  1. I was curious if anyone had any input on weights for a laptop bag / briefcase. I have a decent amount of 4/5oz shoulders and double shoulders on hand and a limited amount of 6/7oz usable material. This left me curious about a few different options: Would a 4/5oz 15" laptop back be sturdy enough alone? What if the gussets were semi-hardened? And is it possible to do so without leather stiffener? For instance, would a wet wash be enough? What about a combination of 6/7oz for the gussets and 4/5oz for the front/rear panels? How about doubling up 4/5oz (back-to-back) to make 8/10oz? — sounds thick and like it might require a lot of stitching Anyhow, I'm interested to see the responses as I've been watching YouTube videos and reading these forums for months, but haven't taken on a project this big yet.
  2. I am lacking expertise in leather making and would appreciate your comments. Exhibit A is showing the overall look of the bag. The whole bag is made of ~2 mm thick leather (easy to fold for storage). Shoulder straps are ~4 mm. Exhibit B shows the main problem with the front buckles: (i) they are too thin (~2 mm) and therefore bend (ii) they have no stitching on the edges further compromising the rigidity. It makes the buckle hard push through the loop, as it constantly bends, it also looks ... em "unfinished". Exhibits C and D also show "flaps" of the bag that have no stitching on the sides. Again, in my eyes, this makes the bag feel "unfinished", although I am not sure how functionally justifiable this intuition is. I am considering for asking for corrections to be made and would appreciate an unbiased professional opinion.
  3. Hi, I am newer to leather work and I am wanting to make a butt stock cover with cartridge holders that will attach to the back end of a sling and the sling will go up to a leather fore end. What I was wanting to know is that I was told that veg-tan leather was the best choice and that 6/7 thickness was good for the fore end and the butt stock cover with the cartridge holders, and that 10/11 was good for the sling. Are these good thicknesses for the project I have in mind? Also is the 6/7 a good thickness for engraving? Thanks In Advance
  4. Hey guys so I'm going to try my hand at a holster for my pop. He has a S&W Sigma 40V which is equivalent to a Glock 19. What's a good leather thickness I should use for this? Is there a forum topic on wet forming a leather holster or do you guys have a better way of forming? Any help is greatly appreciated!
  5. I'm currently working on a "new" design for a western saddle pad and am looking for some more input. New is very relatively speaking as there isn't all too much that would be new, but rather addressed differently for the comfort of the horse. What are you guys using for your custom pads? Like, how thick are your pads, materials used, do you prefer shaped ones or rectangular ones, do you have any special considerations in regards of venting, vertebra, withers, shoulders, lumbar area etc. Do you use different or multiple layers? And so on... Just throw everything at me here please as I'm collecting all the information at this stage.
  6. hi all my name is dedi i want to ask you all about gutterman thread does anyone have try buy it? this is the web that i found https://www.guetermann.com/shop/en/view/content/ i dont know they thread size i need in 0,6mm thick i attach a picture the thread that i want thanks dedi
  7. What is the thinnest leather to be tooled?
  8. Hi, Does anyone know where I can get my leather split and reduce the thickness?
  9. Hello all! I have a few questions lined up that may have very basic and straight forward answers but to the novice they are quite confusing! What part of the tanning process makes a finished hide soft and luxurious to touch compared to hard? What part of the tanning process makes the flesh side rough or smooth (like the top side)? What part of the tanning process makes the leather firm or flexible and floppy. I have asked some people in the past but have never had a suitable answer, some have said it depends on the thickness of the leather but some leathers can be very thick and very soft to touch and vice versa with thin leathers, or very thick but still floppy or very thin and very firm. Also, what is the difference between bridle leather and harness leather, and do that both have smooth bottom sides? And does anyone have any suggestions for a waxy feel of shell Cordovan from either Horween or Clayton but from a cowhide rather than just the small horse shells? I am making leather wallets and purses and have found that 1.5-2mm or around 3oz is the perfect thickness for what I want to produce without the wallets becoming too bulky, what recommendations would anyone have for leather having the above mentioned waxy feel but with a bridle type flesh side, to avoid bulking up even more with lining. And if I were to line the wallets is pig skin or goats skin the best option, or is it just down to preference? From reading the posts on this forum I've become accustomed to there being no wrong answer but just many individual preferences. I am based in the UK so as well as this long list of queries if anyone had recommendations for suppliers that would be perfect too! Many thanks in advance! Ross
  10. I am new to leatherworking, and I was wondering what oz of leather do you usually use for your every day standard belt? I think the couple of belts I have made were from 6 oz leather. Is that too thin? I'll also probably be making some womens belts (the skinny kind), and some dog collars. Would I use the same thickness on all three, or should they be different oz? Or is it really just a matter of preference? Thanks Zayne
  11. I made my first wallet today, which is my second finished leather project to date. I designed It myself. I know it is nowhere near perfect, and I have learned a lot in the process, but I still have a few questions: Im pretty sure the reason why the dye on the edge transferred to the other side of the wallet on the inside is because I didnt do a final burnish with some gum trag (second picture). As far as I know that helps the dye from bleeding/transferring. Am I right? The wallet is really thick, probably because I used what I am assuming is around 3 oz leather (I dont have a thickness gauge, I should probably pick one up) It wont stay shut by itself. What oz leather do you think would be best for this style wallet? To finish the wallet, I applied a couple of coats of neatsfoot oil, then topped it off with 50/50 acryllic resolene (only on the outside), and then some obenaufs leather preservative(also only on the outside). However, I didnt do any of this until after I stitched it all together. Is that the recommended process, or should I have done something different? I dont really like the glossy looking finish you can see on the outside (you can see in the third picture). What do you think is giving it that look? I like leather that looks more satin than glossy. I also noticed the color on the backside has a slightly pinkish hue. Is there anyway to remedy that without using dye? I know, I ask a lot of questions. I am a perfectionist, and as you can probably guess, I am pretty frustrated with the outcome of this wallet. Thanks! Zayne
  12. I am trying to make a quiver from a pattern that calls out 8-9 oz. but unfortunately I do not have any leather on hand that is this thick. I know with careful work I can make an edge seam like a single piece but what I haven't been able to figure out is if I glues two pieces together if I can create a piece that has the same stiffness properties the pattern is looking for. Has anyone tried anything like this? I have 4-5 oz. leather on hand that I'm think to try it with but due to the size of the piece I wanted to check before I glued two big chunks of leather together. Thank you for any advice, Drake42
  13. I am planning to get Singer 47W66 and was wondering on its capabilities on sewing leather? Does anybody in this forum have an idea about the max thickness of leather it can handle? Cant find much on the net! thank you
  14. I've been lurking for a while but now comes the time for my first post. I've been commissioned a chefs knife roll and I'm struggling choosing the correct thickness of natural vegetable tanned leather. It needs to be thick enough to withstand pointy tips of knives but also flexible enough to be rolled. I've thought about using 4/5 oz. leather on the backside and a lighter 2/3 oz. leather for the inlay which will be covering the knife handles. Has any member on here tried making knife rolls before and what should I look out for? Regards, Alex
  15. Hi, I got some inquiry and hope that someone can give some advice. Soucing for leather hide is quite difficult where I came from. So my best options, I get my supply mostly from eBay, I get them in small sheets of 1 squre feet. Mainly I'm interested to make wallets, card holders, something like that. So want to ask, what thickness is the best in making them? my handmade bifold wallet currently I'm using is 2mm thick (4~5oz maybe?) I lovin it. currently I've found a supplier that have 2oz belly and 7oz hide (which the price cost+shipping are within my budget). I want my handmade wallets/card holders to last and at the same time not that bulky. if I make the whole wallet in 7oz, would it be too heavy? Or can the leather be mixed outer and inner layer? Advice and recommendations are really appreciated. Best regards
