, then began tooling. SUCCESS! I created an incredible looking quiver, with a lot of great Celtic knotwork and my personal emblem on it. I brought it to the local leather supply to show a friend that worked there, and has since been promoted to district manager. He looked it over, complimented me on the work, but said it shouldn't have worked using latigo leather. It actually only took me two days to complete the carving and tooling for all the panels, but assembly took about five days, and lots of blood from sticking myself with the needles. I'll post a few pictures in a few hours as I have to unbury it from my mobile workshop.

Just knocked out a few more collars for the web store I am launching soon. I had a mate take some photos for me, as is his hobby. These are his 'messing around on Sunday Arvo' shots... which are instantly better than anything I have done! Lol Anyway. Burgundy latigo, about 3.6mm. Edges are hand burnished. Riveted with brass saddlers rivets. Hardware is all solid cast brass. Enjoy!

I am inundated with strap scraps that need a new home. Prefer to sell by the giant box full, weighing about 40-60 pounds per box. Come and see it all and make an offer for a truckload! Located in Aurora, CO. Herman Oak golden tan bridle, 8/10 oz veg tan, and 9/11 oz. struck through Black Latigo from Chahin. Most are mixed boxes, with both colors. Most leather is cut and edged, from 3/8" to 1" wide. Also plenty of random bits and trimmings from the edges of the sides. Asking $1.50 per pound, or $40 per big box. A few boxes full of ONLY the bridle leather cut to 9/16" width. This is beautiful stuff, it's just a little too short for the products we make with it. Asking $2.00 per pound, or $60 per box. Perfect for key fobs, bracelets, small projects, 4-H, scouts, crafts, etc. Remnant from dog leash/collar business (IE: nothing long enough or strong enough if this is what you want to make, because we've used what we can for this purpose). CHAHIN BLACK LATIGO 9/11 ounce, struck through jet black color (not just died on the surface like most). Heavy weight, superior quality, premium American hides tanned by Chahin. Asking $10 each piece of belly remnant, or 15 for $100. I have dozens available, and a continuous supply. Make me an offer for a truckload! There are hundreds of pounds. Located in Aurora, CO (Denver area). First image shows a random piece stretched out on 12" tile floor for size reference. Usually run about 12-18" wide by and about 5-6 feet long. Bellies are the bottom part of a full side of a leather hide and have some blemishes and soft spots but are excellent for craft projects. You will NOT find this quality leather at the local leather craft supply shop. (Inferior belly leather from Tandy is $30-40 each.) Tandy wants this much money for a pound of mid-grade leather scrap. Wholesale cost paid for this stuff is over $9/square foot. This really is a great price for amazing leather. Remnant from premium dog product business. Good for various crafts requiring heavy weight leather, like bags, holsters, whatever. IE: NOT for pet products, as I've used what I can for this purpose. I am just finishing a belt I made from latigo leather and am wondering if anyone has any experience or advice for finishing/waterproofing it so it doesn't bleed? Will just using meats foot oil be sufficient? I can't seem to find any resources online. Thanks in advance!

Another latigo project, this one for a client. It's a slip lead, for a small dog that will pretty soon become a large one! (german shepherd puppy) The construction is pretty simple, being just a 1" wide burgundy latigo strap with a couple of turn backs and an O-ring. The handle end and the turnback for the cast brass O-ring are skived to half the thickness, and secured with two solid brass rivets. The smooth burnished edges are dyed with mahogany dye, and burnished with water and beeswax... burnishing that much length took about an hour by itself using my pro-edge burnisher. How does it work? You use it instead of a choker chain. The O-ring slides freely up and down the lead, tightening when the dog or handler pull on the lead. When not being pulled on, it returns to a loose position, in the same way as a standard choker chain. There are a couple of advantages for this over a choker chain though. Firstly, it is softer on the dog because the 1" wide strap spreads over a wider area than a choker chain, yet it still achieves the same purpose. Unlike this free floating O ring, choker chains have linkages and can often remain tightened after the dog has been corrected. Also the absence of a chain means no uncomfortable hair pulling for the pooch. I hope you like it! I am sure my client will get as much satisfaction from it as I have done with my own for the past 2 years... The sad thing is, this lead will survive longer the dog.

Just a simple dog collar I knocked out on the weekend for my border collie. He seems pretty happy with it! Latigo leather from Tandy, about 3.8mm thick (9-10 oz). Solid brass hardware, and solid brass rivets. Only the best for my boy!

Just wrapped this one up last night. I really like the look, however, the latigo will not work for a final case (too light/flexible). I look forward to tweaking this a little bit and reconstructing out of english bridle. -
So Windrider's posts on making boxes lit a fire under me, since they coincided with me fiddling around with something at work. When cutting moulding on a miter saw, you end up with triangle shapes. If you get four of them and put them back to back, the rabbet of the moulding ends up pointed out and makes a snazzy lid! This is my first attempt, I happened to have some burgundy latigo scrap and one of the lids that went nice with that color, so I went at it. I'm frankly astounded that it turned out as well as it did, since I completely guessed at the height/angle of the curve for the sides. I cut the edges at an angle (which was a challenge) and saddle stitched them together, then burnished all the edges. The lid pops right in but not so snug that it's a pain to get on and off. Size is 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" by 2" tall.

What are the differences between these three kinds of leather? I make personal objects like wallets and bags, and until discovering Latigo I just went to Tandy to pick out hides that seem to best suit my needs. While researching my last order with Hide House this question began to nag me, and the thought occurred to me that I should order some of the bridle and harness hides they sell just to see what they are like. But that's a lot of money for R&D if I can't use the hide. Another question: is the California latigo they sell at Hide House different from other latigo? I'm grateful for any insight the brain trust here can give me.

Most of my purses are put together via thick latigo like lacing (not flat style braiding lace...as of yet), I often make my own from hand oiled, dyed, and finished veg tan leather, ranging from 4-5 ounce to 7-8 ounce. It does the trick, but I'd like to up the quality of lace and possibly just buy a dyed utility hide and go from there. I have done so before with black and burgundy latigo and it did turn out nice, but I'd like to see what other options there are out there. I don't mind the idea of an oily utility leather for lace either. Any of you more experienced Leather workers have any advice or suggestions on this matter? As well, has anyone ever tried this lacing? From what I've researched that is 40% off what you would pay for them on Amazon or Ebay. The measurements are 72 inches long by 1/2 wide. Color is brown. All are new. I have 76 is stock. Hey everyone. This is my first major leather project. Let me know what you think. I made a total of 8 identical Saddle Bags for the Flathead County Sheriff's Posse in Montana. I Used 9 oz Yellow Latigo leather for the bag and 4 oz yellow latigo for the gusset. Can't wait for the next project.
