For those of you who own a pull-through splitter do you prefer a micro-bevel on the blade's cutting edge? I just purchased the small Tandy/Craftool splitter and noticed it comes with a very slight/small micro-bevel on the angled side of the blade. Straight out of the box the blade was only okay. After a little polishing of the blade's flat edge using 600 grit wet-dry paper laid on flat glass along with a little stropping it was much better. Most leather samples pulled through with just a little effort on my part. That said . . . would I get a sharper edge and better cut if I removed the blade's top side micro-bevel? As for sharpening the flat side, isn't a piece of plate glass a flat enough surface for the wet-dry paper sharpening/polishing? I've read some posts suggesting the use of a granite "machinist grade" precision surface stone. Is that over-kill? Actually, I'm please with my little splitter. It get's the job done without breaking the bank! Just trying to improve it's performance. Thanks for your time, Lippy

I just bought a refurbished American crank type splitter and it will be here this week. I have never used a splitter before, so I know that I have a learning curve. I have two very basic questions. 1) does the leather insert with the grain up or down? 2) I have a couple hundred of 3 sizes of veg tan folding knife blanks that are too thick and need to split. These blanks are about 16 years old, but are in good shape. The leather is very dry and stiff. Should I split then dry or should I try to condition them first. I have clicked a couple of them down one size and they cut clean on my Lucris clicker press. I have recently made a few knife sheathes with the thinner blanks and they worked fine. moistened the stitch line a little before stitching. -- Tex -- Here is a picture of one of the blanks.

I am looking to buy a new splitter in the next couple months and wondered if anyone of you out there has experience with the Cobra or Artisan 20" powered splitters. I have heard some say they both have issues with sharpening and replacing the blade to get it adjusted properly. Any opinions? thanks,Tom

Has anyone got a leather splitter up for grabs in the UK? Preferably not crafttool unless you only want peanuts for it. Manual over machine and 6 inch or so is fine. Nige

For Sale Hansen String Cutter And Rounder Circa 1987

Hi, all. I have a Hansen string cutter and also a rounder. They are the original style Frank made, and have a base with drilled holes which you then bolt down onto...whatever...I bolted them onto a board and then would clamp the whole unit to a work table. (I see that the new ones have a built-in clamp). It also has the original style of locknuts (not the wingnuts). For me personally, I think the old style is much superior because you can REALLY tighten it down rather than just finger-tighten, but that's just my preference. It was used very gently, on goathide only, for 2 years and then has been carefully stored ever since. It has a lovely patina. (I think!) As you all probably know you can get a new splitter off the Hansen website for $445 including shipping, and the rounder for $235 including shipping, so that's $680 for both. I'll sell my set for $440 including shipping if you live in CA, NV, OR or AZ, and $450 if you live elsewhere. Thanks for your interest. Can Anybody Identify The Maker Of This Bech Splitter?

Does anyone recognize this splitter? Can anyone tell e who made it? Do they make them still? Looks like it may be a one-off made in a machine shop, but made darn well! If I cannot find a maker nor any patent or licensing info on it, I may start having them reproduced. I have a great machinist here in town who can fabricate all the parts and will grind the blades, and one of the best blade makers/swordsmiths in the country is right here in town too(K.C. Lund) and he can do the heat treat on the 01 steel blades. We can even offer pattern welded (Damascus) blades if anyone wants to pay a ridiculous amount for one Let me know if y'all are interested, so I can look into whether or not it will be worthwhile to have these cranked out.
