    Leather machinery advice

Hi all, I currently make leather bags by hand (up to 10oz thick) and am looking to buy some machinery to ease the strain on my joints - I've done some research but it's hard to find any UK sellers for most of the things suggested on this forum - I wondered if anyone could recommend any hand presses (for punching and rivet setting), hand clickers (for die cutting), and burnishing machines sold in the UK. Budget is pretty limited, hence the request for hand tools rather than hydraulic. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Danielle
  7. Hey everyone! Im fairly new to the leatherworking industry and im just starting to build up my tool collection. Ive begun to get more and more orders so im looking for something to help my efficiency in production. One thing that slows me down is installing button snaps and rivets. Maybe i need more practice doing it by hand but i have trouble setting these in sometimes. This slows me down since i have to remove the messed up snap or rivet and can sometimes cause me to damage or scratch the item im working on. Its also happened a couple of times when the snap or rivet come off altogether after i thought it was securely in place. I want to produce high quality items for my customers and rid the fear of the item possibly coming appart. Can anyone point me in the direction of an affordable snap/rivet press? The one's on tandy are a little to pricey for me at the moment. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. P.s. i dont mind buying second hand tools! Much appreciated, Ruben

  10. Hi Everyone, I am just getting into leatherwork and would greatly appreciate some help/advice on a few topics. I’ve been doing a lot of practice tooling and carving on Herman oak veg tan pieces and would like to try my hand at a lighter, more pliable, and higher end leather hides. However I’ve had a hard time locating a company here in the US which has a vast selection of similar hides and exotic skins. Through watching some of Ian Atkinson’s videos I found that he recomends the hide company that I’ve linked below. Perhaps you know of it as well. If anyone knows of a company that is basically the US alternative to this company I would be very grateful if you could tell me about it. Also I’m looking into upgrading my swivel knife. I’ve landed on a leather wranglers SK-3 knife. If you guys know of a higher quality knife or one that is better than the SK-3 please let me know. Thank you guys. Glad to be a new member here. http://www.aacrack.co.uk/ http://www.shop.leatherwranglers.com/product.sc?productId=4&categoryId=18

  16. Hello all! I'm taking a trip over to the UK soon, and I would love to see some of the local leatherworking shops, and their supplies. I will mostly be near London, so if anyone can point me to a supplier near there, I would be extremely grateful. (and also if anyone knows a shop in Paris worth checking out, I will attempt to see that as well.) Thanks for your help everyone!
  17. Well, I finally grew tired of using my substandard edge creaser. I thought of shelling out for the Vergez Blanchard model, but just couldn't part with the cash so I decided to make my own. Solid brass construction with beech wood insert. Threaded brass rivets hold it together and knurled brass knob for adjusting the width. Works like a charm and feels miles better that my old "Tandy" creaser.
  18. For tooling, how do you determine what weight maul to use? Peter
  19. I know this type of forum question has been done a lot, but I am trying to get an idea as to what I recently picked up. I am new to leather work and self teaching so was looking to find a round knife for that next step. Picked up this one from a Canadian eBay dealer, it shows some age but appears to be in Good shape. There is no markings similar in style to the Osmand, but from reading other forum threads here and viewing the pictures, I am thinking it is a Clydesdale/Shapleigh given the slight side extensions at the handle connections and metal nail used in handle. Would not mind hearing from other Canadians as to where are good Cdn conn cations for vintage leather working tools. Thanks Peter
  20. My best seller is the standard veg tan belt. I'd like to reduce the amount of time it takes me to make them. The Weaver edgers are pretty dang awesome, but have a pretty ridiculous price. Has anyone attempted to make a home made tool to edge multiple sides at once? I've thought about shelling out for the Weaver edger wheels for ~$180.00 and building a frame around them in wood. Any feedback is welcome! for reference: http://www.weaverleathersupply.com/Catalog/ItemContent.aspx?ItemNumber=29255&CatalogId=001&CatalogDetailId=51&NSM=Y
  21. I am in search of a Heritage Bluegrass EZ Edger, either the single side edger or the double side edger. I am interested in a new one, or where to purchase one, or a good used one. I do too much edging and I need something to reduce the time I am spending edging when I could be doing something else. Thanks in advance.

  23. First time poster, here. Does anyone know what makes the indented lines above and below the card slits? Is it a special tool and if so does anyone know what it is? Thanks!
  24. I came across a batch of old rusty leather working tools (various stamps, edgers, etc. - 26 pieces in total). I have two main issues on which I would appreciate some of your ideas: 1. identifying the intended use of particular tools 2. getting them back to performance Looks like a belt end punch with a slot ... but is closed at the back, so it is something else, I guess ... Looks like an edge beveler ... but the grooves are upside down, and there is no groove in the front - it ends with a point Looks like a round stylus of sorts ... but way oversized (the grid is 1cm x 1cm, or about 3/4"), so maybe for stamping ball imprints? And this is a batch of what looks like stamps, punchers or cutters. Leaf and flower designs, oversized again. Were they used for cutting out patterns, or for stamping their shape? Has anybody seen something like this before, and knows for what products/style they were used? There are other tools as well, but I did not include them here because they kind of make sense to me already, and there is a limit on total files upload size. The second issue is more practical ... how to restore them? Rust is heavy. I was thinking of using distilled vinegar, and afterwards oiling and scrubbing them with steel wool. Sharpening would probably be done by using sandpaper on a stick. Any experience?
  25. I am getting started in saddlery and other leather work and have been looking for a leather splitter. I came across a 3-in-1 crank splitter/skiver/cutter on ebay and was wondering whether anyone could shed some light on the quality and capabilities of this machine. I would have to restore it, but I'm just not sure it will do the things I would need it to do. I actually get a kick out of restoring old stuff, especially since I can get things cheaper when they need restoration work. Couldn't read the model numbers on it, so I attached a photo. Wondering whether a machine like this will be a good addition to my shop, or whether I should just look for a smaller pull-through Osborne or similar machine.
