I need to make a lightweight strap for a small bag, and im not in love with having a raw side exposed. How is a strap like this done? It looks like its finished on both sides but no stitching. I don't know if I would want to rely on glue for such an important component.. Either way I was thinking of using either 2 layers of lightweight essex (2-3 oz) or one layer of a 4.5 oz essex. I am a beginner so sorry if this is a silly question. -
I'm looking for 3/4 inch wide strips of veg-tan leather at 8/9 oz thick for dog leads. Basically, I need them the length of a side. I would definitely be interested in buying a side of my own, but my client may not be able to buy as many as I would need her to buy in order to make buying a side worth it. I've worked at a Tandy, and they don't have anything longer than 72 inches, and that just won't work. Are there any other suppliers that you folks know of that would sell me side-length strips that aren't crazy expensive? I don't care if they aren't trimmed down to a standard length or not. I figured I need the strip to be about 80+ inches. I would also love it if this were a constant supplier with constant pricing.

Version 3 of my original. I've improved the way the strap loop slides. I'm also really happy with the way the chrome hardware and white stitching compliments the brown leather. A custom version of my bookstrap, made with a longer, wider strap and larger panel in order to accomodate a large art portfolio. A more minimal version. A more modern version I made one night while having beers with a friend. Inspired by the above version. (I grew quite attached to this one. The worst part about making such things is that I want to keep all of them. It has since been sold... I might make another one.) -
Can anyone tell me what this tool is called? I've looked around different online leather tool shops and can't seem to find it. It would be easier if I knew what it was officially called. I like the edge it produces, I just don't know what to call it. Beveler, creaser and "magic edge tool" don't seem to show this tool in any google search. Thanks in advance. Dan

I'd like to invest in a strap cutter, but the only one I can find is the Tandy draw gauge. Which, strikes me as a an incredibly good way to cut my hand on the blade. Then I found this video : If you skip to the 1:45 mark, you can see the worker using a palm held device to cut strips. What is that tool, and where could I get one? I'd like to hear from more experienced posters on the preferred way to cut strips efficiently. Right now I'm using a ruler and it's not entirely consistent.

I have 3 pieces of side leather for sale. First is a Muir McDonald tooling side measuring around 8' long and 15" deep. The belly is a separate cut of long pieces by about 4" each. There are also some scraps. $25. plus shipping Next is a Tandy or Hermann Oak (cannot remember!) tooling side which is also about 8' long and 19" deep. This is smooth and lighter natural than the Muir hide. $25. plus shipping Last is a John Whites England bridle butt in Newmarket. It is about 70" long and 17" deep. I am new to leatherworking, and I was wondering what oz of leather do you usually use for your every day standard belt? I think the couple of belts I have made were from 6 oz leather. Is that too thin? I'll also probably be making some womens belts (the skinny kind), and some dog collars. Would I use the same thickness on all three, or should they be different oz? Or is it really just a matter of preference? Thanks Zayne

So I'm new to leather and my mom got me some spur straps to tool for Christmas. I drew a design and got everything all ready to start tooling and they won't absorb water! It's like they have a finish on them already. I'm really disappointed! Is there any way I could do something so I can tool them? Thanks so much in advance!

I'm almost at the end of the planning stages for kind of backpack/messenger bag with shoulder straps. The straps will be layered around a CC foam strip. Though I haven't decided on the final layer variations, I'll probably end up with 2-4 layers and a final thickness of around 1/8" - 1/4" thickness along the edge. Among the finishing methods, which do you suggest? I've debated on thong lacing, basic saddle soap burnishing, burning and probably some other bad ideas but can't really decide what direction to take. Sturdiness is my primary concern with comfort a close second and appearance in third. If it makes a difference, I'm planning on doing all of the stitching on the rest of the bag with (probably) saddle-stitched artificial sinew. Hi Everyone - So I worked for this company using Horween veg-tanned leather (HF, Essex, Dublin) + I wanted to start exploring leather working on my own time. I purchased a side of Tooling/Carving Leather from WC, since I've read that this type of leather is used a lot for belts/handles and that's what I'm looking to make. When I got the leather, I was surprised by how rigid it is. When you knock on it, it sounds like you're knocking on cardboard. And since I'm new to carving leather, I wanted to ask if this is what its supposed to be like when you get it straight from the tannery?
