  1. So im making armor with a moderately thick leather. I'm trying to get part of my leather to a super exact light blue color. I was wondering what j should do to achieve that. Should I try leather paint and mix it to the right color?
  2. I have some regular acrylic paint, not the stuff designed for leather like Angelus acrylic. Will it work on leather? If so, when should I burnish my edges? I am going to be painting the entire piece up to the edges and I am worried that burnishing will ruin the paint... thoughts?
  3. I have 9 bottles of Tandy-Fenice leather edge paint for sale - ideally to a fellow leatherworker in Europe, as I am located in Brussels, Belgium. The 9 colors I have are: Navy Blue, Green, Yellow, Red, Neutral (clearcoat, basically), White, Black, Dark Brown, and Light Brown. I bought these just a couple of months ago in October and November from Rickert Werkzeuge where they sell for €29.95 each. In this photo album, you'll see the paints themselves, and I am also including the two projects I completed with these paints - a phone case with orange edges and a black stingray handbag. Other than a tablespoon of the yellow and red and about 20% of the black, the rest of the paints were not used any more than on a sample piece. I am selling them because I am moving back to the US (didn't know that when I bought them all!), and filling my suitcase with these 9 bottles of leather edge paint isn't really an option! I'm not expecting to get back what I paid for them (which is/was ~€300), so if you're interested, just make an offer and let me know your location to calculate the shipping costs! Thank you! - RF
  4. I've been working with leather off and on for 30 years. I have never had this problem before. I carve out my design, then I stain it. When I go to paint with the acrylics the stain bleeds through the paint coming to the surface changing the color I want. Can anyone help me? No matter what I have done it continues to come through the paint.
  5. Looking for information for how to dye or paint veg tan leather white in a way that would be resilient enough for daily wear as a belt. Thanks!
  6. Which is better for repelling dye/stain? I need to paint some letters light gray and dye the leather black. I've been experimenting with the two, and am still working on it, but though I'd ask if anyone has any experience in this area. I had planned to dye first, but it distorts the paint color if I paint on dye/stain.
  7. I've had good results using acrylic on veg tanned leather, but now I have a project that requires applying acrylic on oily leather. Is that possible? Do I need to treat the leather in any way before applying acrylic? Thanks in advance, RG
  8. Diluted water stain dyes water colored on to the raw tooled leather- then I'll follow up w serious super sheen blocking and antique gel saddle tan. Can't wait to see this!
  9. Hello, I just finished stamping out all my pieces for this project and then proceeded to test paint some samples to see how to most effectively create the look I need to create. I tried the following methods with angelus leather paint in white and black. The look I'm trying to get is a black border with white stamped nordic runes. Methods used: (Black painted leather stamped) fine paint brush with white on brush. (too messy, not clean enough) Repeated the above one, then used a stiff black sponge brush with black paint and got the Orange text result in picture... I did this by accident and now that I look at it look the best... (Black painted leather stamped) watered down white paint and slowly added mix into groves in leather. (crappy turn out as shown in picture.) (Black painted leather stamped) painted grooves white and use clothe to remove. (caused rough feeling white residue on black and made it look like crap and couldn't get off the bad white paint and the letter wasn't fully filled either. I tried this again and the white just dries way too quick for this method to work correctly.) (White painted leather stamped) Used Block dyeing technique with black paint. (Got black paint in letters and the black didn't cover everything i wanted covered. :-/) The picture of my test sample is attached. The orange letters shown seems to look the best now... Is this the correct method? is there a easier way to get the rune letters white? I have a lot to do with this project with little time still, any advice would be appreciated.
  10. So this thread I wanted to see what products were best in Leather painting or surface coloring applications. I'm looking for something for light colors like solid Yellow, solid Orange, solid White etc. etc. I'm seeing so many products out there. I can't tell what the difference is between them and what would work best. My projects normally go through rain and get worn a lot and go through abuse and I want something that won't chip off easy but also gives good bright colors that can bend and all and maybe even soak into the pours if possible... Or maybe I could dye it 1st and paint over it so that if it chips it'll have a close color under it????
  11. Just for the group- I am a nurse, and have had requests for years to paint shoes. However I always hated the thought of putting all that work into shoes, as I thought the paint would come off. Well, I did 2 pair of shoes two years ago, and wanted to let you know the results. Pair number 1- suede Birkenstocks. I sanded and pretreated the leather. I don't have a photo of these after 2 years, as the color faded badly. Total fail. Pair number 2- black leather danskos- the owner had worn these for about 8 years before she gave them to me. I spent a lot of time pretreating the leather. steps: clean, treat with leather cleaner/deglosser, clean some more, sand lightly, treat with cleaner again 3 times. Paint white. Freehand design. Seal with Angelus gloss sealer(2 coats). As you can see, they have held up very well. My friend says she has worn them at least weekly since I gave them to her. There is NO cracking or fading. Amazing. The biggest problem I see is that now lots of coworkers want a pair....
  12. Hello, I guess you can consider me novice, but I do have alot invested into leather crafting and I've done a dozen or so projects over the years. But I seem to hit the same darn brick wall every time I get into the coloring of leather. I get so much feedback on how much better paint is over dyeing and then how much better dyeing if over painting. And the only resources I can find only try to sell you the products you're looking at so I feel like I'm going in circles. I need help in getting taught what is the best solution when it comes to giving color to leather... I have Oil Based Fiebings dyes and they work great for the darker colors. Plus b/c it's oil based it should help keep the leather from drying out. Which it has and gives good deep colors. But I want to give my leather a Yellow color. And the last time I made something yellow, I entered it into a crafting competition and I got aweful scores b/c it wasn't bright enough and people thought I didn't even dye the leather... (attached are the pictures of the project.) After a few months the color gets darker and turns orangish or browner... It needs to remain yellow for years on end and deal with the stresses of being a Belt. Can someone help give real facts about what's best to use. I'm not looking for opinions b/c opinions more or less sale the product or products. I'm looking for cold hard facts on if paint is just better and what type of paint works best for what and then the same for dyes. I want to invest on the correct best products and not get stuck again with a lot of money tied up in dyes that just don't perform professionally when I was told it would. :-(
  13. I've tried doing a search on here & I have found some good information but none of the previous threads really answered my question. I'm curious about the order in which I should use the liquid latex when using paint. Should I paint the design on my leather item, cover with liquid latex, allow to dry, and then dye the remaining leather? OR Should I cover the area of my leather that is to be painted (still bare leather but design is stenciled on) with liquid latex, dye, remove latex, and then paint the design? I guess my concern is that the woodland scenics liquid latex I have contains ammonia and I'm worried that it will not allow the paint to adhere well to the leather if I paint after using it. Hope some of this makes sense! haha! Thanks in advance!
  14. I realized while painting pictures that when you use acrylics and they dry on your palette. This is an plastic type of palette ,not wooden one you get a mix of all the colours and you can pull the skin off when it is dry. These are the skins and they are great inlays or even parts for leather or even clothing. They are actually quite strong. This last one is an Elk hide no, not made of paint skins.
  15. What can be used to prime a very soft suede with a paint primer, so I can obtain an un-textured surface before the final coat (metallic paint)? The purpose is to separate the leather from the paint and to keep the characteristics of the paint (metallic) intact. Thank you! Nando
  16. I was never interested in painting leather. Never liked the heavy color. Then I watched this video. Really love the light color produced. More of a suggested, hint of color. What types of paint, and technique is used in this video. Thanks for the help!
  17. I have been doing some searching through forums history/archives in regards to painting & staining leather. I am doing some painting on leather and my question is about the staining. I've been using the Eco Flo All in One stains and more recently started using some of the Fiebings water based dyes in dark brown and chocolate as I prefer darker leather. My question is, how do I go about painting on those? I've noticed, especially with my white paints that they end up with a brown "tinge" to the white paint. In order to get rid of the tinge, it seems like I have to build up many many layers that possibly wouldn't be necessary if I could get rid of that tinge. I've tried deglazing my leather after staining but in order to get it "clean" enough to get rid of the tinge effect, I have to deglaze it so much that it really dries out the leather and gives it a gray haze. I've just been making some items for myself like spur straps, bracelets, etc. So they need to be able to flex and such without the paint cracking/flaking/peeling. So far I've had great luck with my paint but just seem to struggle with the stains & dyes bleeding through my paint. I would really like some advice on what I should do and would certainly appreciate the help. I have seen some people that paint their design on the unstained veg tan and then are able to stain after. I would imagine they would have to be using some kind of antique to do this as a liquid dye/stain wouldn't be very even if applied carefully around the design with a brush or wipe off the sealed painted area. I could really use some advice on this and would certainly appreciate any and all suggestions!
  18. Hi, I have tried to master the techniques of the dyeing and paint job in the photo attached. I believe that the green-tooling coloring is made by first applying a light layer of green dye in the tooling and then more green to the raised areas by a "dry-brush"-technique. I can get it to work, but I am not able to get the light green color somehow? The gold paint on the border is troubling me. I tooled it and then I blocked the raised areas with resolene (5 coats!). The gold paint stayed in the impressions after I wiped it with a clean cloth, but unfortunately some gold "glimmer" remains in the raised areas. I tried with both cheap and expensive gold paint, and I tried with a dry and a wet cloth. What am I doing wrong? One thing that I am totally at a loss, is the green "marvel"-like effect. Do anyone know how that is made?
  19. Hey everyone, I've done some searching but come up with mixed results. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best combo for painting and sealing on top of Fiebings Pro Oil Dye? I'm cutting, tooling, punching holes and then dying my pieces black — passing them off to a friend to do some painting on them (using a full range of color), and then she's giving them back so I can seal the paint and stitch them up. I haven't done any painting, acrylic or otherwise, on leather yet so I'm wondering if anyone had and product or combo recommendations given that I'm using the pro oil dye... Thanks in advance!
  20. Hey guys, as a fairly recent beginner of leather works (but man it does turn into an obsession pretty quickly huh?) I was hoping i could ask some advice abut dying. Here's the problem: i was making a guitar strap and wanted to keep the pattern in the original leather colour and dye the rest black, but as predicted the dye bled into the pattern area. I've read quite a lot about block-out but no real explanation as to how it is done, can smeone help me out here? Are there certain dyes that works with certain block out methods etc? Also after the failed attempt i ended up painting the pattern section with a very watered down acrylic paint (thinking behind it that if it is a bit wetter it will absorb into the leather better and not just sit on top). Is there anything i should do to treat this paint to prevent it from flaking or cracking or should i not worry too much? Below is a picture of how it looks so far, would love your input on this! Many thanks, /milton
  21. Hello all! This is my first post (how exciting)! I've just started out with leather working and have done some Tandy kits. I'm fairly happy with the quality of the work so far (no pics yet, sorry), a few rookie mistakes. A small splash of die in the wrong place on one wallet and tiny little tooling imperfections. Anyway! I don't really like the Tandy wallet designs. Might be because I'm from Australia and we have different wallet culture... or it could be that Tandy kits are weird. So, I want to start making them from scratch so I can make what I want and feel some real pride in my work. I'm trying to find a pattern to use and/or learn from but I'm having a really hard time finding any decent ones. I'm happy to pay for one, I just can't find one. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm looking to make a bi-fold in the same vein as the pic I've attached (ignore the red arrow, not relevant). The second part of my enquiry is about acrylic paints. I want to make a wallet that has a design painted on the front part (not near any bends) but I've heard that the paint can wear off pretty badly... On the other hand the paint manufacturers claim that their paints are fine on wallets. Does anyone have any advice about this? Should I just avoid it entirely or will it go fine if I put some finish over it? Thanks in advance for your help, R
  22. Hello. I want to buy some antique, but I do not know could it survive freezing during shipping from USA to Belarus? Does anybody have such experience? Which antique could be safety freeze and which not? And one more question about acrylic dyes: could I use art acrylic paints to color leather or edges? Sorry for my bad english.
