I have already posted this piece on the "critique" part of the forums, but then I noticed there was one especially for Sheridan work, so I thought I would put it here too. Folks on the "critique" board have already advised me that my leather was too wet when I was carving it. This is the one major thing I'm going to have to watch out for on my next one. Since people on this board specialize in Sheridan style though, I must know if there are any additional Sheridan-specific tips for when I try this again. Are there any must-have blades, stamps, or other tools I should know about? I have most of the Al Stohlman books but only a VERY basic beginner collection of tools. I feel that my carving looks very blocky and clumsy. Aside from just practicing, maybe there is something I'm doing that's just totally wrong (besides the leather being too wet)?

For Sale - My collection of floral patterns that I designed for my saddles. They are all original custom designed, based on the Sheridan style, but with some unique flowers and leaves. The patterns are pencil on mylar drafting film, which is heavier than the flimsy stuff that Tandy sells and takes the pencil lead much better. So, it's perfect for transferring to wet leather and can be erased and re-drawn to fit a particular part. There are full carve patterns for the seat, fenders, cantle, rigging and skirts, as well as some spot florals. Most have left and right design as well as the transition design from left to right for the seat. Most were made for round skirts and jocks, but one is for a more square skirt and jocks. Price: The entire bunch for $45 plus shipping. PM or email if interested.

Hi folks. This is my first attempt at sheridan carving. I had a little problem with water spots, had to 'deglaze' and restain so that's still a bit apparent. But otherwise I feel it came out reasonably well. Please feel free to give the good, bad, and ugly. Thanks. -

Hey everyone Im having "artist block" if that's a thing haha. I am in the U.S. Navy and I'm leaving for basic training in January. Before I go I want to tool a journal to take with me to my A-school. I'm thinking of doing a small 3 ring binder set up with the hardware attached to the spine. I chose this set up so that it can be multipurpose (journal, workout log, day planner...) I know I would like to incorporate the anchor but I'm not sure where to go from there. I thought about a Sheridan style but I think I want this a little more origional, but at the same time I want the "D@MN" factor! Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thank you and HOOYAH!

So I got it in my head a couple weeks ago that I want to "master" western floral / Sheridan style. Here's my first real attempt at an original pattern for a woman's headband. Critiquing is welcome. I have already noticed some areas I can redo. The red is just to help separate background from foreground. Drawn first in my sketchbook, then doubled and reversed on tracing paper to make the final pattern.

Hi all, been lurking on the forum for some time dreaming of learning to carve leather and finally joined. Bought a basic tool set and am just waiting on some leather to start tooling! While I am waiting I decided to start drawing some Sheridan stuff, I absolutely love it and it is a large part of the reason I want to start tooling leather, so I really want to learn the mechanics of it. This is my very first attempt at it, I know it's pretty rough but I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. I can pick out a few things I'm not totally happy with but I would love some input from some more experienced eyes! Thanks

Hi Folks! I am an American Leather Crafter living in Australia and have been asked to make a sheridan 1 1/2" belt incorporating dice and palying cards in the design....does ANYBODY have or know where I might find playing card artwork for this belt. I am making a duffle bag and would like to have the ends done completely in SHeridan style. the bag is going to be 12" tall X 14" wide X 23" long...... HOwever, I have not quite figured out the technique to laying out my own patters. And, yes, I do have the Sheridan Style Carving book, which is a lot of help with some really great information. SO, if you'd like to help me out, let me know. Thanks ahead of time! -
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on which Barry King tools would make a nice starting set for Sheridan tooling. On his website the recommended size lists more than I can comfortably afford at the moment. I've already ordered a BK 16 Oz Round Maul and a BK 1/2 x 3/8 straight blade swivel knife, as well as a few other tools elsewhere. So now it looks like I should focus on (please correct me if I'm wrong) a beveler, pear shader, camouflage, veiner, seeder, and a background tool. Which sizes would be ideal?

A couple pics of two of my practice pannels. Its just cheap 3/4 oz. leather scrap so the impressions aren't going to be all that deep. But it is a start. Some of the leaves turned out ok but other than that I feel like its pretty aweful. I'm looking for some basic sheridan/floral patterns to practice with if anyone would like to share. Bryan

I have been looking for some new Sheridan patterns. I have a pack of Chan Greer patterns, but I'm looking for something new. I don't draw well, or fast. so I'm in the market for some patterns. I've seen some from China, and Japan. They are a little more than I want to spend. so I thought I'd pick your brains. I'll bet some one knows where I might look for others.Thanks Rob
