  2. Hi All, My name is Sonya and I'm new to this site and forum. The company that I work for just purchased a FAV AV2 Skiver. We have messed up the original settings on the machine and now I am unable to skive. Originally when we bought the machine it was skiving great. However, when we started using different types of leather, we had to adjust the feed roller, foot pedal etc. Since making these accommodations for the different leathers, we are unable to feed the leather through as well as it's not skiving. When I do get the blade to engage to skive, it eats the leather. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Sonya
  3. 5. Hello! I am a beginner shoemaker and have been trying to figure out an affordable and dependable way to sand and shape leather soles and heels. I purchased a harbor freight belt sander that broke down very quickly. Then I purchased a black and decker grinder that was modified by a shoemaker that exploded and almost took my eye out! Anyways, I would love to hear what people are using to shape leather that isn't a huge investment like the industrial ones but one I can use at home and feels safe. Can anyone recommend perhaps a better brand for a belt sander? Regards, Maia
  6. Have been tasked with cleaning and selling out an unused section of our warehouse that contained machinery from an old leather and textile business. I am working on cleaning the machines and making sure that they are running. Since there is a lot of machinery if there is anything in particular that you are interested in I will work on those machines first. Here is a link to the photos on dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tujdfwzdc9hkq83/AADFDTb6k00SsRpH4fdkeizda?dl=0

  9. This thread is about the selection criteria for a leather goods workshop / production location. In my case I am keen to source a production site for messenger bags, weekenders and small travel goods from a workshop in Asia. I will bring veg tanned leather from Italy, Serafil thread and YKK Excella zippers, so in essence I need select a site based on design capability, available machinery and labor skills. I will be on site myself throughout the production cycle, but as a newbie, selecting a quality partner is tricky. Anyone with experience in this field? A guide to visiting workshops? What machinery ticks the box? Kind of questions to ask? A standard agreement form with details to tick off? Help is much appreciated.
  10. As a complete nooby, I've been reading the discussions on this forum for a long time. I'll be producing handbags, saddlebags, briefcases, portfolios, throw pillows, dog collars and leashes, among other things. I'll be using both chrome and veg tan. Lately, I've been assembling a list of bench and floor equipment for a shop. I'm trying to think ahead and cover as many likely situations as I can. My question is: What machinery do you find most useful, and what brands do you prefer? Please tell me about your favorite hand-operated, hydraulic, and electric equipment that you hold or have mounted on a bench or the floor. You can exclude sewing machines and small hand tools such as hand stamps and swivel knives. Thanks in advance for all your help. This forum is an amazing resource!!

  13. I'm in Commerce GA and re-starting my children's shoe business after way too many years. I still have my dies, got a good sewing machine, but had a tough time finding a reasonable clicker. I bought a used Tippmann, not good for what I need, so finally found a Schwabe on Ebay. It arrived the other day and it works! OLD baby clicker - only weighs about 500 lbs - flywheel, not hydraulic. I am chomping at the bit! My grandbabies need shoes!!! But the clicker starts, then doesn't stop. Continuous clicking until you turn it off. I've googled everything I could think of, can't find a machinist old enough to work on her, maybe someone here can advice? I am pretty good at taking directions. Glad to be on board - I've been here getting advice by reading for a while now, just can't get the leather bug out of my system!
