  1. Hello! After being a long-time lurker on the forums, I'm finally ready to take one step forward and show off one of my works. It's a medieval girdle purse for my girlfriend, not quite authentic, but I think it'll compliment her reseda green and brown reenactment dress nicely. The things I don't like about it are the knifework and the beveling on the flap and around the decorative opening in the belt loop. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it, especially with the stitching and the hue of my homemade red leather dye. Hope you like it! Cheers, Adam
  2. Hi all, I just finished using the rest of the Austin leather I had. I had just enough to make this decent sized purse, or whatever you want to call it. It's 9 oz. Austin leather, and I hand stitched all of the details. Thanks for looking! Monica
  3. Here's a photo of a bag I just finished. The bucket is all one piece and handsewn. I'm new to leatherworking, so my edges and my sewing are ok (i'm also my own worst critic), but I want it to be better. Any suggestions on working with such a soft, stretchy leather in regards to edge burnishing and/or skiving? Plus, what to seal and finish this leather with? I would love to maintain the lighter color (I know it will darken over time) and seal from water.
  4. As I needed a little bag to match the hat I made some time ago, I made this girdle purse. Actually it isn´t practical at all, but all I need (well.... let´s say one of the main priorities) is that it looks and feels as "realistic" (in the quality point of view) as possible. So this one is about 20cm x 20cm and is quite limited in the capacity, but I like it anyway XD The front is made of sturgeon again the rest is mainly goat and some calf skin (I guess, but I am not sure). The yellow inlay is made of wool. I hope you like it
  5. I finished assembling the cutting/assembly table for my tiny leather and canvas goods workshop (9' X 11') yesterday, so it's time to make a prototype leather product. The photo displays the components for a purse that will be given to my daughter-in-law for her birthday on Friday. It was planned as a convertible purse and bicycle saddlebag, but I need to keep the project as simple as possible so that it can be finished on time. Here are a few questions for you more experienced folks: 1. The sides are two layers glued up with contact cement. What glue or cement would you use for a project like this? It should be water resistant. It's too cold in Minnesota (still) to open the window, so a less toxic and smelly formula would be welcome. 2. I don't yet have an edger or a burnisher. What it be possible to use a scrap of wood to burnish the edges of the straps? 3. The main body is a single layer of 8 ounce leather. For items like this to hold their shape after heavy use, would it be better to use heavier material, or to glue up the leather as was done for the sides, or to stitch or glue in gussets where needed? The purse will be dyed black. It is named for Bodiam Casle in southern England. I look forward to your advice and am glad to be working leather again. PS - I moved this from the critique forum, since this one seems to fit better.
  6. Edited: Use this link https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-4Qszr7V8BTZ285RFVEQVdxNVU/preview?pli=1 I have FREE patterns for 17 purses, handbags, and other bags. Also a backpack, laptop bag, a baseball cap, bushman hat, fedora, and a newsboy cap. Oh, and a really cool motorcycle sissy bar bag (I’m planning to do this one first). Patterns are in PDF form (which I converted from DXF files I found on the Web), so they'll need to be sized. The patterns pieces are labeled in Spanish and I am not fluent in the language but I don’t see that as a showstopper. It’s pretty easy to tell what the pieces are. I will share these patterns with anyone who is interested, and I’d love to see the end products here on the forum. Also, if anyone is willing to help me convert Spanish to English, just let me know and I'll work on updating the files. Please use this link to the files: Broken link https://docs.google....Z285RFVEQVdxNVU https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-4Qszr7V8BTZ285RFVEQVdxNVU/edit Thanks, Deb Latest link: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-4Qszr7V8BTZ285RFVEQVdxNVU/preview?pli=1
  7. Hey all, Just finished this little purse up last night. I'm not sure what type of leather the body is made from but it's very nice stuff... great grain and color to it. Celtic horses tooled into some 5/6oz veg tan. This measures roughly 8x10 inches. Adjustable buckled strap. More pics to come! Cheers, Andy
  8. I don't specialize in purses at all (actually, I don't specialize in anything really), but a friend asked me to make some purses for his girls to save "College Money" in. He wanted them to have a coin purse, a bill slot (the bill slot is behind the coin purse), and a solid closure. Jordyn likes monkeys and Allison likes zebras. This is what I came up with, thanks for lookin'.
  9. Hi All! I've dyed some purse shoulder strap edges black (not veg tan), let dry 24 hours, and then have burnished with saddle soap. The edges look alright, but I tested with a little water and buffed with cloth to make sure that nothing would come off on someones clothes and sure enough, black. So, my "water resistant" dye is a bust? or did I make a mistake by using saddle soap? I want to make sure I get happy customers...not customers that need me to buy them new shirts. :/ Noted that I could try to roll edges, but I'm not quite at that level yet! Any help is much appreciated!
  10. Had a costumer ask if I could make a saddle purse so I gave it a whirl. what do you think?
  11. Here is a purse that I have been working on. I tooled my three Quarter horse heads on one side and a full Quarter Horse body on the other side. https://www.etsy.com...ovejoyCreations
  12. This is a Quarter horse purse that I am hand tooling. I put three different Quarter horse heads on it.
  13. Hello all, I've tried doing research on stitching/lacing deerskin but haven't found anything relevant. I've made some small deerskin pouches using an old Morse sewing machine with upholstery thread and had good results. I'm wanting to step up to deerskin handbags, but most of the ones I've seen are laced. I like to handstitch my bags (see example pics) and was wondering if that was OK to do on deerskin because of stretching. I wouldn't mind lacing a few but need to acquire a lace cutter for matching lace. Or does it even matter - both are fine and it's just aesthetics? I'm still a newbie and coming up on a year working on leather as a hobby. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

  15. This was an exercise in frustration but a great learning experience. The design was wrong for the stiffest of the faux alligator, which led to many changes as I went along. Also, I am learning the ins and outs of the new to me industrial machine. The stiffness of the leather meant a rethink of many things as it just couldn't behave the way fabric or a more drapy leather would have. I have never understood the need for a patcher as well as I did doing this. Many of the things I wanted to do I couldn't because the leather would not bend that way and my machine did not want to cooperate and sew sideways. Also I did learn the need to glue everything, even if I didn't think it needed to be. Things shifted in unexpected ways. So, a great learning experience. I am stubborn enough I will use it anyway, warts and all.
  16. I am looking for those rhinestone gun embellishments that are so popular on purses, I am wanting to put them on the corners of saddle blanket. I have done searches on internet but not sure what to search for. I either get lots of guns or purses, or little conchos. Anybody know of any sources to get them or what to search for. Have gone brain dead trying to find them. I am sure they are some place because there are tons of purses with them.
  17. From the album: My leather work so far

Easy use off scrap pieces. Two pices of leather and a zip.

  18. Well, I finished it! This is my mothers Christmas present. I know that Santa clause will be giving her a pair of binoculars, so I decided to make her a case! I'm pretty happy about how it turned out seeing as its my first bag. I learned a few things during the process, which is what it's all about!
  19. took some time this weekend to make a new bag for the sister-in-law. Hope she likes it.
  20. Hmmm, General Tso Chicken is so good for China King in Republic, MO. But, looking at the box, this is a cutting template! 45 min later... It was fun, but needs a redesign to be ready for prime time.
  21. I have only been doing leather work for about 2 months so i figured i would show yall a time lin eof my projects and progress. 1# was this awful crooked and hard to make wallet that i did with no tools. Its a turd but i was still very proud of it. #2 was several of these minimal wallets (these i like quite a bit and carry one) #3 was an attempt to make myself a holster for my mark II target. This turned out ok but i learned a bunch and made my dads much nicer. #4 this is my dads holster. He killed this snake so i did a getto tan and attached it to his blackhawk holster. I was very proud of this one. The sewing looks nice, it has nice burnished edges, and great fit to the gun. #5 a purse for my wife. I jumped off the deep end with this. It took probably about 30 hours and lots of sweat and fustration. The inside is lined with lamb skin. Its 4-5 oz veg tan exterior, canyon tan eco flow with mahogany antique, resolene then mink oiled. Tooling coulld have been better but it was pretty much my first tooled piece (other than the 3x5 instructive piece that comes with the tandy set). She loves it. for my next job i am making myself a messenger bag based loosly off the saddleback leather one.
  22. I'm about to spend a *lot* of money on a handbag with leather handles. The handle is made of good quality leather and comes nearly straight. It is supposed to mold to the wearers shoulder over time, but a lot of people have reported ripples on the underside of the handle. Is there anything I can do to my bag when I get it to avoid this problem?
