  1. I tried to call Gomph Hackbarth today and got a recording that he has stepped away for health reasons. Has he stepped away from making tools or selling tools? Has anyone had a recent contact with him?
  2. This is my first post, so here's a little organizer I just made out of a knife block I purchased at the thrift store for 75 cents. I think this is a pretty neat way to sort out your space for an incredibly small amount of money. I had a little bit of chip-out at the bottom due to the low speed of my brace and bit, but now I have an opportunity to add some tooled leather to cover that little mishap! I was also pleased that I was able to utilize a bit of the leather I recently inherited from my grandfather to attach to the sides. I'm just starting out and don't have much room currently, so it is very necessary to maximize the space I do have. Hopefully this was the right thread to share this, thanks for taking a look! -Red
  3. I am making tool holders as well as laser cut templates. Right now I have 2 models of tool racks. a large and a small rack. the small rack holds 60 tools and is 29.00 shipped in the US and the large Rack holds 118 tools and is 49.95 shipped in the US thanks for looking Lewis

  5. looking to upgrade my stamping collection from the craftool stamps. Looking for suggestions or if you have anything you would sale please let me know thank you.
  6. I have been playing with leather and tooling for over a year now and i have decided to start upgrading my tools and collection. Let me know if you have any suggestions or if you have some tools and stamps you would be willing to let go.. Also looking for a new smaller maul. THank you
  7. Hi! I'm a new member who's returning to leathercraft after a thirty-year gap. I have a huge collection of tools from 'way back and, of course, most of them are rusty. I've managed to salvage a lot of them by using fine steel wool, a toothbrush and a soft cloth, but many of my good figure carving stamps are still pretty rusty. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a way of getting the rust off my tools so they might be usable again. I don't suppose there's a way of getting them re-plated once this has been done? I know I can't restore the tools to new condition, but they cost a lot thirty years ago and I doubt I could afford to replace them all at today's prices! Please help if you have any good ideas!
  8. I want to start making fire helmet shields, however, I don't have letter stamps yet. In your opinion, what are some good fonts or sizes for stamps? My goal is the find ones that make the letters look raised. Thanks!
  9. I am seeking advice on selling my leatherwork collection. I attached a list of the books, dvds, stamps, and other items that I hope to sell. Where have you found the best luck in selling your items: this site, Ebay, other sites? Do you recommend grouping items together or selling individually? Any suggestions on getting the best pictures? How do you recommend pricing the items? I'm assuming a few books, like the Home Study Course, are harder to come by but am not sure of it's worth. I was unable to find the record of what I had paid originally. We live 25 miles from town, which only has a post office. We do not have a UPS or FedEx nearby. Any thoughts on how to ship items? Any help, advice, suggestions, comments, or two cents would be appreciated.Thank you. Leatherwork Books and Supplies - Inventory to Sell.doc
  10. Hi everyone. I recently made up some custom key holders for a buddy of mine's truck group. He wanted an exact replica of how they used to make them in the 60s-70s like his. I cut/stamped/carved everything by hand and not gonna lie it was a giant pain in the ass just to do 10. but they did turn out pretty cool. 1st pic is mine on the right and the original 50+ year old one on the left. pretty damn close! Anyways the owner of the shop/group loved them and posted a picture on his instagram of it. Well now he has 100+ people who are dying to buy one. So he wants to order 500 key holders with his logo and info. So obviously I am going to automate the process as much as possible which means I am in need of a custom die and custom stamps! I am just looking for quotes at the moment so I can determine a wholesale price for him or if this is even worth doing. What I need exactly is the attached logo and the 3 text lines in the picture of my hand stamped one. He want to do the shape of the 3 in the 2nd pic so logo and info will need to fit in that rectangle space. He also want the embossed stitching border if possible but I am not sure if that is something that will be worth doing for the price. I am having trouble finding a stamp maker who does more than just make small maker's marks but doesn't charge a crazy amount for a bigger stamp. I do not have a clicker so it would need to be a mallet stamp. Both stamps will probably be in the 1''x 2'' range. Anyone have any experience with getting bigger logos and stuff done in a stamp or know of any contacts? I have the die design ready to go with Texas custom dies but I am not getting anywhere with the stamps and he wants these asap. I am pretty new in leatherworking and may or may not have bitten off more than I can chew. There might be a good reason you cant get these new anywhere...But I really want to try to make this work if possible. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
  11. Hello. I have both vegetable and chrome tanned leather. What is the best way of embossing/de bossing both using the same dies/embosser. I have limited funds so can't afford two seperate machines.

  13. hi guys, for a while i have been looking for a nice set of alphabet stamps for leatherwork. most of the sets i have seen are very huge (3/4" is smallest i have seen) and frankly pretty ugly; the font types are terrible. the other day i came across these stamps on etsy: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/164192944/canterbury-uppercase-alphabet-kit-6-mm they are not designed for leather but rather for stamping some softer metals. just wondering if anyone has tried them on leather before? no doubt they will leave an impression/mark but just want to know if the results were considered 'satisfactory' by someone else who may have tried already. thanks a lot, braden

Need a USPS MO in hand before shipping. No PayPal or personal checks.
  16. Our version of the pear shaders 227 and 228 have a less pronounced hook. You will like the way the curve fits flower leaves and curves. You may have wondered, as I have, why Craftool dropped these so early in their production. I would speculate due to their extra work on that “simple looking" compound curve. material is 1018 steel. Impression approximately 3/16" by 7/16". Available polished or blued. Overall length is 4 1/2". Our Price: $74.99 for set of 2. Please reply to this forum if you're interested. 17. Hello, I have been selling a bit on Etsy and I have not been branding my bags but I really need to start. Where did you buy your maker stamp? Has anyone ever purchased one on etsy from one of the sellers on there? Some of them are pretty affordable about $35-50. I have been thinking of buying one from one of them I am just not sure if the quality will be great since the price is so low. Also, when applying your stamp I know that leather needs to be wet in order for it to take it, do you just moisten the are where the stamp is gonna go? Does that stain the leather at all? I am taking a beginners carving and tooling class and I am always told that when I wet a piece of leather I should always wet the entire piece so that it does not leave any stains in certain areas.
  18. Hey everyone, I'm new to the site and pretty new to leatherworking. So far I have tried my hand mostly on sheaths and holsters with some success. I am currently in the process of making a "fancy" blood tracking collar for one of my tracking dogs and hope to make a few belts as well. I haven't done a lot of intricate carving or stamping yet, but have been playing around with basketweaves and the like. I found a pattern that I really like for the collar, but am not sure what type of stamp it is or where I might find one. I have a Tandy leather and the Springfield Leather Factory about an hour away. Also, I am having only marginal success beveling with a beveling tool. I think the one I have is too large and I can't seem to get a clean cut border like shown below. Are there other ways of making a nice straight bevel such as using a push beveler or a beveler attatchment on a swivel knife? I have attached a couple of photos below. I think both are the same stamp, but one has some additional stamping with a dimpler type of stamp. Thanks for the advice.
  19. Hello all! I am completely new to working with leather. I am getting my supplies in order for my first project: a passport holder for a friend of mine. I have it pretty planned out in my head and it seems like it will be pretty simple to do. I did want to ask you all a question about engraving on the inside. The inside lining and pockets are going to be with this leather, which is going to be lightweight. I'm not sure stamping letters will show up. I had the leather shipped to me, so I'll be able to test out a scrap soon, but in the mean time, I was wondering if I should figure out how to add color to letter stamps (silver on black, I'm thinking). Has anyone done that? Do you just get contrasting paint or marker and fill in the letters once you stamp them? This picture gives an idea of what I would like it to look like. Any advice you might have is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for your help! I'm excited to post my first project! EDIT: I believe I found my answer, in case any other beginners are looking at how to do this. It's called hot foil stamping. There's another thread with info about it here. I still might try stamping and painting the letters on a scrap and see how it goes.
  20. I came across a batch of old rusty leather working tools (various stamps, edgers, etc. - 26 pieces in total). I have two main issues on which I would appreciate some of your ideas: 1. identifying the intended use of particular tools 2. getting them back to performance Looks like a belt end punch with a slot ... but is closed at the back, so it is something else, I guess ... Looks like an edge beveler ... but the grooves are upside down, and there is no groove in the front - it ends with a point Looks like a round stylus of sorts ... but way oversized (the grid is 1cm x 1cm, or about 3/4"), so maybe for stamping ball imprints? And this is a batch of what looks like stamps, punchers or cutters. Leaf and flower designs, oversized again. Were they used for cutting out patterns, or for stamping their shape? Has anybody seen something like this before, and knows for what products/style they were used? There are other tools as well, but I did not include them here because they kind of make sense to me already, and there is a limit on total files upload size. The second issue is more practical ... how to restore them? Rust is heavy. I was thinking of using distilled vinegar, and afterwards oiling and scrubbing them with steel wool. Sharpening would probably be done by using sandpaper on a stick. Any experience?

  24. Prefer the whole thing sold together but can peice if shipping is covered by buyer. My last estimation of the total cost of my kit was close to $1500 to $2000 I have stamps, new older and some no longer made, multipule swivel knives, rawhide mallets, rotary and stitching punches, edgers, wood strap cutter with replacement blades, stiching hourse, manuals and the like. the majority of the tools are kept in an old style machineist's tool box. Will be providing pictures of what I have in the next few days. Feel free to ask questions in the mean time.
  25. Rounding the last corner on my way out of the antique store to go home what do I find..... 48 stamps most without the letter designation ex: 104 vs A104 15 swivel knife blades. Mostly angled And 2 swivel knives with blades The guy said that he has more tools from an estate sale that he hasn't had time to clean up yet but I gave him my contact info and he said that he would e-mail me some pics of any of the other leather "looking" tools that he comes across.
