Ok so I spent way too long hand sewing this thing, mostly due to the straps. I'm pretty happy with how it came out though! The leather is a really soft strong navy blue, and the interior is cotton. I'm rather pleased with how well I lined up the pockets, I used up just about all of the fabric I had in this pattern for it.

So, staring a prototype for a small clutch (eventually going to do in croc). Pic below shows outer and lining. I’ve glued the lining completely to the two side gussets, but I’m curious if the lining gets fully glued to the main body, or just close to the edges where it’ll be stitched? Also, how do you account for the turn when the main body is folded; do you simply make the lining shorter than the outer, if you’re not completely gluing the two together? Thanks!

I have an expensive buffalo leather messenger bag, fabric lining, I've used non-stop as a purse since I got it. Last night I slipped on mud and fell into a pond. (Not deep, thank goodness.) It took a couple of minutes to get out. The purse was underneath me and the zipper pockets were open. I poured water and mud out of it even before I got me out of the pond. We wiped off the surface mud as soon as we got inside. I'm not too worried about that -- I've got saddle soaps and leather conditioners and all. Packed the bag full of paper towels and left it in a warm room, out of direct heat currents, overnight. This morning the paper towel's soaked and it's dirty enough I can tell there's mud inside. The fabric for the lining is something the manufacturer gets -- printed with the designer's name. I need to get it clean without doing damage to the leather. Any ideas? I have e-mailed the manufacturer and asked them for help. Thanks!

Hi , all! Part of my plan for 2018 is to spend more time here (and less on Facebook!) sharing our passion for all things leather. So here is my first "share": Check out Chriswdesigns.com. She designs handbags/purses for fabric but uses a lot of vinyl trim and I have made a lot of her patterns using thinner leathers that have been real stunners. I am finishing one this weekend that I will post pics of.

Purse for my mom
Rolandranch posted a topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Hello, everyone! My mom is on a trip so I decided to make a surprise for her when she gets back. This purse is from 6 oz. veg tan and lined with suede. The strap is 8 oz. I hand tooled all of it from a pattern in a book. It took me an estimated total of 30 hours from start to finish. Let me know what you think! (My mom hasn't seen this yet!) -
So I made my first purse for a buddies daughters birthday. It's not perfect but I believe she'll love it. Lots of learning from this one

Finally got around to making myself a purse! I made it a bit big, but oh well. It measures 14x14 with 4in gussets. Zipper in the top. Strap pattern is from Don Gonzales and skull pattern is from Ride Hard Leather.

I wasn't finding a topic on it already. But I had a question around bag and purse design that I was curious on. This centers on bags in particular that have a fold over flap, and not ones that zip or close at the top. Is there a reason why you would make the back and flap two separate pieces? The designs I've made myself have all kept the back and flap as one single piece. But I see many that are two. Is this just to accommodate using smaller cuts of leather? Thanks, Charlie

I figured I had to try one eventually, and my trophy wife indicated a desire for something small, cross-body, lightweight, that would carry her Ruger LCP, 3 cards, a bit of cash, and keys. Oh, and an i-Phone. Mission accomplished. It took a bit of design, re-design, re-re-design, to make it small and lightweight. In the picture, the front flap looks huge, it's actually the same width as the back of the bag. I'm thinking of tapering it after it makes the top bend. The additional sleeve is very thin, and will carry the cards and cash either in the bag itself, or in the rear pocket. The outer bag stitching got a little erratic on the back side. I didn't particularly like doing the corners on the gusset. I did this type of construction so I could try an inner and an outer join of the gusset to the bag. Basically taught myself as I went along. I did do a small practice corner for the front overlap corner. Good thing, it was a challenge. Okay, I took another picture of the bag, from an angle. It doesn't look at all like the picture above where the flap looks huge, it's actually not bad in person. The flap stays. The boss sez she likes it that way.

A friend of mine is requesting a purse similar to this. I realize its a lot of work, and there are techniques I need to learn. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you, so much!

Question, I've seen many bags with fringe and the edge is braided or whip stitched all together. I'd like to know how this is done, so the fringe is facing front. I did a sample of how I think it's done but need your knowledge to be sure. So, I have the bags edge (if you will/sample) and glued the fringe in place "wrong side" to the back of the bag. I've braided all three together. The fringe is facing front and there are no unfinished edges - looks good....however, I'd like it to lay flater. A bit of wear and it will hang more relaxed...what's your opinion please & thank you so much in advance.

Client wanted a small red purse that had this exact clasp on the front, a short strap/handle, and that was about it. I had a hell of a time with the red dye, but I think it turned out all right. 5-7 oz veg tan, Ritza Tiger thread in .8mm red, Eco Flo dye in Scarlet Red (about 3 coats), and about 3 coats of Fiebings Leather Balm with Atom Wax, 2 coats of Resolene, and a spray-down of Saddle Lac. And she's a horse lover and trainer, so I added a little horsey heart charm for some personalization.

Hello, does anyone know where I can find a good fanny pack/hip purse pattern. I'm curious as to what may be out there. Hoping for one with a couple pockets on the outside and maybe a zipper pouch inside. I seem to have a lack of vision today and can't seem to design one I like. I attached a photo of kind what I'm going for. Any help would be grateful!
