Hey guys, I've recently purchased a vintage wood and brass swivel knife. I don't know who the maker is... the knife itself is pretty heavy. (pics attached) All I know is it was sold from Texas but I'm not sure that's where it originated. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Hi, I have fairly small female hands. Being fairly new to leatherworking im not sure how big of a difference hand size makes when chosing a swivel knife. I would love to go to a big show and try different knives but that isn't going to happen real soon so I thought I would ask for any input you guys might have. I have been doing leather work for about a year. I have a Barry King swivel knife now. It a 3/8" barrel with a 1/4" angled blade. I do almost exclusively fine carving, dog collars that average 3/4" to 1 1/2" width. I would like to add another swivel knife to my arsenal. I am not sure if it's just more practice i need or if a smaller blade would help with the detail I am trying to achieve. I think I also need to learn how to properly sharpen my blade. I strop it about every 4 or 5 cuts and keep it dry and clean. I have read thru many post about knife recommendations but would love to hear if any one has recommendations for knives for smaller hands. I was looking at the sk-3 knives. I saw that I can get it with a 1/8" angled blade. Is it totally personal preference or would something like that be way too small? Thanks for any input!!!

I made myself a swivel knife I also wrote-up how I did it if anyone else is interested. http://renoirsrants....ade-swivel.html They aren't that expensive, but I find it interesting to make your own tools . TBD: Find/make a proper 'flat' blade. Surface finish on wood - stain/varnish. Also, I'm looking out for one of the aluminium cheap knives - may be a bit sturdier than the plastic one.

Well, I bought my first swivel knife a while ago, stropped the dickens out of it a while later, and finally got around to using it a couple days ago. It was a very educational experience. I played around a bit first, then screwed it into one of Tandy's swivel knife holding border tool jigs. I learned a lot of ways real quick how to not effectively use that jig. I also learned that my hand coordination is still nowhere near where I hoped it would be. I guess the most pressing question I have is why the sides of every cut are such a mess. I can blame everything else on myself, but I wouldn't know how to tear up the edges like that even if I wanted to. My best guesses are that it's because 1: I did a simple casing job, satisfactory for stamping, but not so much for cutting, or 2: because three years ago I bought the cheapest cut of leather I could find, and it's been sitting in the chaotic climate of my apartment (that wasn't sarcasm) ever since. I very much suspect this is a familiar sight to most of you. Is one of my reasons right, or is it something else? How is it to be overcome? Or have I just set my knife expectations too high, and this only seems new because I haven't looked closely at other people's cuts?

There is probably already a thread on this but i had no luck searching it. Currently i am transferring my images onto the leather with a modeling stylus the image on top, then Grey/white transfer paper (Depending on the dye or antique) onto cased leather rubbed with a glass burnisher. as you can guess i have had issues with the white not showing up well (in some cases its clear as day) and issues with the gray getting embedded into the leather then i have to dye or antique to cover it up. I was hoping to get a collective on how the rest of you transfer your carving image. I know really experienced toolers freehand with their swivel knife but personally im just not that confident in my skills at this point. Thanks, Murf

I am trying to figure out what tool I saw.... This thing looked like a rotozip or a large dremel, and hung from a pole about 3-4 feet tall. It had a cable attachment that hung down, similar to what the little asian manicure people use when they do fingernail stuff... and the guy could take a regular stamp, like a beveler or shader, and put a collet on it, and snap it into the end of the cable attachment, and when it was running, the tool would vibrate so that instead of hammering, the leatherworker just drug it along the leather.... Any ideas?

I want to order a Barry King swivel knife, but I don't know which one to get. There are different barrel sizes, different blade sizes and angled versus straight blade. Too many options... help! I have medium sized hands for a woman. I have never used a swivel knife, but I am pretty dexterous. (Hand-spinner and weaver for over 20 years.) I plan to work on mostly small to medium sized leather projects (belts, wallets, small cases.) (I don't know what makes the difference for making the choice, so I'm trying to give whatever info that may be pertinent.) Thanks!

I've got a perfectly terrific Chuck Smith Ol' Smoothie (no blade) that's a 5/8" barrel, which is just a bit too wide for my comfort. Looking to trade it for a narrower barrel swivel knife in Henley, LW, or Chuck Smith (anything between 1/4" and 1/2").

My tool collection started out as an inheritance from my Grandfather. I have added to it here and there since, but that is where most of it came from. Amongst this collection were what you'd typically find in an old collection. Lots of punches, lots of leftover things, and all sorts of similar items, but the thing I wanted to share with you guys was the swivel knives he had made back in the early to mid 50's. I never got much detail from him as to exactly when he made them, but judging from the other things I had seen him make, these must have been pretty early in his career as a machinist. They are far from fancy, but they are functional and the simplicity is what I find most interesting. As far as comfort goes, they have their issues. I feel that sharing them might inspire others to maybe do something similar for themselves. Sometimes the tool you make might not be as nice or a well polished as the expensive variety made commercially, but they seem to carry more sentiment because it was something you made. I think that is one of the biggest reasons behind a lot of us enjoying the work done with leather. I hope you all enjoy the show-and-tell and might consider sharing tools that you, or someone close to you, made for whatever the reason might be. Also, I started this one, because I didn't want to hijack anyone else's thread.

I was watching a video and saw a beader blade that actually cut into the leather and not just burnish it. The one I have now the "blades"are rounded so you cut your main lines then run your beader blade one side in your cut line. Your second line is more of a burnished line that looks cut. I would like to at some point in the near future get a 1/8" beader blade that actually cuts the leather on both lines for the borders. Does anyone know if anyone makes one like this? Trying to figure out who made the one I saw in the video.

I have been teaching myself to tool for the past few years in my spare time and have been making some progress recently, however I am struggling with decorative swivel knife cuts! I can't get them to look smooth and flow with the design (see picture). I have used two different blades, the one in the picture is a small angled blade. I always make sure they are sharp and stropped before I used them. Any suggestions on which knife blade to use and techniques that help to make them look professional would be greatly appreciated! I feel like everytime I try to add them I ruin my designs! It is getting very frustrating! Thanks!

So the last 2 months I have been crazy busy and working in a machine shop at a factory. What does a leather worker think about all day???? TOOLS!!! As a sub contractor sometimes it takes time to get to know the big bosses and finally I was trained and able to get into the Lathes they have there. I also learned how to TIG weld stainless while I have been there.... Well tomorrow the job is over for my contract and well.... I just had to stay a few hours the last couple days to make these! Sorry but these are all sold already... And tomorrow is my last day at the factory... BUT.... I am moving back to the USA in 8 weeks and will be setting up my new shop! So I you want one I. Can just add you to my leather list:)

Had to have the guy at the local Tandy help me sharpen my knife properly and he suggested I make a cover for it to protect it. So I got a little bit fancy...
-
Went looking for the size of the set screw that Tandy uses in their swivel knives, wanted to switch from a slotted screw style to an Allen head style to make it easier to adjust. What I found to my surprise is that it is a metric screw, size is 3mm x 4 mm long x 0.5 pitch. Didn't find this info on the web, called a couple of Tandy stores, finally just went to the HW store and started guessing. Besides changing out the screws in the swivel knives, I also replaced the screw in the Keen Edge sharpener with a socket head screw so that I could tighten and loosen the tool by hand. Since the screw is not in the way, no reason to have to use a screwdriver or Allen wrench now unless things get stuck.

I have a Don King Swivel knife with original blade for sale. $300... great condition

Got an email from Tandy today, like happens every Friday, and their new line of tools is now available. Included in the new offerings are their two new swivel knives with either 3/8" or 1/2" barrels. Anyone got to see and touch these in real life yet? Do you think they will be able to compare to the likes of Barry King swivel kinives? Would like to know if they are going to be a suitable upgrade from their basic models. I won't be in a Tandy store for a while, so any early opinions will be appreciated. JJ

Up for your consideration is a Like New SK3 swivel knife. I found that the first SK3 I purchased is all I ever reach for so this guy has been super lonely and I would be willing to be has only seen about 15 minutes use in it's life. This is Leather wranglers photo and since my digi camera batteries were dead I borrowed the photo. I can get photos of the actual knife if anyone insists. This is the 3/8" barrel with the 3/8" flat blade. Large rounded yoke Red color just like the photo. Just like the one on the left. Smaller barrel. Looking for $100 even. Shipping included in the US. Will ship overseas but at an additional cost. Honestly you can't get closer to new than this. And $50 off the new price. Post up here or pm if you are interested or have any questions.
