Hello, This question is for those who have worked with Springfield's "Top Grade Tooling Sides" and Wickett & Craigs tooling sides (Or Hermann Oak). I am wondering if there is a visible difference in quality between the two? I will not be carving at all, just cutting shapes and sewing and riveting, so I am looking for a leather that will look great. I have been using Springfield's for a while and have been very happy with it. So - is it worth it to pay a few dollars more for the Wickett just based on the final look? Thanks!

Hello, I am just starting to look into buying leather in bulk, rather than just a couple of sides at a time. I have been buying 3-4 oz sides top grade tooling from springfield for $4.49 sq ft. I need something of similar quality but a bunch of sides at once - probably around 250 sq ft. More or less depending on price. - Where and how do I begin this process? - What are typical minimums? - In general will I save a lot? - Any other advice? Thanks in advance for the help!

As part of buying out a business I inherited a couple of different machines that don't fit my business model. I have here below an Auto Soler used to attach uppers and soles together on boots, shoes, and other items. It is located in the Greater Seattle Area and is ready for immediate pick-up, or delivery (nominal fees) within 2 hours of Seattle. Otherwise you will need to work with me to make arrangements to have it shipped. Unit is just over 5' 10" tall and about 12" square at the base and weight an estimated 200 lbs. (I can move it pretty easily by myself by walking it across the shop floor). I am asking $900 for it, but feel free to make an offer. Not pictured and to be posted soon: * Continental 8 boot nailer * Landis 12 E (yes and E model) All of these machines are in working condition and am finishing up maintenance of the 12E. If interested in any of these machines please drop an email. Images are too large at the moment so working on resizing them. Will post them soon.

Hi, I am looking after a grainy oak natural veg tanned leather to make a leather bag. The leather should be pretty grainy as I like that look and softness. It is pretty much like the leather Mulberry is using, so I attached some near photos of their leather. The flap is going to be out of a cow (hair) leather. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I joined this forum after reading through a bit and realized that this community is exactly the type of people I need to talk to. My company is beginning production of our leather wallet series. I am looking for a soft and supple lambskin, to have exposed on the outside of one of the wallets. Currently, the leather supplier we have chosen is Horween for our standard leather, since we plan on making Shell Cordovan models. But our long women's wallet will need to be covered in a very soft additional layer of leather. Having chosen lambskin, due to its soft texture, we have been looking for the best tannery to supply us with the best possible lambskin that money can buy. We are not concerned with hide pricing, only quality. My question to everyone is this, what would you consider to be the best possible lambskin leather distributor in the world? Responses here are just fine, but feel free to contact us at office.imageco@gmail.com as well

I'm looking for leather that really 'pops', bright colored of the type you'd usually see for suedes. Haven't really been able to find any. Would prefer not to dye myself. In the 2.0-3.0 oz range. Thank you, Colin

Hello All!! I'm looking for a little help on the cement front. I attach suede to the bottoms of shoes to turn them into dance shoes at several large swing dance events here on the Eastern seaboard. I've been doing it for several years now and recently ran into a problem when I bought a gallon of Barge's new cement formula... Specifically the Super Bond "Fast-Dry" with the gold label. I found the bond to not be as good as my previous trusty "old" formula Barge cement (which I can't get anymore)...and I had some unhappy dancers on my hands who's suede was coming off after only a couple days! I'm typically bonding rough or chrome suede to various types of rubber bottoms of existing shoes and usually do a quick cleaning and sanding of the bottom to rough it up before adhering and follow up with a mallet or roller for extra stick. Am I doing something wrong? Do you recommend a better method? And more importantly, is there a better cement on the market for attaching leather to rubber, while allowing it to remain a flexible bond? Time is a bit of the essence in my case as I need to go ahead and get a gallon on order in the next week or so. Thanks so much for your time!

Good morning! I am a beginning leatherworker and purchased a Singer 15 sewing machine a few months ago and it had been doing a fantastic job stitching leather of all thicknesses, single and double ply, up to 15 oz and as thin as 2 oz. Recently I have been having immense difficulty with two things on it. 1. The thread spacing is erratic sometimes even on leather that is exactly the same thickness the whole way, it may stem from the second problem I am having though. I have checked the thread spacing screw and it is tight and has not moved from the position it has always been in (~6-8 stitches per inch). Is this due to having too large of a needle? 2. The presser foot periodically will lift up with my leather when the needle is coming back up through the leather to go to the next stitch and will also miss locking the stitch. I have backed out and adjusted the tension on the presser foot all the way down as far as it can go. Previously this would be so tight that the leather would not even move when you tried to advance a stitch. Now it is so loose that the needle can easily pick up the leather when it is coming back through. I am mainly making headstalls, breastcollars, halters and spur straps, using 13-15oz leather, what type of thread and size needle should I be using? Does anyone have any experience with these machines? I would like to see if I can figure out what is going on with it before I take it in to a shop we have here in town that *might* be able to fix it. I would love to purchase a more professional machine, but money is tight right now and I am already farther than I would rather be in the hole with starting my leather business up. However if anyone has a used machine that works well still that they are looking to sell please let me know! Thank you sooo much for any help that you can give! Christina

Hi all. Right now I'm thinking about making some dog leashes with some of the leather I have around. It's just vegetable tanned, and I was wondering if that type of leather would be appropriate for that sort of thing. Usually when I see people making leads and collars it's with bridle or latigo leather. I've got a leather finish that works pretty well to waterproof the leather, so I don't think the leather getting wet is a huge issue, but are latigo and bridle leathers that much stronger?

Hi Everyone, I wanted to share some bark tan deer hides I have been working on. Tell me what you think! If you're interested in picking them up I have them for sale on my Etsy store (and more pictures too). And I hope it's OK I'm just showing a hide and not a made item. It took me a long time to figure out how to tan hides and now I am on to the task of learning how to make stuff out of them. Get them before I figure it out! Thanks, Dennis

Hello! I am looking for someone to help mentor me either one on one of via pictures and email, I have searched high and low in Central Oregon and have been turned down by the few people I have asked if they would consider giving me a lesson or two to improve my skills. I am completely self taught with the help of Tandy videos, books, and YouTube. I have attached an example of my work here. To me it is starting to look very good, but as I am a perfectionist, I would really really appreciate help and advice from someone who is in the leather industry professionally. My main focus is on horse tack, spur straps, maybe a purse or two. I am not very creative so drawing my own patterns is hard for me but I am starting to get a little better in that regard! Any help would be amazing from drawing patterns, choosing leather for my projects, casing and tooling, managing and selling my work, or anything really! I know I need work on casing and when to start making swivel knife cuts and carving, making my swivel knife cuts flow as well as bevelling evenly, I have been working on "walking" the tool around my design, and appropriate use of other various tools. My designs always look better after I have dyed or finished them than when they do natural with just the tooling. I would love to someday make a custom saddle, even if that is the only one I ever make I realize that this takes time from your day that you could be making money, however, it is such a priviledge to learn from someone who is excellent at what they do, I would love the opportunity and I am very willing to put in the work that it takes to better my skills. Thanks so much! Christina

How do I achieve a light oil finish on my tack? I love the way it looks but have never been able to find a dye light enough to achieve the look I want. Any step by step pointers would be fantastic! I am also trying to find a place to buy thick leather to make 1 ply headstalls, breastcollars, etc. I have some light saddle skirting but it is just too thin and I have to make them two ply. Any suggestions on where to find good leather for this would be great. Of course as I am just starting out making tack, the smaller pieces I can find that still work are usually the cheapest so the better Thanks in advance! CW

Hey . . . the Pendleton Leather show is Oct. 25 & 26. FYI, our Oregon weather has been fantastic the last couple of weeks (ie. no rain and great fall colors) so it's a nice time to visit. Some might say the show is better than Christmas. ;-) www.pendletonleathershow.com I'm only posting this because I've really enjoyed the show over the last couple of years. Nice vendors, and a great selection of leather and tools. Unlike the Sheridan show where some vendors only have things "on display" . . . all of last years Pendleton vendors were ready with stuff to sell at good prices. Just looking at the stacks of leather sides from Oregon Leather is mind blowing! Well . . . let's just say there stacks of leather was impressive. Cheers!

It comes with an operator's manual, needles, spool of thread, three bobbins, stand, motor, thread stand, stirrup plate, flat plate, thread snips and oil can.
