  1. Hello, I bought a Pfaff 345, unfortunately I've got a small problem with the stitching legth adjustment. I can't turn the knob stronger than 2mm. Does somebody knows how to solve that problem. In the pictures you can see the longest and the smallest length adjustment, possible at the moment. Thank you. Regards, Oakley
  2. I've got two puritan stitchers for sale. $1600obo for the pair. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/art/5234751955.html email tomahawkportland@gmail.com for more info.
  3. I have a Cobra Class 18 with a speed reducer and Brushless Digital Servo Motor on it. I have sewn on it for a year, now and feel that I am ready to speed up the motor but cannot remember the sequence to program the motor to run faster. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance. READ MY ANSWER IN THE POST BELOW. HOW TO PROGRAM THE SPEED ON THE DIGITAL SERVO MOTOR.
  4. Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me. I've looked in the forum but I can't find this information. I'm new to leatherwork and looking into buying my first sewing machine, I've read a lot of threads and have a few machines in mind, but my question is, can the machines in the $2,000 range do stitches starting outside of the leather? If that doesn't make any sense please take a look at the attached image, I'm looking for a machine that can do the stitch on the left, that starts outside of the leather, as opposed to inside as in the right image. I apologize if I'm not using the right vocabulary, but like I said I'm very new. Thanks in advance for your help. RG
  5. I am about to start training with a local leather crafter who is going to teach me how to make leather garments. I'm very excited about this! He's given me some research to do on equipment, and I was hoping people here might be able to help me out. I am trying to figure out what type of sewing machine I should get for my new shop. Previously, I have always hand-sewen things, but that is no-longer an option. I've been researching companies like Consew, Cowboy, Jujuki, Pfaff, and Singer, but I am having a hard time understanding the pros and cons of the many different machines offered by each company (much less how they compare to competing company's equivalents). I have also spent a LOT of time reading the threads in this directory. It has been very informative, and I am glad I thought to come here and check out the forum. What I am hoping to get out of this thread-posting is a recommendataion of specific models of sewing machines that I can research and compare to each other to help me make a selection. I'm feeling a bit too overwhelmed with all of the info out there and I'm hoping some of you can help me focus my search a bit. I am primarily going to be working with light-weight garment and light-weight chap leathers, though occasionally I may work with something slightly heavier. What are some good models of sewing machines that YOU use and would recommend that would work with these types of leather? Thank you in advance, both for taking the time to read this long post as well as to reply. I look forward to hearing from you all! Respectfully, Paul
  6. Hello guys, my first post here! I am a complete novice to the leatherwork/sewing field and I am looking for some advice here. I would greatly like to get into the reconstruction of Nike's/Jordans especially, completely redoing the upper of the shoe with premium materials such as python, lamb/pig skin and eventually leather. I have been doing a TON of research but when it comes down to finding a machine Google just isnt good enough, i need help from a real person with some experience. (PLEASE VIEW WHAT IM TRYING TO DO HERE: https://instagram.com/JBFcustoms OR www.jbfcustoms) I am looking for a starter machine to do this stuff with. Through constant research I have found that one of the top reconstruction artist linked above uses both a flat bed and a post bed with a roller foot. I personally cannot afford 1 machine really, let alone 2, so I am looking for something that is good enough to get me through my trial and error stage and help me make some profit to purchase a better machine! I have looked up several diff kinds of machines... Post, flat, teflon, cylinder, walking etc etc, but its all like a foreign language to me. I would like my first machine to be able to handle at least 3,4 oz of leather as well as the python and pig/lamb skin material. So far the cheapest post bed Ive found is a Yamata 810 at about $600. I have heard that some machines can come with attachments to make in into a flat, which would be great since that post has that 7" stand, which would make it difficult to sew the material together before actually putting it on the shoe... Links to a machine that can do this?? Links to machines in this price range period? Can somebody lead me in the right direction?! Im located in Ohio... THANK YOU!!! (posted this in a leatherwork thread as well, im new to the site lol)
  7. I think I could use some help here. Recently removed the round point needles that came in the Techsew 4100 machine I purchased, and installed Organ 794 LR Size 230/26 with white 277 thread. First round was a complete disaster, finally managed to get the results shown in the photos. Not certain it is what it should be though, and I can't say that I'm happy with it. Any suggestions on what I should be doing to get this to be a better stitch? Also looks like it is blowing out the back, not a clean exit. One row is just with the needle, the second row has the thread.
  8. Decided to change some things up here and getting rid of a few machines. With these 3 machine you can cover all of your sewing needs. First up is a Cobra class 3 that includes a few pounds of thread, some needles and the heavy duty roller edge guide. Comes on the standard table with servo motor. Asking $1600 for it. Next up is a Highlead 618 walking foot machine. Will include several packs of needles, some 1/2 pound spools of thread, lots of bobbins and several feet. Have a extra bobbin casing and extra set of feed dogs. Machine is mounted on a table with servo motor and thread rack. Asking $875 for it. Last is a Singer 31-19. It is mounted is a long table with servo motor. Comes with a ton of needles and silicone pots. Asking $200 for it. All machines are located in Southern Indiana. Willing to drive a few hours to deliver for a slight fee to cover gas. Otherwise these are for pickup only. Shipped only if you arrange for packing, pickup and shipping.
  9. So I've gone and learned the hard way about ordering a sewing machine online... It's an Adler 169 which has been lengthened by an engineer. I won this baby off ebay and everything looked good, but it was damaged in shipping. Most of the knobs are bent or broken. I've ordered a new thread tensioner plate and will need to braze back on the end of the thread uptake leaver (if that works!) However, the worst of it seems to be that the end of the main shaft at the top of the machine is bent, right at the hand wheel (which may be distorted also). I think the whole thing was dropped on its end. Anyway, so my plan is to take this shaft out and have a machine shop straighten it for me, which apparently is a thing machine shops can do. Unfortunately, i'm having a hard time disassembling the thing. I'm also worried about reassembly. I know that I should be taking this to a professional, but I'm handy and don't live too close to anyone. Does anyone have experience in removing these things? I'm marking everything with a sharpie in an effort to not disturb the timing. Also, Does anyone know just how necessary the adjuster screw in the end of the rod is? Any advice would be soo greatly appreciated!! - Taylor
  10. I've recently acquired two manual skiving / splitting machines. Both are very old but in very good working condition. The blades on both I would like to source spare blades. I would say there is no chance of 'off the shelf' blades. One of them looks about the same size as a woodworking plane blade. The other, which has two holes in it to mount the blade, is a lot squarer but could be similar to a large spoke-shave blade. What I would like is either 1/ blades I can cut down to size 2/ blade stock I can cut to size and sharpen 3/ somewhere in UK that can make me blades to fit The sizes are (width across blade x length x thickness) 1/ 1 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 1/8" 2/ 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 1/8" As these are both old English machines the sizes will all be imperial. Can anyone help? Claire PS I haven't the facilities to retemper or put in a temper of anything.
  11. First thing I have ever completely stitched on the machine. Still need to replace the bobbin spring to deal with thread tension issues, and kind of messed up the plastic carbon copy cover, but for my daily use I think it will be functional. Debating putting edge coating. Open to suggestions for improvement as always YinTx
  12. I've made up my mind I need a bigger machine, so I'm posting this again. Like new Cowboy 3200 sewing machine. I bought this machine about 6 months months ago from Neel's Saddlery and now need a bigger machine. Used maybe 20 hours, well oiled and taken care of. Have flat top table also. Pick up only in SouthHill Va. 1600.00
  13. Hello, I'm sure this question has been asked here before, but I looked through the threads and didn't find what I was looking for. I am considering starting up a small business selling leather items I have sewn. I will be starting with children's moccasins. I have a basic sewing machine that is doing an ok job of sewing the leather, but I know I need to buy a better machine if I am going to make this a business. I am wondering what the best bang for your buck is when it comes to a machine that will sew leather well. I don't have thousands to spend on a new machine. But I do want something that will get the job done.
  14. I have a lead on a fortschritt skiver with table and clutch motor that used to be in an old factory that made firemen's hats in NYC. The buyer is asking $500 which seems to be a pretty fair price to me compared to cost of new chinese made machines. I saw it operational last night and it seems to be working reasonably well. My questions: Is there anything specific that I should look at that wears out over time? Belts and knife seem. Are fortschritt skivers interchangable with other skiver parts? Bell knife, feed wheel, etc? Are there any online resources that you can point me to in regards to maintainence/rebuild of this type of machine? Does $500 seem like a fair price? Thanks
  15. My new machine! I'm pretty sure it's a 'Pearson No.6 Harness machine'. There's what I presume is a serial or model number stamped on the top which reads 4949, if that means anything to anyone. It seems to be running relatively well, although I need to get some proper thread for it and fine tune the tension. Also, purely cosmetically it could do with a little bit of attention, I might touch up the gold lettering on the top wheel, and maybe even paint it black one day, but we'll see. Anyway, all in all I'm rather pleased.
  16. Hi, this is my first post on leatherworker! I have an industrial machine, a singer, for very lightweight sewing (I had to order special narrow needles) so I am looking to buy a new machine for sewing thick leather, 5-7oz I have found some good machine heads on ebay, Consew 255B, Singer 211W115, and very old but apparently in good working condition Singer 111W115 (someone I worked for had this exact machine, also old but very beautiful and reliable stitching) My current table and motor are in great condition, the motor is a Tacsew, clutch, 5.8 amp. My question is...possibly a dumb one...but will any/all of these machine heads fit and run with this motor? I read your post about clutch vs servo, but still felt unsure about combining a different head with my existing clutch. Thanks in advance! here is a photo of my motor.
  17. Hi All, I'm new to sewing and new to working with leather, but I have a collection of leather remnants and an inherited industrial singer sewing machine (20U-109) that I would like to start experimenting with. I'm interested in trying my hand at making handbags and possibly some leather garments. I've read online that my machine can be used to sew leather, but when I called about getting my machine serviced, I was told that it would not sew leather. Has anyone used this type of machine for sewing leather? And more importantly, what kind of machine would you recommend to someone who was just starting out sewing leather? Thanks All, for any insight you may have! Emma
  18. Hi guys, I just got a quote for a Consew 206RB-5 with silent servo motor from a UK supplier for £1,950.00 plus vat. That's over $3200 with tax... Seems pretty steep compared to US prices. Does anyone have any experience purchasing equipment in the UK? The supplier is www.anglosewing.co.uk. Are such high prices normal for England? At that price I would be better off buying one here and putting it in a shipping container, but I'd rather work with a local dealer and avoid the hassle of shipping overseas. Thanks!

  22. Can anyone give me any info on this old sewing machine? I know it's a Davis and the motor works. I don't have any numbers yet but I may be able to get them in a few days. A friend of mine is asking $400 for it or he'll throw it in if I buy his truck haha. He said it came out of an old saddle shop and can sew up to 3/8". He said it just needs to be timed. Would this be a good buy for a beginner? I mostly build holsters and other various goods, nothing too thick. Also how much would it cost to have it "tuned up", or is that something a mechanically inclined person could do on his own? If not how about a place to take it around the eastern Phoenix AZ area? Thank you to all!
  23. Hi guys. I'm refurbishing a Manufacturers Supplies Co. "Combination Skiver" probably from the early 60s. I think it's a knockoff of a Fortuna bell knife machine, or even a rebadged Fortuna. I say that because it doesn't match any of Manufacturers Supplies Co.'s patents, and they have a few for different machines. I need the main head unit belt (not the 3 phase clutch motor drive belt) and serpentine belt dimensions. The owners manual only includes part numbers. After 4 calls with promises of follow up, Manufacturers Supply Co. (still in business in St. Louis) does not appear interested in either selling the parts or telling me their dimensions. I can't fault them for not stocking $10 parts for a 50 year old machine. So — I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who has one of these or a similar Fortuna give me the dimensions of these belts so I can possibly avoid having to order 10 parts from McMaster to find the correct size. Thanks in advance.
  24. Hi, I'm new to this forum but I'm trying to find information for a friend of mine. My friend used to work in a manufacturing place for horse tack and at this place they had a machine for making designs on the computer, then they would print it out on special paper, roll it in leather dye, then place the template on leather and the design was transferred from the paper onto the leather via dye. That's the best I can describe what she would do and I've tried to find something that does that but I'm clueless on where to start. My friend doesn't remember any name brand on the machine or program so I don't have names to work with to start looking. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  25. Last summer I bought this Cobra Class 4 sewing machine new. Since then, I have been hired full-time and am in the process of moving to be closer to said job. I'm hoping to avoid having to move relocate this *very* heavy piece of equipment, and since I don't have time to devote to leatherworking, I'd rather see it go to a new home. It's been used very lightly for about 9 months, regularly oiled, and kept indoors. I got the deluxe package with it, including various accessories to go along with it. I'm asking $1800 for the machine, and all the accessories (including the table, lights, thread, etc). I'll also throw in all of my leather supplies, which include several sides of leather, lots of buckles, rivets, studs, and other various knick-knacks from Tandy, along with all leatherworking tools I have. I'd estimate the value for the other leather stuff to be from $250 - $500 alone. I'd rather not have to ship everything, so it'll be pick-up only. I'll accept cash or money order. Location is Auburn, Alabama, 36830.
