  1. Hello all! I'm making a costral/canteen for my wife and I'm looking at sealing it with melted beeswax (5oz veg tan) after wet-forming. Will acrylic paint adhere to waxed veg tan after it's sealed? I use Angelus leather paint. Cheers in advance Nathan Carlson Midgard Workshop
  2. Hi everyone, I’m making a custom Lambskin jacket and I’d like to paint on it and have it last a long time. Any recommendations on technique and paint? Thanks!
  3. As a Leather Artisan I have struggled with Edge-painting leather belt straps, so I engineered my own edge painting tools which work great and currently solved all my problems. Does anyone else have an alternative suggestions? I always love to hear and to learn from others and new techniques.
  4. Hi everyone, greetings from UK Thought I'll introduce myself. My name is Alberto, Italian born but living in London at the moment. I started doing leather work in 2020, while on furlough from my day job, and found it really interesting. Done quite a few pieces so far, including a couple of custome works for sale. All different style and looks, since I still haven't found my style. I have attached photos of my latest project. Would be good to get some reviews from people with more experience
  5. Hey y’all!! I’m looking to start a horse tack painting business, and I can’t find much information on the painting part specifically for tack. I don’t want to make my own tack, I just want to buy it wholesale and paint it. I know I need leather paint, the tack needs to already be tooled and all that, but what else do I need to know? Somebody mentioned today at my work that I couldn’t paint already made tack because it was oiled? Is that true? If it is, is there something I can do about it or somewhere I can buy already tooled tack that hasn’t been oiled? All I can find is tack blanks that haven’t been tooled and haven’t been made into the whole piece yet.I painted a tooled belt using regular acrylic paint and have worn it almost daily for a couple months, it it still looks great other than where the buckle holes are. Any help I can get would be great! Thank y’all in advance!!
  6. I am trying to see if anyone has had luck or has a better idea for painting white over dark brown fiebings leather dye. No matter what sealer we use it continues to bleed through. Anyone have any luck with this. Thank you
  7. I referenced in and earlier post about 2 belts im making for my children. As children tend to do, they want what they want, irrespective of Dad's ability (or inability) to preform the required tasks to make the thing! Both belts have stamping they want colored. One has butterflies and flower, one snowflakes. I have acrylic leather paint and tried very fine brushes on a scrap piece, it didnt go well. How would you tackle this? Could I use a solid "brush", like a rounded awl? The problem was, no matter how lightly I pressed, the paint still spilled out of the lines. I did not thin the paint, fyi. Thanks for any suggestions. Will
  8. ok, so I am working on a commission, I have already tooled the design, and am about to place my order for some Angelus paint. I am wondering what steps to finish this will be, as I am wanting to use some gel antique, and the angelus paint. Do I apply the paint first? do I put the antique on first? anything I should also do in between? I have never painted leather before, only dyed, so any helpful steps are most welcome.
  9. Hello everyone. I am a new leather worker and I am going to be starting a big project soon. I am planning on making a leatherbound journal for a gift. With this journal, I shall have a border and details carved/pounded in. I would like the journal to be black and the details to be red, however I am not sure how I should go about coloring the details. If I dye the details first and then do the base, I'm worried the black would sink in to the details, so I'm a bit wary about that tactic. If I paint the details, first I'd need to know the type of paint but then I'd also need to know how natural it will look. I also am unsure what I should use to seal the dye for each idea. This shall be on vegetable tanned leather. If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for your time reading this.
  10. Ok question. How do other leather crafters do it. i have been doing it for a long time. Black belts I use exclusively Herman oak 10-11oz leather. But anyways I stamp my letters then paint them. 2 coats angelus with 2-3 coats of angelus sealer . Then I use thr eco flo stain either the leteher dye or the water stain either or. I had a bad batch several bad batches of Fiebings dyes in black and USMC dye. Not good. I apply the stain and when I go over the letters I quickly wipe off dye on painted letters. Usually it comes off with good results but this gold letter I am just having problems and red. I need to go over and redo all the lettering . Question does anyone stain the whole belts first then use white on letters and then a couple coats of gold or other colors? Any help or tips should be so appreciated. Sorry the red is on another leather.
  11. Hey guys, Recently I've had a request from a friend to make him a dog collar and a leash for his wedding, for his dog to bring them the wedding rings :D I couldn't find white leather yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to paint natural veg tanned leather white, whith like an acrylic paint, a spray, and then apply some lacker to avoid smudging and cracking. I'd aprreciate any tips!! Thank you, Lourenço
  12. Newbie question again... i just bought a pattern of a hat I want to make & it brought up a question I haven't figured out yet... How do I make veg tanned leather a lighter color than it already is? Is it painting instead of dying, starting with a different type of leather, etc? heres a pic of the hat I bought the pattern for - I really like the orange leather underside the brim & might even(after I get it right a few times) try orange laces too... thanks, Russ
  13. I took on an order for a burnt/tattered flag on a phone case. I told the guy I'm not good at realistic, at all, and this would take me some time and a lot of work. I'm about to refund his money because I just can't do it. I cannot paint shadows, and for the life of me, I dlcant figure out how to paint a burn along the edges of a tattered flag. I've tried using my wood burner but it just melts the paint and still leaves me hopeless with painting shadows. I hate to do it, but I think I would be better off giving him his money back. How embarrassing. The first photo, all I've done is painted red, white and blue. The second photo is my attempt at painting the burn. I gave up. Laugh all you like, but I TOLD the guy I'm not good at this shit. He said he has faith in me and that we could figure something out he would like.
  14. I have some regular acrylic paint, not the stuff designed for leather like Angelus acrylic. Will it work on leather? If so, when should I burnish my edges? I am going to be painting the entire piece up to the edges and I am worried that burnishing will ruin the paint... thoughts?
  15. Which is better for repelling dye/stain? I need to paint some letters light gray and dye the leather black. I've been experimenting with the two, and am still working on it, but though I'd ask if anyone has any experience in this area. I had planned to dye first, but it distorts the paint color if I paint on dye/stain.
  16. I am making a dog collar that I would like to paint, dye and finish the whole collar with Eco-Flo Tan Antique Gel. I am using Angelus paints and dyes. I was wondering if there is a common order in which these steps are done or if it can vary depending on desired effect? I am guessing the Angelus dyes will not work over the Eco-Flo antique gel or become too dark to see the color. I may just paint the specific areas as I don't have any resist to keep the colored dye areas from the Antique Gel. Thank you.
  17. Hi, I'm trying to learn how to paint with Angelus alcohol based dyes for leather. I noticed quite a few people recommended these dyes. I'm painting on veg tanned leather. I'm looking for a tutorial or video that might explain some basics. I've looked all over you tube and this site and don't seem to be able to answer any of my questions. I tried to paint with some dyes last night and it turned out quite blotchy and just straight up YUCKY! I do have quite a bit of expedience with watercolors and acrylic painting, although not an expert AT ALL. Some of my questions: Should my leather be wet, damp, or bone dry? Should I treat my leather with anything before I paint on the dye? And most of all, do you know of any video's that might explain the process a bit? I contacted Angelus and asked and they have no answers. Thank you so much for any tips, I really appreciate it. The pic below is an example of the what I'm trying to achieve, a soft subtle color. I hope its ok to post someone elses work!
  18. I want to make a fire shield for my helmet I use at my Volunteer Dept and have fount that the only fonts that I like are a bit to advanced for me to carve. I would be able to paint the letters on like some of the custom helmet shield makers do but really dont know how to go about doing it. I guess I am trying to figure out the best way to transfer the lettering oulines to the leather to then be painted. Any thoughts on the best way to go about this would be greatly appreciated. The shield is going to be dyed black and the lettering will likely be white with a red outline or shadow. What kind of paints should I use? The acrylic feblings dye I have feels a bit thin but I guess I could make it work. What do I use to transfer the font from printed paper to leather? (I have Photoshop and Aiso I can print it out exactly the way and size I want it if that helps..) Thnaks for the help! Joe
  19. I'm interested in dyeing leather white, and obtaining the effect shown in this image. Anyone have any thoughts on how to color the leather white? Is there a white dye? I'd prefer not to paint the leather if possible. How do you suggest I do the shadowed effect?
  20. Hey everyone, I've done some searching but come up with mixed results. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best combo for painting and sealing on top of Fiebings Pro Oil Dye? I'm cutting, tooling, punching holes and then dying my pieces black — passing them off to a friend to do some painting on them (using a full range of color), and then she's giving them back so I can seal the paint and stitch them up. I haven't done any painting, acrylic or otherwise, on leather yet so I'm wondering if anyone had and product or combo recommendations given that I'm using the pro oil dye... Thanks in advance!
  21. Here is a project that I recently finished. Some of you may have followed its construction on Facebook. I wanted to post the finished piece here for others to see. I was asked by some friends to share what happened with this leather carving. This carving has found a home in Montana. It raised $4250.00 for the Great Falls Symphony Association at their Black Tie and Blue Jeans event on March 8th. The money that was raised goes toward their Education and Outreach Programs. This piece of art generated more activity and funds than any of the other items offered that evening. You can find out a bit more about what went into piece and why it is titled "Heart of Montana" by visiting http://elktracks.net/shop/print You can also get information on the prints that are now available.
