    Splitting?

I don't see anybody doing this, at least not here on LW. Is there just not enough demand? People figure that leather is usually bought the thickness desired? I'd buy a splitter, but simply can't find anything reliable. WAY tired of spending money on tools, only to find that I have to sharpen, tune, or adjust it BEFORE I can use it. (Seriously, when did anyone buy a NEW car and get told it will run well once it's tuned up?!@#!!!). I don't have need of this consistently anyway. Just noticing that splitting isn't in the "services" list -- and I might take advantage of that were it available.
  6. Hi All, Wondering if anyone knows if parts for a Nippy NP-1(?) bell knife skiver are available in Australia anywhere? I have a mostly complete unit rescued from the tip as a TAFE college shut down. The skiver is missing a small drive shaft that turns the stone inside the bell knife. It's a shame not to be able to use it just because of one little part....... Last I looked the Nippy site in Japan was pretty hard to navigate or understand, hence asking for someone that speaks Aussie(or even tolerable english) and hopefully can tell their billabongs and bunyips apart. Thanks!
  7. I am closing down my leather business and have a Cobra Class 4 leather splitter for sale. It comes complete with stand and motor. The stand has locking casters. It will split heavy leather up to almost 14" wide. It works best on big pieces if you take it down in increments, making several passes. The blade is in good shape. It has no nicks or rust. Could probably do with a bit of stropping to bring the edge back to its best cutting condition. But, as is, it works quite well. I bought this new 3 years ago and it has served me well. It is quite heavy, so local pick-up will be required. It is located in Floresville, Texas. Price is $1900. Contact me at bcl@ziplinkmail.com
  8. Howdy friends, So I'm in the market for a bench type splitter to skive down my belt ends. I'd like a high quality machine, and I'm willing to pay for one. I would buy a Campbell Randall Keystone new, but they are apparently moving locations and cannot sell any splitters for a few months until they are caught up with their current backorders. So the only real requirement that I have is that the splitter has to be in good working condition which would include the ability to split right out of the box, and that the split depth can be adjusted and locking into a specific setting. Other than that, I'm open to whatever pattern splitters can help me work my strap goods. I'm most familiar with the model 84 pattern, but I hear that chase pattern splitters can also fulfill my needs. I can pay via credit/debit card or PayPal, and I'm located in San Antonio, Texas 78209. Thanks in advance!
  9. This is a Chase Pattern 8" leather splitter manufactured by W.H. Horn. I've never used it but it is complete and appears to function normally. The release leaver has been repaired at some point in it's life but does not affect function. A quick cleanup and blade sharpen and you should be good to go. $250USD plus shipping. Located in Ottawa, Canada
  10. Hello, I'm in the market for a 6" splitter, have been looking at a few Landis splitters but am open to other options. Does anyone here have one that they're looking to get rid of? I'm also looking for a good burnisher motor, and a clicker or hydraulic press. Thank you, Andrew
  11. Tandy just put their older model Pro Splitter (modeled after an Osborne #84) on the Outlet website for $249.99 online sales only and sporting a suggested retail price of $899. They came out with two newer ones. A 4 3/4 inch "High Tech" model and a 6 inch model with the fancy new Craftool Pro black rubber handle. Can anyone attest to improvements in these new models or is the older model a better deal? The older Pro Splitter is an 8 inch and comes with an extra blade. http://www.tandyleatheroutlet.com/p-383-pro-splitter-wextra-blade.aspx The new Procraft Deluxe Splitter https://www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/3795-00.aspx $385 elite price.
  12. 8" Pull Through Splitter With Spare Blade For Sale. $250 shipped to North America I have two pull through splitters and barely use this one. In fact, it's probably only split 25 pieces of leather in its lifetime. This model is a clone of an Osborne 84 and works well. It comes complete with a spare blade that has never been opened and the fitted blade was kept sharp using a simple jig and a lansky sharpening system. The current edge is very clean, polished, and free from nicks or dents. I've also attached a simple collar and pin to the depth adjustment arm to allow more accurate repeated splits. This is attached via friction and can easily be removed is so desired. The paper scale you can see has arbitrary units and is simply a reference scale when splitting multiple pieces of leather to the same thickness. Please see the the images below for more details and don't hesitate to ask any further questions you might have.
  13. I recently bought a splitter off the tandy outlet supply site, req $899 got it for around $250. Every time I got to split leather it carves out the centre of my piece and the outer edges are the thickness i wanted. I have tried in several locations across the 8" blade so I know its flat and not a bent blade. Has anyone had this happen to them, could it be my technique or did I buy a lemmon tool. I have posted some pics of the splitter and what its doing. Thank you for your assistance. James Newbie

    Camoga Splitter

For sale: Camoga SM 4512 splitter 18” or 450 mm wide. Superbly maintained by professionals. Send email, I’ll respond with my phone# and pictures. Bruce@brucevetter.com Homer, IL.
  15. I've got an American Splitter that's surplus to my needs (I have another splitter) so I thought someone else might be able to put it to good use. It could use a nice clean-up and paint but other wise is in good functioning condition. Looking for $550US plus shipping. I'm located in Ottawa Canada.
  16. I've recently acquired two manual skiving / splitting machines. Both are very old but in very good working condition. The blades on both I would like to source spare blades. I would say there is no chance of 'off the shelf' blades. One of them looks about the same size as a woodworking plane blade. The other, which has two holes in it to mount the blade, is a lot squarer but could be similar to a large spoke-shave blade. What I would like is either 1/ blades I can cut down to size 2/ blade stock I can cut to size and sharpen 3/ somewhere in UK that can make me blades to fit The sizes are (width across blade x length x thickness) 1/ 1 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 1/8" 2/ 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 1/8" As these are both old English machines the sizes will all be imperial. Can anyone help? Claire PS I haven't the facilities to retemper or put in a temper of anything.
  17. Hi guys, First post here but I have been reading the wealth of information for a little while now. Over the last few months I have begun my leather work journey, making small leather goods items as a hobby. Last week i purchased a leather splitter from a saddle maker. As i am based in New Zealand, these types of items are very hard to come by. The seller was not able to give me a maker name but after some research I have found it to be an old Whitfield Hodgsons & Brough splitter (attached pictures of the model). I tried splitting some veg tanned leather and found that it in fact was not in working condition. It pulled the leather and barely split it, end result was a twisted piece of mess. I have adjusted the bottom roller so that it is now level, though I am concerned that the blade itself needs a makeover. It doesn't look dead straight and I have no idea what the history of it is. The blade is symmetrically shaped, is there a specific angle that it should be ground at? I saw the blade that is used on the Master tools leather splitter is the same shape, they talk about theirs being hollow ground. Is this something that I would need to make sure is done? I'm assuming that the blade is a main factor in effecting the ability to split, but if any one has any other tips on setting up this machine it'd be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to start using it! Cheers
  18. For sale: My zip is 70446 to calculate shipping Landis Spitter-it works but needs some repair, the adjuster needs the attachment to pull it out and adjust the setting. I used locking pliers to move it. It weighs about 60 lbs and measures 16" tall, 17" wide with the handle attached.Asking $350 American Long Arm cutter: works and is in decent shape. Weighs about 31 lbs and measures 13" tall and 27.5" wide with handle attached. Asking $50 Rivet Setter CIAC is on the side of it: does not have any attachments to set rivets/eyelets. Can ship flat rate for $17.45 and I will throw in the small rivet setter that is not in good shape. Asking $40 Also have a set of Tandy Leather work posters posted in misc. Contact me at joiner2800@bellsouth.net if interested.
  19. For sale: Tandy Leather 8" blade leather splitter/skiver. Adjustable arm, metal twisted handle. Blade recently professionally sharpened. I purchased this new years ago and it has always been in the house. It has sat more than been used, so only needed sharpening this one time. It has years of use left in it. Razor sharp blade that can split leather down to almost paper thin if you slip off the locking mechanism. $265. plus actual shipping from SW PA or pick up for free. I do accept Paypal. Will be packed carefully.
  20. I recently got my hands on an old cast iron leather splitter that was used by a smaller European shoemaking company. It weighs a ton (feels about 200 pounds actually - three men had to carry it). There are no markings, but it's quite possibly over 100 years old. It seems to be hand operated only (no sight of a belt attachment). It is quite dirty, but I'm sure that can be cleaned off well enough. It looks like all the parts are there and working, but I'm not really sure yet. At the moment I am trying to figure out what goes where, how to adjust it, etc. The blade is still razor sharp (slightly concave grind) and HUGE (14" long edge, 1/2" thick, weighs 5 pounds). There is some surface dirt on it, but no major rust whatsoever. There are two rollers (one flat/polished, the other has teeth), and the blade is positioned below between them vertically. I would like to restore it as well as I can, but in order to do so, access to information on a similar machine would be needed for a reference. I'm not really sure I need the machine (as a leather hobbyist, it feels that would be like using a bulldozer in a flower pot), but I do enjoy challenges. Does anybody know anything about this type of a machine? Any info (mechanics, history, value) would be appreciated.

  23. I have a new old stock Osbourne splitter for sale. I bought it thinking I would be using it more and havent. It is brand new, never been mounted, never seen leather and comes in the original box with original blade which is VERY sharp. It sat in a hardware that was closed in the 60s along with their other stock. This is literally brand new. Asking 500$ and would consider some trading with it. Thanks for looking Romey
  24. I've had it for a year now and have only used it 3 or 4 times. It's a Osborne clone I believe. I just don't have the strength to pull the leather through it! I may put it up on Ebay but I thought I'd let my friends here have a chance at it first. If anyone is interested, I am asking $275.00 plus actual shipping. Just send me a message at my Email: blackriverlaser@gmail.com Thank you! Joyce~ It has a wooden handle instead of the cast iron one like in the picture.
