  1. I've been messing with leather for a year or so as I have time. This is maybe my best piece. I still get my stiching holes crooked on the blind side. Anyone have ideas how to not do that? Any criticism is welcome.
  2. I made one with a simple snap and then tried one with a Concho/Snap combo. I didn't know what to do so I created a leather "Washer" to fill the long shank space. I also made the mistake of positioning the Strap across the back instead of the front.
  3. Recently made this for a family member. No patterns available, so had to come up with this on my own. There's some flaws, but over all I'm ok with it for a first try. Open to comments. Thanks
  4. Here is a little something I was working on recently... a sheath for my survival knife
  5. Hi everyone! i ve been working wth leather and been a member of this forum for a while now but i never really shared any of my projects until now. i have recently designed a mini fat bowie for myself named "The Monster Cleaver" and got it done through ABS J.S. Doug Campbell. After getting the knife done i have decided to make a unique and one of a kind sheath and way to carry it, so i ve started my designing process and came with what i thought was a unique design. Anyways i wanted to share the finish product with you and get your opinions and any questions you might have about the sheath or the knife. Thanks for checking out my work and topic, i hope you like what your see, thanks again and enjoy.
  6. Well after posting a couple of crappy wallets I made it took the advice of a few people and made this little knife sheaths. I still have a long way to go but I can tell a difference with saddle stitching and better leather.
  7. G'day all, I wanted to share my first attempt at a knife sheath with you all. It was also my first commission job, so that was pretty cool! The knife was one that the clients brother had owned, so it had some sentimental value. I hope you like it! Please provide any feedback you can too, both the good and the bad!
  8. Lately I've been trying to work on my stitching. Considering I just received a new English Paring knife, I figured I would make a small little sheath for it. I should have designed it differently but it was a good chance to practice my stitching. Thank you to Nigel Armitage (@Dangerous Beans) for his videos on saddle stitching! Slowly but surely, I'm getting better!
  9. Made my first bushcraft style sheath for my self made knife. I have made couple skandinavian style sheaths before. I did shoot video about making it. https://youtu.be/IqS2WJbOYbo
  10. I was wondering where everyone got their blue guns from? Ive looked around and seen them for around $50. Is that a fair price?
  11. Here's my latest little project-- this makes it pretty nice to carry that half pound brick of a multitool. Plus, I can't resist making a sheath or holster for every knife and gun I own (probably like many of you)! Cheers! Tanner
  12. I have rustic forged chopper I made ( no pics right now) and wanted to do something freehand to kinda match. I know this isn't pretty, just looking for tips on where I can improve next time, and maybe make some alterations before I stain. I also understand tooling is difficult at this stage, but I kinda want to add a moon and clouds upper left but don't know how. Thanks Chris
  13. Hello all, I am new to this community, I was given my grandfather's tools for working leather a few years ago. I played and practiced with all the tools. I was asked if I could make a pair of knife sheaths for my mechanic and his father in-law. I said sure. He had no patterns in mind so I went with what he hunted. Deer and Duck. His father in-law did not hunt duck so I stuck with a buck. The buck did not come out the way I wanted it to.. all but the Letters and leaves are traced and free hand done.
  14. Just a little project for myself to use up some cheap-o 6/7 oz veg tan I've had lying around; #12 rivets & burrs, .8 mm tiger thread, solid brass ligne 24 snaps from Rome Fastener. This was my first project using copper rivets and burrs, and there was definitely a little learning curve on that. I'm pretty pleased with how it came out and next time I use copper the results should be better. It takes a bit to get the angle of the setter right so you don't mar the leather around the burr. It also takes a little practice to trim the post to a good length. Too long and you have way too much metal to peen over, too short and there's not enough of a mushroom to hold securely. I like quick projects like this to learn a new approach, no stress on how it turns out. But I think my hatchet looks kinda classy now!
  15. Here is my first attempt at a fixed-blade sheath, for my father-in-law's hunting knife. The sharp point had poked through his original Buck sheath, so I thought one with a full welt ought to hold up better. I don't normally drill my stitching holes, but needed to in this case as it was about 5/8" thick. Any tips on keeping the back side holes straight when drilling through this much leather? There is a reason I didn't include a photo of the back! Thanks, Tanner
  16. FINALLY got this present finished, but I messed it up so much that I told my guy that I'll make him a better one based off the same pattern and color. (turns out he wants a stag and owl on it anyway) I probably went about making this thing ass-backwards, but in the end it turned out alright. In any case, it holds the knife tight and looks a hell of a lot more harmonious with it than the cheapo nylon sheath that came with it. I underestimated how close I had made the knotwork to the edge, and just how much tooling it would expand the leather so I ended up stitching over the very tip of the knotwork at the bottom. I'm not so pleased with how the tooling itself came out, either, but I'm still progressing with it.
  17. I'm not having good luck using the search engine, and I'm sure the answer I want is in the Forum somewhere. I make mostly knife sheaths, and I like a sewn on belt loop. Keeps metal away from the blade. The knifemaker just sold something to a guy who has a disability that prevents him wearing a belt. He's asked for a sheath with a metal clip. Since I don't like them, I've never done one. Is the answer to line the sheath? Which would mean two thinner layers of leather? And is there a way to attach them firmly to the sheath? The ones we have here look like the slide through a slot. What I'm thinking of is to cut two pieces of thinner leather than I'd usually use for a sheath, one for the lining; put the clip through the outside layer only; then contact cement both pieces together and go on stitching up the sides. The knife is a punch dagger, which will need a strap and Sam Brown stud (I don't like them either -- metal inside the sheath where it touches the knife blade). So I'd put that through the outer leather and secure it too, before lining. If I'm messing up here, I'd like to know. I've seen someone with a belt clip that isn't metal and seems to be attached to the sheah with a non-metal rivet. I've asked him about what he's using, but I bet you guys are faster. Thanks in advance, and happy New Year!
  18. I've been browsing the forum (and am fairly new to the forum) for techniques that people like to use in finishing the inside (raw leather) of their sheaths. I have tried the paraffin/beeswax concoction in dipping a sheath to seal it all over(haven't tried applying only to the inner w/ a dauber) - but didn't like the shiny finish I've tried trag gum - but have ended up with some hairy spots that refuse to go away & Lately I've been using Ballistol, as recommended by Rowe's Leather, whom has made some nice sheaths for myself and my father in the past - but it turns my saddle tan to a dark brown from inside out! I want to get a smooth finish on these sheaths, and can't decide whether I will go un-dyed or raw, pending my next attempt at finishing the inside. What do you guys use? And I apologize if this thread already exists - If so, please link me! Look forward to hearing what you guys have to say!
  19. Finished up a knife sheath today. This is for a beautiful custom knife that my Niece's husband had made by Jonathan of DogHouse Forge, from an old farrier's rasp. The handle of the knife is wood from a black cherry tree off their farm. The sheath is made from Herman Oaks veg tan leather and dyed with oxblood and mahogany colored dye. It can be worn directly on a belt or as a dangler. It holds a firestarter on the side and the pouch holds a small sharpening stone.
  20. I really like friction/tension hold sheaths and I am working on one right now (a horizontal draw) when a question popped in my head: can I dye the leather first (I like oil dyes) while the pieces are apart, then wet form the sheath around the knife after that? For the knife sheath I'm working on now I wet formed it first then dyed it but I was just curious if I could go the other way around. A second question issue came up with this project, it is a small knife with a finger guard. I have the sheath going up like a quarter of the handle and as I was wet forming the sheath the leather dried and the opening shrank a little. I could pull it out just fine but when I would go to put it back in I was mashing the leather. I cut a hole along the top a little to make it so I could put the knife back in without mashing the leather. The question is: when I am wet forming a sheath how do I accommodate the finger guard but still maintain the tension/friction necessary to hold in the blade? Third question: how large do I need to make the welt? The welt I have on this one is about 1/4 inch but the blade moves around a lot in the sheath. Do I need to cut the welt in the shape of the blade? Thank you!
  21. Here is a picture of the leather I am going to use to try my hand at wet forming a knife sheath. The question I have though is about the welt. I tried to show the welt I have already cut but then I'm not sure about the length. Will this welt be sufficient or do I need to take the welt all the way up to the top of the sheath. My understanding of a welt is to protect the stitches from the blade, so will this length be sufficient? Thanks!
  22. I'm pretty new to leather-working. So far I've made a holster for a mini-maglight, a couple of wrist bands for my daughters, and one other sheath. This is my latest attempt; a sheath for my BK-2. I thought it came out pretty well. Working on making a new camp knife now. If it comes out okay I plan to do a video of both the making of the knife and the making of a new sheath for it on my blog, selfsufficientpath.com. Hope you like it:
  23. First time posting in this forum. Any constructive criticism is welcomed. Thanks!
