I'm revamping some original McLellan saddles for reinactment and the rivets are a bitch to get my anvil under to get them in the original holes. I'm making due, but wondering if there is a hand tool that would set the burr and squeeze it down, and possibly round it? It's a royal pain trying to manipulate the saddle and hold it in the correct position to barely get the tip of the anvil under the head. (I'm using round and flat head brass rivets with burrs, if that makes any difference.) As we will most likely be making some modern versions in the future, I would like to have a tool to make this process quicker and easier. I've looked for tools online, but all I'm finding are the typical hand setters. Thanks in advance!

I've read a bit on the various common types of rivets and it says that double capped/rapid rivets aren't usually used for strength purposes. How far does that actually extend though? Like having a dog leash for an 80lb dog or a belt? Where would be a good rule of thumb where you need to upgrade to higher strength rivets? Also, I just ordered a large pack of double capped rivets (not paying attention o the fact they were double capped). I have just started to work with leather and the ones I started with were the single cap rapid rivets. After doing a little research, it doesn't seem like there are very many advantages to single cap over double cap. Are there any areas that single cap rapid would be better to use? Such as an item where the back end would be against the wearer like a belt or collar or would double rivet still not be noticeable over the flat back of a single?

Hello, I'm trying to find 104 tubular rivets in the UK, ones that are similar to the rivets from weaver leather supply. I need them in brass and stainless steel but have had no luck so far, if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great! Thank you for the help

I'm looking for a supplier of small diameter rivets for leather of about 3/16" to 1/4" thickness. Also shorter ones for 1/8" thickness. Something with a clean head and finished crimp. Hi All. I need some help with rivets. I have two leather underground miner belts. They are not legal anymore underground and thought i could repurpose them. The have different rivets that are hard to disassemble. Has anyone run into these rivets? And what is an easy way to disassemble them? Thanks

Do you want to increase productivity and profits with a great snap machine that is easy to use, and built by a reputable company still in business? One pair (one female, one male) of fully automatic, electric powered, 20 line, snap setting machines for sale. These are older model machines manufactured by the Ho Hung Ming company in Taiwan (https://www.hohm.com). They have a US location at: Ho Hung Ming USA Enterprise, 13525 Alma Ave, Gardena, CA 90249, Phone: (310) 327-4847. I have inquired about these machines from Ho Hung Ming, and they say the machines are older, and parts are no longer inventoried. They do not have owners manuals and no record of the serial numbers. One of the advantages of these older machines is that they are simple mechanical machines built to last. Like an old car, they are easier to repair than newer ones. In 22 years, I have never needed to repair these machines. They still run like a beast. This forum only allows me to load one image, due to file size, but I have lot's of images, that I can email you. I also have some videos of me using the machines that I can send. I purchased the machines from Melanie Machine Company in Vernon CA 22 years ago. The machines have hoppers that hold about 500 snaps. I have used both machines a lot, and they have worked great for me with very minor problems. Occasionally, a mal-formed snap would get stuck in the raceway or throat. These parts are easy to detach and clean out with a tube brush. When a snap gets clogged in the throat, it has always been cleared free with a long nose screw driver. Maintenance is easy, with colored holes to indicate where to add oil. Both machines have locator lights, and come with a simple adjustable guide/gauge. I have cleaned the machines and had them serviced by a sheet metal company who smoothed out all dents and dings. They made and installed a new cover for the male snap machine. It is not painted. The machines are in great mechanical working condition, rust free, with some paint chipping away in small spots. The new owner is responsible for painting the machines. A simple centering gauge is included. The new owner is also responsible for transportation including cost to transport. I do not know how much the machines weigh, but they are very heavy and I am guessing 300 pounds each. I am asking $4,000 (plus 8.5% CA sales tax) for the machines in as is condition, and will consider all offers. The machines are in my storage unit in the mission district in San Francisco. I can show them to you and you are welcome to try them out. Again, these are for 20 line rings snaps, NOT 24 line.

Hi! My name is Carrie and I have been playing around with making my own bags because I couldn't afford the ones I wanted to buy so I decided to try to make my own! I am IN LOVE with working with leather and am learning so much (mostly by trial and error). I like unlined leather feel and look for the inside of the bags, but am missing having a pocket. I like having the outside look clean without any stitches (I use a sewing machine to sew my leather). I'm stumped and thinking there is not a way to accomplish the look I want. Any suggestions? I was wondering if anyone has used the aluminum burr rivets and what their opinion is? Tandy carries them and I tried them on a dog collar. They were nice to work with. I can't seem to find another source for them other than Tandy. I'm just wondering about longevity. I need something strong and silver colored. I know I can use Chicago screws but I was looking for something a little thinner and lower profile. Thanks, Julie

Well, I finally made the plunge yesterday. Tandy had a sale on the Pro Hand Setter, and with my discount, it was significantly reduced. I already had a lot of the sets for it, as I'd been planning on using my Harbor Freight press, but couldn't find a way to keep the sets aligned well and using the 2D/3D stamps and alphabet stamps was a bit wonky. This setter has a table with rear guide rails that are adjustable and will really improve accuracy. I can also put hole punches and stitching chisels in it. I tried it out with many of the sets last night, and was impressed. No more clinching over rivets! I still need to get the Segma snap sets and wide rivet set. Line 20 and 24 I have. The only issue I see is they don't provide a way to lock the angle of the alphabet and 3D stamps to keep them aligned with the piece. The Tandy video on using the setter with alphabet stamps shows the guy mis-aligning the first letter very noticeably. I'll have to get into my engineer mode, (yes, be VERY afraid), and see if I can come up with something. Jeff

I try to skive my leather so that it is the best thickness for the application. But, when I try to select a snap, or rivet length, they are always too short, or too long. I know that brass and copper rivets with the burr, I can cut it properly. But it seems that all the "factory" length ones are just wrong, as opposed to just right. Is there a source of "in between" sizes? Jeff

I’m looking for some of this hardware, this is off of a German military bag from the WWII. All the riveted in buttons and then this sam brown type stud are aluminum, I don’t care so much about the aluminum as I do finding something this shape, it’s almost like some kind of shouldered rivet. Anyone know about these? Thank you!

I am working on a project where I am trying to connect pieces of leather with my copper rivets. I have both #9 and #12 rivets. I also have the tools for each size. The issue I’m running into is after I punch down my washer onto the rivet, it comes loose. I have tried switching the different size washers (thinking I had mixed them up) and that didn’t work. I’m really not sure what is going on or what I’m doing wrong. I have ruined so many rivets and I wanted to see if anyone here had any pointers on how to get them to stay tight after I set them with the setter. Is it what I’m using as an anvil? I’m so confused. Hi. I am making a bag and bed to put a rivet on the side just like this bag in the picture. My brain is telling me that putting a hole through the seam will make the thread break. But dooney and Bourke does it ...so there must be a way to do this without breaking the thread and risking a weak seam that will come apart. Anyone has any advice on doing this? Also what tools makes those grooves like the one on the loop?

Is there a general consensus as to which rivets are "the best" - e.g. best hold, easiest to set, best price? Assume for the sake of discussion that the backs will be hidden and only the fronts/tops will be visible, so overall appearance isn't the big issue.

Hello, all! I'm looking to create something similar to this, and I love the dainty look of the fasteners. The problem is, I have absolutely no idea what they are. Looking for a source of semi-tubular brass rivets with a flat head. It seems like the semi-tubular rivets available online has a round or oval head. I'm also searching for #12 solid brass rivets wit a head smaller than 3/8". Don't know if these are even available, but figured this was the best place to ask.
