So I bought a few Tandy patterns and decided to finally get going with a large back quiver. I've already screwed up in that I burnished the edges before dying, whoops. Guess I was too eager to use my new burnisher. I'm posting pics in order, hopefully I'll have the whole thing finished up soon. I designed a celtic-knot style arrowhead, didn't want to go too crazy with complexity but wanted something interesting to go below the pouch. Used a backgrounder around the arrow and along the edges of the quiver, the leather has some flaws in it that I hope will be disguised at least a bit by that. I wanted to try out some more of my stamps though, so I made a "vine" by going back and forth with a thin scallop edge tool and stuck some leaves on each of the joins. Thought it turned out better than it had any right to, really. Then the dying, I almost went with green but figured I'd save that for another day. I like how much the arrow pops out now.

I'm going to be making a little leather harness with dragon's wings for my bearded dragon. Ideally, I'd like to do a little stamping on the wings to give them texture (like, say, Craftool E294) and then wet shape them over a (yet to be made) form to give them a more 3D effect with the webbing being depressed and "ribs" being elevated. I've never done wet shaping before and the tutorials I've looked up online all show smooth leather being shaped and finished. So, my questions are: 1) Can you do both stamping and wet shaping on the same piece? and 2) If so, in what order should you do them? I feel like I should shape first and then stamp because the stamping might get stretched and misshapen if you did it first. Anyone have any input on this?

Ok first time posting and i'm hoping you guys can help. I am trying to put someone's initials and a nickname into a wallet and a bracelet and i'm trying to figure out the best way to do that. I dont really like the font of the stamps out there for leather so i tried doing it on my own. I first wrote on the leather with a pencil and then tried to come back with a swivel knife but the curves in the script were too tight and the knife would just chew up the corners. I've tried following it up with an awl to press it in, didnt work, tried a stylus which worked better but didnt groove the lettering as much as i had wanted...the only thing that has come close is using a pen and softening the leather and just writing it over and over till it presses down somewhat deep enough, my only concern with that is the ink bleeding or fading away. So my question is this, is there a way to carve my lettering into the leather better than what i'm attempting to do? Size of lettering i'm doing is 3/4 to 1 inch lettering...thanks in advance.

Excuse my ignorance in the matter, but can you stamp drum dyed leather? I'm looking at the Herman oak Drum dyed russet saddle skirting. Also how does it cut.? Will the vegetable tan show its softer color after bevel ins the edges? A lot of questions. Sorry. And thanks in advance.

Hi this is my first complete project. Well, kind of complete, because it's a set of 2 and I'm still finishing the other side up. I made these for my buddy's 100th anniversary Fatboy as a Christmas present. He said he wanted a different kind of shape to fit the lines of the bike better. I've custom painted a lot of bikes, but never made bags for any. My dad was a master at tooling leather, so I thought with a little advice from him and my expertise in packaging design, it was possible. Obviously I had no idea on the amount of work involved. My friends wife bought all the leather. I did all the work. That was the deal. They loved the end result and I think it turned out pretty good for a first try. Obviously its not as clean as a lot of work I've seen on here. But I learned a lot from the hours and hours I've spent, reading everybody posts and looking at everybody's work here. So thanks. A Lot. Again, it's my first try at making anything out of leather and I know I made a lot of mistakes, but I learned a lot and I think the next set will be much better.

Ok so they're not even dry, but I got excited and wanted to share. This is a christmas gift (yes I know, running late) and I got the idea for coasters decorated with the card suits. Not perfect, but not too shabby so far! Got the other two symbols car ed, but I'm making myself go to bed before I get carried away. -

I am having a hard time deciding on what hammer to buy. In the past I have used a heavy rubber mallet for my general stamping. The 'bounce' didn't bother me. Since then I've recently been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and the weight of it alone tends to kill my hand pretty quickly. I've tried the yellow polymer hammer and found it extremely light and my scrawny arms didn't provide any help. The rawhide one was somewhat in that same catagory..and since I am trying to buy an entire shops worth of tools, i would rather not be spending that kind of money on a rawhide or maul. The last thing i used was a newer and smaller/lightweight rubber mallet which seemed to work ok...only because the big one was getting old and falling apart lol. This is the last thing on my list I need to open my shop back up (*crosses fingers*). What do you use or recommend? I was planning on just getting a 16oz rubber mallet off ebay...with a steel handle (instead of wooden). I have no idea if the 16oz is the same as what i had before or not. Thanks -

Good day Most of the time when you are stamping the leather, it will stretch. To avoid leather stretching, most methods out there is using a glue to glue the leather to a card board. This is ok but it is messy and taking the leather of the card board will leave marks on the leather. I have learned a better way that does not leave marks and very fast and simple to use and I would like to share it with you all. Use PAINTER tape and tape the back of your leather peace before you start stamping (Tape ALL the back side). I am looking for a small arbor press to use for hot stamping on small items. Most of the leather will be 2-4oz range. I was going to get the 1 ton Harbor Freight unit but reminded myself how I always regret buying cheap tools. I would appreciate it if someone could point me to a good US made 1-2 ton manual press that doesn't cost a fortune.

I am in the process of designing a logo for my leatherwork. I will most likely have three different designs, for the first two, I have figured out that I want to hot stamp, so I will be purchasing through a company that will design them for me, and supply me with the appropriate heating device. But as for the other one, I want it relatively large, about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. How would I go about stamping leather with something that big, and have it be even? What would it be made out of? I really like the results from using heat to stamp leather, so I would prefer that method with this large stamp, if at all possible. Thanks Zayne

This is just FYI... Joann Fabrics sell these stamps from GCD Studios that are supposed to stamp cardboard items(i guess for scrap booking) but they also work for leather. They sell many different fonts and other designs. Joanns has them on sale for 40% off right now. I also found a coupon for an extra 15% of sale items. Each alphabet set runs $45 retail, but they're 40% plus the extra 15% off gets you 55% off..... not a bad deal if you want some new designs to spice up you creative abilities. I purchased two sets, and they seem to work really well. They don't leave as deep of an impression as true leather stamps, but they still do the job. The biggest size I've seen is 1/2"... This is my first post so I hope I am doing this correctly. I have been doing a little leatherwork over the past 18 months or so. Mostly horse tack and items for personal use and for family. I would like to branch out maybe start selling some items to support my habit. Anyway here is a pancake holster I built for my brother-in-law's Taurus PT 140. I tried some new things for me. I have been drilling and stiching but on this one I built myself a stiching pony and used an awl. It is a little rough but it was good practice. Let me know what you think and what I need to improve on.

Boy, when you guys say that you have to use it or you use it, it is the truth. I have been away from this for a couple of months and my carving, tooling and stamping have really suffered. However, the cover is still usable so I thought I would post it. Originally it was made with chrome tanned leather but was too flimsy, so I used that for the insert with a veggie tanned cover. This was my first attempt at double lacing and I really need to figure out how to finish off better. Also my first try with fiebings anique paste.

Hi my friends, I took advantage of purchasing the Tandy craftool press while it was on sale this month. I've been wanting to buy one for years and the price seemed better this month. I made up a quick lasered tool holder that keeps all the dies I bought very handy. I am sure one could be easily be made out of wood or other materials. What do you guys do? I am open for good ideas.
