hi folks! First time posting here, hopefully I'm not stepping on anyone's toes...Last weekend I brought home "Pfaff 145-1B H2L" leather sewing material and been googling info on it. Found this forum and theres PRICELESS information here. However I learnt its basically spread on different messages / threads so I started this "All things Pfaff 145" thread to collect everything I've found on one place. For the past year, I've been playing around with Sheridan style carving. Indeed, this style of carving is rather ambitious but I'm getting more familiar with it and creating some pretty nice pieces. That being said, I feel as if my swivel knife is holding me back from progressing further with my works. I'm currently using an old Tandy craftool knife and looking for an upgrade. I've been looking online for a good, reasonably priced blade and I'm currently considering the Barry King knife and the higher-priced Leather Wranglers SK-B brass swivel knife. I wanted to ask if the SK-B brass's 135$ price tag is justified or should I go with the budget friendly Barry King knife?

Hello, I am new to this forum and very excited! I create custom browbands for horses, but due to Brexit, I've had to start looking for new suppliers again. The quality of the leather is very important to me, as well as the delivery timeframe. So I am wondering if any of you know where I can find empty channel, color or non color padded browbands, ready to use. I've alreday found http://www.horsefashionshop.de/ (do not like the leather quality as it seems very hard and painted) and https://www.kkressing.boutique/stirnriemen-rohlinge/ (very nice leather work and great quality, but not much on stock,...) . Here’s a last minute Christmas gift that was sent out. Wallet is constructed of 3oz black buttero with black 0.45mm waxed linen thread spaced at 3.38mm and black Uniters edge paint... I got this side of leather on sale from Rocky Mountain so I wasn’t able to have it split.. I usually prefer 1.0/1.5oz leather to keep the bulk down but I did a lot of skiving where I could to keep this project as thin as possible. Questions comment and critiques always welcome. I started making belts when I was 17, back in the late 60's. I started with just any old Tandy veg tan. At some point I found a leather, French Butt, that was lovely to work with and had a nice hand. It didn''t dry out and made beautiful belts. I have made belts off and on since, but three years ago started a small custom shop and I have yet to find a very nice quality veg tan leather like that French Butt. Does anyone else remember that or is there anything available today that might compare? Thanks for your help in advance. I live in New Mexico and local sources are few and far between.

Hi, I found this Durkop-Adler 367 sewing machine available for pick up locally, but I don’t know anything about it. I need a sewing machine that can sew multiple layers of 4-5 oz leather. I currently use various models of Consew RB-1 to RB-5, would this model work on that? Also the asking price is $1500, is that a reasonable price for it? I can’t seem to find a lot of information online. Thank you in advance! -
Not a leather piece per se... but still, leather-related Lately, in addition to leather work, I've been interested in metal - knife making and such. I have been wanting to buy myself a good round head knife, but was put off by prices - they go for anything from $40-$100. So, I decided to take a stab at it myself. Designed a template in Photoshop, ordered 1084 knife metal, and voila! I was rather proud of my first attempt. Still, I can do better next time. This was a learning experience.

Been a while since I posted any of my works.. Here is a wallet and keychain I've made for myself it was time to retire my prototype wallet made out of chestnut buttero. New wallet is EPI leather in navy color for the outside and inside is Alran sully in marine color. Stitching is black waxed linen thread at 3.38mm spacing done with French style pricking irons. Edges are sanded then burnished and sanded again with 3/4 coats or vernis edge paint in marine color. thanks for looking !!

Dear All, I want to know which material and machine do factories use to seal and coat the leather edges with a thick rubbery coat? I don't think it is Giardini, or Fiebings or Stahl or United or any of these edge coats, because I compared those to the rubbery edge coat I have on many bags and they are not the same.......I also don't think in mass production of bags they will waste time applying 3 or 4 layers of these edge coats..... I think it is a synthetic material... It could be the one in the attached photo but I don't know what is it? BTW this material is damn good and sustainable. Can anyone help me please.

1.3-1.5mm Italian cowhide upholstery leather. I have 3 full cowhides available, one in Navy, turquoise and hot pink, didn’t use them like I thought I would. Each vary in size, but around 50-55 sq ft total. Selling by the square foot at $5 per square foot. High quality and not cheap leather, stored inside in rolls.

i am wondering about how do the big factories finish the leather edges? what exactly do they use? which machines and materials to give the rubbery edge? i dont think they use giardini or vernice or fiebings or any other similar edge coat...... bec. i checked the rubbery edge of favtory manufactured bags and i am sure it us not normal edge paint... also for mass production they need something fast and cheap to apply on thousands of bags per day... by the way whatever they use is very elastic and lasts long.... can anyone help?

Hi everyone! I am planning to buy a sewing machine for a small business that I will start preferably next year. The sewing machines that have been offered to me are the following: 1. Juki DU 141NH 2. Juki DU 1181N 3. Mitsubishi LY2-300 BOB The machine that I need must be able to handle medium to heavy materials (I’ll be using a combination of canvas fabric and leather), as I’ll be making bags (backpack, small pouches and totebags). Also, the machine must be user-friendly and if changes need to be done, the machine parts must be easy to source. Each of the machine is being offered to me at $650.00. So I really need guys your expertise and recommendations as I am very new to this thing so my money and first sewing machine will be worth it! Looking forward for your suggestions. First off let me state that this was my first attempt at making a bag of this sort I usually make wallets lol Anyways I was asked by a customer to make a bag large enough for study material/books and some clothing items. My original idea was to make a tote with handles but along the way ended up deciding to make it a shoulder carry with a flap closure in case of unfavorable weather. So I basically Bit off more than I could chew and didnt manage my time well enough and ended up pulling an all-nighter to deliver on the deadline. Great learning experience and I realized I really like making bags. comments, critiques and questions always welcome. Thanks for looking !!

Hi Everyone, I'll be relocating to New Zealand (from the US) within the next several months and thinking about selling most of my industrial machines here, before I leave, and starting a-fresh there. The thinking is both to save on overseas shipping expenses, and also with the 220/240 voltage there, to get new equipment that is already set up for that current. Really an amazing collection of Weights, tanning methods colors and textures. Small scraps to whole hides, various species. Hi folks! I have recently aquired a brother DB2 B755-3 for sewing some pretty pliable leather. I think I'm using the correct needle size - 16 x 231 (DB x 1) NM 110 Size 18 ... I find sewing machine needle systems a bit mindbending... but I'm concerned the thread I'm using is incorrect and not going to be strong enough with normal wear and tear. I've got Coats Nylbond, in size Tkt 040. it also says Tex 070 but not sure what that means! Any tips? Thanks so much! -
