hey there, just wondering if anyone here knows of any functional alternatives to suede dye? i'm trying to dye the inside of a small purse from the natural color to black. i've seen some youtube tutorials for using acrylic on faux suede, but will it work on the real stuff? i don't have a leather craft store close to my house, so i'm looking for suggestions that include the kind of stuff you could get at a store like michael's, hobby lobby, or even walmart. i'm a total beginner working on a quick personal project, so the outcome doesn't have to be professionally flawless, just looking for something convenient and cheap! thanks! *i'm considering rit dye, would the bath hurt the leather?

I am starting my leatherworking adventure with a fairly simple piece. However I am having some trouble pin pointing this leather. http://imgur.com/a/tOzC5 In the album above is a picture of the hound from game of thrones. He has armor that is studded leather strips of cowhide (At first I thought it was veg tanned that was just backgrounded but that is actually full grain cowhide atf sides.) Underneathed the leather is rivetted into a different type of leather and I cannot for the life of me pin point what it is. It looks to be suede, however I just think it looks thicker. You will also notice that around the edge of his costume it seems like the leather is folded in, how do I create that effect? A Skiver and some cement? Or should I hand stitch. If you look at the second picture you will notice that it is hand stick on the sides with thread, that is the leather that Im trying to pin point. Its my first post here, please be kind if I am asking a silly question. Thank you. -
This is my wife's first leather project. We could not find info on how to line it, so she chose to do it with pigskin suede. It is nice material, but the dye comes off on skin when you work with it. Does anyone know how we can treat it so it won't rub off on shirts worn underneath? We are considering spraying it with waterproofer for leather shoes. Thanks in advance. Also, going forward, is there a way to actually treat the pigskin suede before it is applied to the project?

What can be used to prime a very soft suede with a paint primer, so I can obtain an un-textured surface before the final coat (metallic paint)? The purpose is to separate the leather from the paint and to keep the characteristics of the paint (metallic) intact. Thank you! Nando -
Hi All, I'm about to work with some sand colored (think light tan, beige etc.) pigskin suede splits and I would like to decorate the edges. That being said my first thought was to brand them with a nice pre-made brand design. Of course, I'm finding that locating such an item is extremely challenging and even non-existent -- not to mention out of budget. Because of the color I'd like to burn/brand a nice crisp black into it - design to be determined, but since it's an edge think Celtic, floral or some other nice continuous design. I also would like the design to be at least an inch wide such that I could put two (or more) together and it would work continuously, as if it's one. I've got a soldering/hot stamp tool and would like to know if this is something that I can even accomplish? What other ways can I get a nice black, "stencil-like" design onto the pigskin? Doing the design itself by hand isn't a great option - I've got alot of edges ). I also doubt stamping would work with some color added to it...but maybe I'm wrong there, having never done it before. I also would prefer the end design to be black as I think it would stand out quite nicely. Though at the very minimum it would have to be a darker brown so it would show up. Any ideas from the more experienced folks? Thank you! Lisa

I very much like older version of Merrell shoes like chameleon series, which in production no more and i thought why not to make them by myself. It was interesting job that i done. Anybody know of a product that will permanently seal or finish (weather/stain-proof) 'milled' veg tanned cowhide leather and still keep it's soft feel? I think it's tumbled and so the top grain might be slightly open, almost like suede or nubuck, but it doesn't really have a nap to it...feels kinda like thick deer or elkskin. Products I've tried; Leather balm w/atom wax, tan coat, saddle lac and resolene, and they all left a waxy or clear-coat type finish. I have not tried Eco-Flo's Block Out Resist Finish yet and that claims to dry to a matte finish. .Anybody had any luck with it? I'm thinking at best I'll hafta resort to a Scotch-guard type product like 4 Seasons or Protect-all...do they still make that?... anyways, those are more of a 'treatment' and not a permanent finish. I'm open to all ideas and suggestions, thanks for taking the time to read this, ~confounded cobbler in Traverse City

Greetings! I am a total newbie and have much to learn!! I am making pouches out of suede for iPads and such and need to make a slew of holes to sew two pieces of suede together. I tried using an awl to punch the holes, but the holes close up as soon as I pierce the suede. I am now using a rotary punch set at the smallest hole, but I find it extremely hard to keep the hole even spaced despite marking the holes with a spacer. In addition, it is quite hard on my hands when I have to punch over 100 or so holes. Is there a better solution? I am attaching a picture of a pouch I did for a kindle. Hey, I know compared to the kind of work you guys do, it looks terrible!!! LOL!
