  1. Good morning. I have bought a building which had up until 3 years ago been operated as a leather shop. It has riveting machines, punch out machines, cutting machines, skiving machines, pretty much everything needed to manufacture horse halters, leashes. leads, etc. It not only has all the machinery, it has 1,000's of pieces of hardware (rivets, caps, o-rings, d-rings, square rings, buckles in numerous sizes (brass and nickel plated), most of the buckles, if not all, are made by a company called North & Judd. There is also 1,000's of pieces of hardward like snaps, latches, swivels, snap bolts, etc. And not to mention the 1,000's of pieces of inventory like chains for leashes, horse halters, dog collars, strips of leather which were never finished...well you get tthe idea. If anyone is interested in some of this, please let me know. We have just begun loading some of this stuff on eBay, but if someone in the business can use it that would be great. I am going to begin a Drop Box page with some of the pictures and will post an update shortly with that link. Thank you.
  2. I am starting my leatherworking adventure with a fairly simple piece. However I am having some trouble pin pointing this leather. http://imgur.com/a/tOzC5 In the album above is a picture of the hound from game of thrones. He has armor that is studded leather strips of cowhide (At first I thought it was veg tanned that was just backgrounded but that is actually full grain cowhide atf sides.) Underneathed the leather is rivetted into a different type of leather and I cannot for the life of me pin point what it is. It looks to be suede, however I just think it looks thicker. You will also notice that around the edge of his costume it seems like the leather is folded in, how do I create that effect? A Skiver and some cement? Or should I hand stitch. If you look at the second picture you will notice that it is hand stick on the sides with thread, that is the leather that Im trying to pin point. Its my first post here, please be kind if I am asking a silly question. Thank you.
  3. Anyone seen these before? For the life of me I can't find a supplier.. I can find tons of regular copper rivets, but none of the jiffy, rapid, or double cap rivets.. Thanks Todd
  4. I have the Tandy Hand Press, but there are times I need to set rivets in places that cannot be reached with this press. I also tend to use a thicker, stiffer leather, so I cannot bend it to make it fit underneath. Obviously, I can set them by hand, but is there something that exists that is "long-armed" or something? Sometimes there are a lot of rivets and I'd much prefer to use a press or something... Thanks in advance! M
  5. Hi, I'd love some help!! I'm trying to set 6mm and 10mm rivets that have some blue rounded stones in them and I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. When I go to pull them once they're set, they always seem to pop out. I do have to give a small amount of force to get them (but not thaaaat much really!). Is this normal? Or is there a trick to really setting these beautiful rivets in so they're there for "good"? Also, in addition to that question, I'm wondering if I'm not setting them in big enough holes? They seem to stick out more that sitting as flush as they could to the leather-tips?
  6. Hi Everyone, My husband, Wayne & I are just now learning about leather craft & looks like the right place to be. Wayne has made a few knife sheaths, thru trial & error & they are beginning to look pretty good. I have upholstered antique furniture in leather & now see how I could make things so much more decorative. I was so excited to find this site. So I have a question. Wayne has 3 old Rex 27 rivet setter presses. Does anyone know what size rivets this rivet setter uses, so I can order these for him. He has used the little single handle snap-in setter, up to now. I have just now ordered Wayne 28 of the 3D stamps from Tandy. They are having a 2 day sale, giving the Gold Elite Club price to everyone, today & tomorrow. Thanks for any information You can give us.
  7. Does anyone have a line on custom copper rivets, steel snaps, or Chicago (sex) screws? I need some with my mark stamped in them. Thanks
  8. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a supplier for solid brass rivets - double capped, in a variety of sizes (both in brass finish and nickle-over-brass) I'm also looking for the 10mm glove snaps Tandy sells - they got rid of a lot of their bulk packages, and the price for 10 snaps is ridiculous. I've already checked Weaver (who surprisingly only seem to sell copper rivets and rhinestone ones), Brettuns Village, Zack White, Ohio Travel Bag, and a few others - but I'm having a hard time finding what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? I've found the glove snaps on alibaba.com, but my faith in them is pretty low since they are made of iron - which will likely rust. If it helps - I have a business number and am eligible for wholesale pricing. If anyone would be willing to share where they buy their rivets from (I have a rivet press, if that helps) I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks Victoria
  9. Hi. I have a question for those of you who use copper rivets please. I am making a men briefcase for someone and this is my first briefcase at all. I would like to use copper rivets for the handle and shoulder strap attachments and since I have never used these rivets before I would like to know - are they going to change their color with use? Will they green? I am going to use Eco Antique Gel Saddle Tan color and I am going to use wax mixture for some waterproof (my customer asked me to). The mixture contains two waxes (beeswax and carnauba), linen seed oil and turpentine. I know the copper does not really match saddle tan but I do not have anything else except of those antique brass rapid rivets from Tandy and I am not sure they are strong enough to last for years (if you think they are - please let me know so my problem is solved). I am wondering if these copper rivets will change color after some time? I think it would be nice if they darkened a bit to go with the main bag color, but it would be bad if they gone green or something else weird. I do not want the man to come back for his money as I do not like upsetting my customers. If copper is not good, then could you advise me some strong and reliable rivets to hold the strap and the handle like forever please? I would appreciate any help on this matter. The buckles and strap holders and dees are solid brass. Thank you in advance for your help! Regards, Era
  10. Hi ~ I am having difficulty setting my snaps and rivets: when I hit the setter with the mallet, the socket/stud nearly always crumples diagonally, instead of compacting straight down into the cap/eyelet. I am using an anvil underneath and using the correct size setter for my line 20 snaps too. I've even used a mirror to make sure that I'm hitting the setter straight on and not from an angle. Is there a technique for swinging the mallet? Setter suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate your advice... Thanks!
  11. Hi my friends, I took advantage of purchasing the Tandy craftool press while it was on sale this month. I've been wanting to buy one for years and the price seemed better this month. I made up a quick lasered tool holder that keeps all the dies I bought very handy. I am sure one could be easily be made out of wood or other materials. What do you guys do? I am open for good ideas. Thanks, Joyce~ DIES_STAND.pdf
  12. Hi guys this is my first post. I hope I could get some help with this. My brother has a leather tool pouch that's about worn out, he asked me if I could make him a replacement, so I told him I would give it a shot. It's a simple pouch here's a picture of it, well this one is new. (see attachments for original). The sides and bottom are riveted not sewn, my question is how do I set the rivets on something like this. The first side I imagine would be easy because I have access but the second side I wouldn't have normal access to because it would be enclosed. Thanks for any help.
  13. Awhile back (maybe half a year) I bought a few hundred steel rivets with gunmetal plating. They were a very pleasant, dark metallic grey in color, and I became rather fond of them. Unfortunately, I neglected to keep a record of where I initially picked them up and now that I've run out, I cannot find any more of them anywhere I was hoping someone might be able to direct me towards some rivet suppliers (double-capped). Thanks!!
