  1. I’ve never used a sewing machine before and just stitch bags and wallets by hand. I am considering a second hand Juki LS-341N as my first machine, and I have a few questions. I’m really hoping you could help me out. Is Juki LS-341n a good machine for stitching 2 to 3 layers of 2mm vegtanned leather? How about oil or chrome tanned leather? Denim? Thick canvas? Do I really need a servo machine with it? I was told by a local dealer that it is more expensive than a clutch motor and since electricity in our country is not that stable, any fluctuations will damage the computer board of the servo motor. Will using an AVR solve the problem? Also, what specific things should I look for in a servo motor? I also remember the dealer saying that locally available servo motors are too weak. We use 220v here. Can I use a 110v servo motor from the US and just have it shipped here? Is that a good idea? If yes, what specifications for the transformer should I use? If I won’t be able to get my hands on a servo motor immediately and have to use a clutch motor, what should be the specs? What should I ask the dealer/mechanic to do with the clutch motor so I could use the sewing machine while waiting for a servo replacement? If I use the machine with denim, or denim and leather, do I need to switch to a clutch motor? For 2 layers of 2 mm thick vegetable tanned leather, what kind of needles should I buy? How about for 3 layers? I plan to use Vinymo thread. What’s the thickest size I could use with the Juki 341n and what kind/number of needle is appropriate? If I go a size thinner, what’s the corresponding size of needle should I use? I’ve read that some sewing machines tend to leave marks on the leather. What is that part called? Is there a special tool I could use to avoid that? I’ve also read that some people had to file down the ridges. Could I buy an already-smooth one? What other things/attachments should I buy so I could maximize the use of the machine? Sorry for bombarding you with questions. Although I’ve read some posts pertaining to this specific machine, I wasn’t really able to find out if it’s okay to use it with vegtanned leather. Thank you so much!
  2. I recently inherited a Kenmore e6354 sewing machine that needs some TLC and parts (foot pedal). It was my grandmothers and I would love to use it if the cost (maintenance+parts) justifies the value of the machine. The first quote I received was just under ~$200 for parts and repair/tuning. I noticed Tandy is selling a Singer 4452 that can also be found on Amazon for $207.00. I'm trying to decide whether I should invest in the older machine or buy a new one. I plan to use a machine to sew leather bags and heavy canvas/denim bags. Would either of these work to sew through two pieces of ~6oz leather? Thank you all in advance for the help! Jack
  3. Concept Setup efka dc1550aB321 durkopp adler model 366 Hope you enjoy, maybe a little technical for some to follow for seven minutes, thanks so much for watching. A lot of work went into this for sure. 1080P Available within settings, clear video of control panel gauges buttons presser foot roller
  4. Very lightly used Cobra 4-P. In great condition. Less than 100 hours. Was bought as a hobby machine that got very light use. I am moving and need to sell. Includes all package accessories minus a few needles. I will include all the thread I own as well. North of Austin, Texas. Will require pick up or buyer can make shipping arrangements. $2200.00 message direct if interested. Thank you Kristi
  5. I have an Artisan Toro 3200 for sale. I purchased the machine new in 2010 and estimate it has been used 150-200 hours. It comes with pedestal stand and table top, left, right, and double presser feet, and roller guide. I'll also include extra needles and bobbins, as well as several spools of thread and machine oil. The machine has been well cared for and is in excellent condition. Asking price is $1600. I won't be able to ship so pick up will be the only option. I'm located in Colorado but am willing to meet within a short distance for delivery.
  6. Hey there folks, My parents have asked me to help them sell their Juki LU-1508 to help pay for medical expenses. I believe we've had this machine since early-to-mid 2000's. My folks re-upholstered our boat with it, I re-upholstered my dad's bench-seat in his toyota pickup for my senior project, and other than that it's not seen a ton of use---I'd say under 150 hrs, and most of that very light use. I don't know a ton about the machine, but it is in excellent working order and was recently serviced. There is a crack in the plastic belt-drive cover, but other than that it is in excellent cosmetic shape. My mom mentioned that they paid extra for the variable speed and to make sure that feature is noted. This machine is located in Lake Tahoe, California. My dad is currently in no shape from chemo-therapy to deal shipping this item, so it is local pickup for now. BUT: if there is no local interest, I will likely transport it down to Pasadena, CA where I can either sell it there or arrange for shipping myself. Asking $1600 PM me for more high-res photos Thanks!
  7. Hi Guys, Need some help. I am making a ostrich handbag for a customer but when I sew the leather it is dropping several stitches in a row. From 24 stitches only 7 was not dropped. When I change the leather to chrome tanned or veg tanned - no stitches are dropped. The ostrich leather is very soft and somewhat fuzzy. Could you help me understand why stitches are dropped. I use a Typical (GC2603) Cylinder bed walking foot sewing machine, DPx135 x 17 (18/110) needle with M39 polyester thread. Look forward to your help.
  8. How's it goin' everyone! I'm a newbie here and just recently found this sight a couple weeks ago. I've always wanted to get into leather craft a few years back and just recently bought me some stamps! I'm mainly looking to make belts, knife sheaths and the occasional wallet. When it comes to sewing machines I am lost! What type of sewing machine do I need for these types of projects? anything that I can buy at the store and readily available? Or do the older/vintage machines do better for these types of projects? Any info is greatly appreciated!
  9. Hello, can somebody identify that sewing machine? It looks quite cool and heavy duty but I can't find any information about the producer. Thank you for your help. Regards
  10. I have the opportunity to purchase a Singer 153W101 at a decent price. I found a copy of a manual for this series of machines, but have not been able to find out much information with searching about this machine. Does anyone have knowledge or experience of this machine and what it is capable of doing? I would be using it to do handbags, totes, backpacks, etc. I would also like to use it for shaving kits made with 8-9 oz leather for the sides and bottom (skived) and chap leather.
  11. I have the opportunity to purchase a Singer 138W101 at a decent price.
  12. Anyone out there using this machines for leather work? I know this are not meant for it but there are hundreds of reviews drying it does work. Now I'm sure the motor will not sustain a production environment but I'm thinking it could work for some 3-4oz straight stitch? Thoughts?
  13. Hi I have a Singer 196K205 that seems to be running well, albeit needs a new table and motor. I have failed miserably to date it as the 'EY' serial numbers on the many lists seem to stop sometime prior to mine. Can anyone suggest a date for the machine or the whereabouts of the list that takes 'EY' numbers as high as mine? Also, you can see how tired it is, would it be worth painting, but thereby losing the transfers? Are there any 196K205 specific users manuals other than the parts list, or can I use a 96K manual, and what is the difference. Thank you all Harry
  14. Hello ever one I have just recently bought a few singer 29k71, 72, 60,62, 51, 70, and in my search of numbers, manuals, dates and also history I have not found anything on why there are some of the machines that are Grayish blue in color???? Does anyone know a reason or is it that singer just want to change the color that year/model! I have one 29k71 that is grayish blue with a SN# EX644466 it has a tag on it that shows 29k71 but when I look it up on singer it shows it is a 132k??? don't know why???? I have a opportunity to purchase one of the same color but it is a 29k73 long arm small bobbin. Are these color machines anything special or just a color change? Thank you Crfiremech
  15. Hay guys, Anyone have experience with the cobra class 4 sewing machine? I am having trouble keeping my stitching even top and bottom from the edge. (top perfect, bottom to close to the edge or comes out the side of the edge) I'm using a left presser foot and the regular plate with feed dog. My thread is 277 top and 207 bottom - bonded nylon. I'm going through 2 layers of 8oz. leather. my stitch line is 3/16" from the edge. I also use the platform that mounts to the table stand so I can have a flat surface for my work to rest so I don't have to juggle the work and guide:) I see people using their machines on youtube to make beautiful stitches, and i would love to know how to do it also. Any advice would help, not many vids out there that show different ways for setup. I love projects that have the stitch line closer to the edges, it makes the work cleaner looking. Thank you for your time
  16. I recently moved my Artisan Toro 4000 to a small stand, as we moved into a much smaller house, and am selling the original heavy-duty pedestal stand it came on. Please see attached pictures, including one of the original setup with the head, motor, speed reducer, light, and thread stand in place. The second picture shows the bare stand as I’m selling it (machines etc. on the floor not included). The stand is height-adjustable, on casters, and made of very heavy steel. 2 pedals - one for the motor, the other for the foot lift. The top is drilled for the Artisan Toro 4000, which is a Juki 441 clone. $75 (which is a bargain). Pick-up only. I’m in the Jacksonville, FL area.
  17. I did a search and didn't find anything on this machine. I have someone fairly close to me selling this machine for $600. She's shown pictures of the machine and of the stitching. I'm really new to this, so I was wondering if anyone could give me a pricing guide. Unfortunately getting information out of her seems to be like pulling teeth. I asked her if she's ever sewn on leather. No response. I asked her if it was manual or motorized, no response. I don't want to buy something that isn't worth the money she's asking. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  18. After months of reading hundreds of forum topics and opinion articles, I'm finally breaking down and just asking outright. I'm looking for the "perfect" machine to be able to handle the types of handbags I make. At the moment, I do most of my construction with rivets and a non-walking foot Juki (terrible, I know) to skirt around forking out so much money for a proper machine, but the time has come. About my bags: I work primarily with 3-4 and 5-6 oz chrome and veg tanned leather. My current bag designs are simple and primarily rivet based (photos below), but I'm expanding to a line of bucket bags and backpacks that my poor tired flatbed has simply refused to sew. I would have to make drastic adjustments to the pattern that will chop up my minimalist design. A few months ago, I sold my cylinder arm Juki LS-321 (needle fed) because, aside from the needle feed mechanism not liking my seam overlaps, for the life of me - I could not get the thing to stitch straight unless I stitched as slowly as possible and held the leather tight from both the front and back. I have 6 years of rather intensive sewing experience on a flatbed, and tried to work with the LS-321 beast for a year so I don't think it was a learning curve issue, but I might be wrong. Now, my question is this: Is it possible to stitch handbags with a flatbed, or is it best to get a cylinder arm and a good flatbed platform for it? Further, what make and model do you recommend that is between $1-2k (preferably on the lower end) and has a good resource base of attachments that make production easier? I know this question has been asked a thousand times, but all of the topics I've read have had some caveat or compared craigslist ads they had found.
  19. I have an amazing Juki LU-563 walking foot sewing machine for sale. Heavy and solid cast body, made in Japan. The entire machine was overhauled by Sloan Machinery in New Hampshire about 3 years ago. They replaced the internal parts that had any signs of minor wear, installed a Sew Green Servo Motor, and changed the drive belt. They also mounted it on a good sized, very sturdy table. Mounted beside the machine is an automatic bobbin winder that runs while you sew (it’ll fill a full bobbin before you’ve used half of the one in the machine). You can also wind bobbins when you’re not sewing. The machine has been meticulously maintained and is in excellent condition. It’s always been used and stored in the climate controlled portion of the house. Every time I use it I oil all oil points with the included sewing machine oil (all oil points are marked so you’ll never forget). The Juki LU-563 is a workhorse of a machine. I used it to make leather bags and accessories, sewing up to 3 layers of 4oz leather with ease. I bought it for $1500 and am including a bit over $100 worth of thread, needles and spare bobbins. They run for about $1500 on eBay in similar condition so I’m asking for $1300 cash. I won’t ship, but I’ll gladly meet you around the Hartford, CT area. Please let me know if you have questions or would like more pictures - I can send as many as you'd like! 24. So I am almost in the market for a good leather sewing machine. I have read hours of posts from all of you wonderful people! I may be more lost now than I was. Any help would be great help. Here is what I need to do and maybe someone could tell me what I need to look for in a machine. 1) Relatively easy to use 2) Sew about 1/2" - 3/4" of leather occasionally but mostly 1/4" 3) Table big enough to unroll chaps or leather vests while sewing 4) Walking foot that actually works like a walking foot. 5) $1500 - $1800 or less preferred budget OK That is it. Is there an option for me????? For now I am struggling with hand stitching EVERYTHING. A 20 minute holster takes 3 1/2 hours to stitch which makes it not cost effective to sell anything. I do it though because I love it. My Jenome costume machine sews through pig and the likes but that's about it. I have been looking really hard at the Cobra Class 17 and the Highlead GC20618. I also really like the Cobra Class 4, I think but it is a little above budget and may put me back a couple of months or more. What do y'all think? Am I on the right track? Thanks everyone in advance for any input you may have!
