  1. Hi everyone, My name is Aleks and I am from London. Also Russian speaking Two months ago I decided to start practising in making leather goods. I do not make any big projects until I will be confident in all processes like pattern cutting, stitching and finishing edges. This is my last creature, a trolley coin keyring. Materials: black smooth calfskin, natural colour 18/3 Barbour thread and Fenice grey edge paint. Tools: Pro-Line diamond chisel 6spi (new Amy Rokes irons 8spi already ordered), soldering iron withbrass tip from aliexpress (need to order proper Regad Fileteuse with F2 tip), sand paper 400 grit. A nice slanted stitch using single knot and crease line was made using regular soldering iron. This project was made to test new way of stitching and new edge paint. Fenice is much betterthen Giardini. Almost ready to switch my direction to Leo Degarmo brand. Thank you
  2. Hi guys! got some 0.8mm Ritza 25 "Tiger" thread for sale with free shipping. I got 0.8mm because 1.0mm was just a bit too big for me. I make things like pencil and tool cases/rolls, belts, and small purses/bags with thinner leather so I like my stitches to be small but still have strength and a nice full look, and 0.8mm tiger thread was the perfect size for me. 1.0mm seemed more for bigger items with thicker leather. Anyway, I figured I don't need a full spool, so I thought I'd sell some of the extra for people who want to try it out or need smaller amounts. If they sell, I'll get more. It's really a great thread, my favorite by far. Here's a list of what I've got. 0.8mm - JK 2 Beige - Very slightly Pink on white. 0.8mm - JK 7 Mid Brown - A nice rich Dark-ish Brown. 0.8mm - JK 77 Havanna Cigar - Tobacco Brown, lighter than Mid Brown 0.8mm - JK 79 Colonial (Tan) - Looks yellow in my pictures but is more like yellowish light brown. Coming soon... 0.8mm White JK 1 -out of stock 0.8mm Black JK 23 -out of stock 0.8mm Amber Glow JK 76 -out of stock Pricing: Including free shipping to the US! 20 meters / 65.6 feet = $6.45 40 meters / 131.2 feet = $9.00 60 meters / 196.8 feet = $12.99 80 meters / 262.5 feet = $16.50 1 meter Sample Card of each color thread (4 meters total) = $4.00 Scrap sample card 1 of each color (My leftover pieces of thread that are too short to use, average 2-3 inches long, still good for deciding on color and if the thread is right for you) = $1.40 If you need any other amount or want to request a color just ask! To order some just send me a P.M with how much you want and your email, Or email JEM_Leather@outlook.com. I will create a Paypal invoice which will be sent to your email for payment. Non-US residents can contact me for shipping prices I also just started an Etsy page you can order from too! I will have more items added soon. Paypal is probably the best way to do this so that you know you have buyer protection and stuff. Pictures: Keep in mind these are not exact as my camera doesn't really capture the color perfectly. The picture with the most exact colors are the ones of the sample cards at the bottom. Beige Mid-Brown Havanna Cigar
  3. My first post, great to be here! Much is written already on top notch thread for hand sewing, my question is about machine sewing. I came across some beautiful messenger bags made with Italian veg tanned leather, such as: http://www.travelteq.com/All-Leather-Trash/Leather and http://www.barneys.com/boldrini-selleria-double-handle-briefcase-504088446.html What type of thread are these guys using, you'd say? Nylon, polyester, linen?
  4. Hello All, I couldn't find an option to edit or delete my prior post, so I'm putting another here. In short, I wanted to ensure I was giving a good price on my excess ritza thread, and after a bit of poking around the web tubes I found a few other people giving comparable or slightly better rates. So I added a bunch of length to my original prices to make sure I was giving the most competitive options for ritza. Any way, the rates work out to the following: $3.5 @ 15 yd, or 3 colors @ 15 yds each for $9 $7 for 40 yds $17 for 120 yds https://www.etsy.com/listing/240689473/lowest-price-10mm-ritza-25-tiger-thread?ref=shop_home_active_1 I'm open to anyone's thoughts on this pricing if it seems unreasonable from what other folks might be offering.
  5. Hey folks, I'm selling some thread through my Etsy store, trying to offer shorter lengths at reasonable prices for the folks who only need shorter lengths or to try it out. https://www.etsy.com/listing/240689473/10mm-ritza-25-tiger-thread I'm offering long lengths at good prices too. Here' what I have: $3.5 for 10 yards $9 for any 3 colors @ 10 yards each $7 for 30 yards $17 for 100 yards Shipping is $1 for the first item, .50 cents for additional items. I'm starting with the colors I know I'll use, but I'll add more if it seems there's demand.

  7. hi all my name is dedi i want to ask you all about gutterman thread does anyone have try buy it? this is the web that i found https://www.guetermann.com/shop/en/view/content/ i dont know they thread size i need in 0,6mm thick i attach a picture the thread that i want thanks dedi
  8. Hi All So i have been reading a lot of posts on sewing machines and have purchased a Juki 1508 NH based on the information in this forum. The machine comes with a 190 needle system so my question on needles is which brand and point style to buy. The only clear pictures i can find on needles is a pdf from schmetz that shows the actual needle point and has examples of how the the stitching will look So are schmetz good reiiable needles or should I be looking for something different. When it comes to thread, is there a particular brand that is better than others...and should i be looking at bonded nylon or polyester. I would like something that mimics a hand stitched look similar to tiger thread or lin cable ( if thats possible) the machine will be used mainly for wallets , small accessory items, handbags, veg tan belts and light luggage pieces. Most will incorporate piping or binding on the seams Thanks to all for posting and sharing your ideas ac.
  9. I'm in need of a Needle & Thread size guide for my Cowboy 3200 along with different needle types for material. I need to repair a a couple of heavy duty canvas tarps, but need to find the correct needle size and thread for my application. Thanks in advance.
  10. So before I purchased my stitching irons and hand stitching thread, I searched around for comparisons of the different threads and irons and how they looked side by side. I watched all the Armitage videos, but did not see all the different samples side by side to actually make a comparison. I have seen one or two comparisons of different brands of threads, but nothing that allowed apples to apples and apples to oranges looks. So, I made a card that compared 7 different stitching irons, all around 7 SPI, some 4MM, and using 3 different sizes of linen thread (Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread), and 1 Ritza Tiger thread 0.6mm for comparison. The 0.6mm Ritza and 7SPI seem to be a common combination, and linens are fairly common too, so I thought this would be a good place to start. If someone wants to see a particular combination, with a different type of thread or SPI, let me know and I'll see what I can do. It was interesting to me to see how different the marks were, yet how subtle the differences were in the actual pattern of the stitch. I am not a master stitcher yet, so some of the differences are no doubt due to my inconsistencies, but I think it is somewhat clear which irons do and don't work with which threads. The 132 thread is some pretty heavy stuff, but I enjoyed working with it and really liked how it came out on some of the rows. I still need some practice to get the back of my 532 stitching to be more even, but some of it is passable, I think. I hope this comparison is useful to someone out there. The various irons used on each row, top to bottom: Old Joseph Dixon 7SPI Abbey England EconoStitch 7SPI CS Osborne 609-7 7SPI European Style Stitching Iron from Ebay 4MM Kyoshin Elle 3.5MM Ebay stitching iron 3.85MM (about 7SPI) Ebay Stitching Punch 4MM Thread used from Left to right when viewed from the top of the stitch: Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 532, beige Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 332, beige Campbell's Satin Laid Linen Thread 132, beige Ritza Tiger 0.6MM braided polyester thread, Cream Front side and back side images before tapping down with a hammer, and after. 11. Does anybody know where I can buy/order Linhanyl bonded nylon thread, size 138, in colors other thabn black, white, and brown? Thank You!!! Pepper
  12. Good afternoon, I am adding an SD28 to my toolbox and even though a lot has been written about this and the pedersen machine, I can not find which thread size corresponds with which needle size. the pedersen 308 manual states : use 6 strand twisted linen, waxed on the bobbin, unwaxed on the upper. needle #5 goes with thread #5, #6 with #6 etc. but these notations are from way before I was born and I have no idea which thread diameter goes with which number. Is it as simple as measuring the needle's blade and take the same diameter thread? Thanks in advance, friendly regards vaporlock
  13. After several days of carefully browsing through the countless topics I decided to abuse the good will of the senior members in order to get specific answers/advice to my case. I will be short so I won't waste your time. Looking to move from hand-stitching to machine sewing while keeping the same "look" for new larger items impossible to handstitch. So looking to make women wallets, bags, totes etc. This would be done with heavy jeans cotton, waxed canvas, 1-2mm leather and thick thread. I chose these based on availability in my country: - JACK JK 62682LG - enlarged hook heavy duty cylinder bed, 6mm max stitch, DPx17 #18-24 needle sizes - JACK 550W servo motor with NPS (needle positioning system) - stitching slow and accurate is important to me - will be sewing with 20/3 and 10/3 synthetic thread. I don't know how it translates into the 207/277 sizes - no slanted stitches - I need a straight large stitch, large holes I was thinking of ordering size #18/20 needles for lighter leather/fabrics and #24 for heavier 3-5mm leather. So i ordered some 135-16 system needles with D/TRI point. Please let me know your recommendations if you think I should order different parts or needles. Thank you!
  14. I do alot of work which involves combinations of leather and fabric(waxed heavy canvas mostly). On the fabric i use alot of gutermann polyester topstitch thread, which is heavy and has some great contrasting colors and shine. I can use it to hand stitch fabric and also load it in my machine top and bottom. Love this thread fo fabric thick and thin....The problem is need to be able to match the color of the the thread i use on the leather...There are also times where I machine sew the leather and canvas interface and i saddle stitch the leather bag bottom corners. Has anyone had experience with twisting 3 or 4 strand hand stitching thread from this topstitch thread? I am willing and able to build a thread/rope twister like they use on rope walks, but would like to avoid it if my idea is not sound. I have alot of this thread and the gold thread is gorgeous on english bridle and black canvas...... Then you get to the "accent" saddle stitches on the straps and corners and its just white/brown/or/black ........ Also, on an aside, I have heard you can dye the waxed tiger thread because the wax is so lightly applied. Any input? It would be cool to buy a big old spool of white and dye thread on a per project basis. My partner has alot of schooling in dying fabric but has no idea about the thread. Can get white spools for a good price but 1000m is a lifetime supply of a color i wont use if the dye doesn't work.
  15. What I want to know is which type of thread you would recommend for sewing Mocs, and maybe why? I am sewing them by hand so also what size thread? Have researched these forums and no luck, Linen, Nylon, Polyester? Thanks in advance for all you help and advice. Paul
  16. Hi all - I don't know the applications for when you want to use poly or nylon (or something else.) I just sewed up a leather halter the other day and used poly. Was that right? Also, these chaps will be hair on hide.
  17. Hello there, this is my first post. I did try to find another thread on this topic but was not successful (so forgive me if this question is repeated elsewhere). I've just begun sewing baby moccasins on my home sewing machine (I do hope to upgrade to an industrial one eventually). I'm working with regular cowhide at the moment (still practicing) but plan to upgrade to ecopell veg tanned leather soon. My question is that I'm not sure what thread to use. For my practice moccasins, I've been using regular cotton (#40) thread but i know plain cotton will not last on leather. The leather is around 1 1/2 mm (1/16") but will mostly be sewn double thickness and occasionally triple (at the ends). Most of the advice I've read for home machine sewing indicates #69 polyester thread. I hate to use polyester with a high end leather but I do want to use the correct thread for the application. So should i use #69 polyester? Are there advantages over nylon or rayon? Thank you! Kate.

    Barbours Thread

I have a brand new spool of Barbours #6, white, 918 yards, left twist, still in original box. I would like to trade this for the same thread in a right twist or even #5 in right twist. Surely some of you machine owners could use this and we could work out something, please. I bought this left twist by mistake and would really like to trade or sell it, can't afford to buy another spool and have this one sitting around. Please pm me for any questions or offers. Thanks Paul
  19. While researching how to restore a Claes sewing machine, I came across a number of general comments on thread selection. The most frequent comment was, the thread selection is determined by the material being sewn and the needle size is then determined by the thread and size selected. Being new to sewing, sewing machines and this fine website, may I please ask: what specifically are the major factors to consider when selecting a machine thread for any material and for leather material in particular? I'd like to understand the reasoning that goes in to the choice Thank you, thank you very much.
  20. I am having a hell of a time finding colored thread in 207' 277' or 346. I want red , yellow for sure but would like a place where I can find this stuff. Can anyone help me out. Oh and to be more specific I want bonded nylon( I think, I'm hearing that poly is better. Would love to hear opinions on that.) in one 1 lb or 1/2 lb spools. Another sourcing problem I have is buckle set tips. One of the items I make requires 2 tips but only one buckle and keeper.
  21. What thickness of thread do you use to get the best looks? bonded-nylon-brochure.pdf
  22. I thought it might interest some to see what they work with a little closer. I have a good AO microscope but my camera is cheap ($65 digital) and I hand held it to the microscope eyepiece to get the 2 enlarged pictures so the quality is not the best. The first picture shows chrome tanned that I use as you would see it with your naked eye (almost smooth). The second picture shows waxed poly thread that I use in hand stitching in the microscope. The white is wax on that thread and you can see the individual fibers. The third picture is of the surface of the leather in the microscope. I get much better resolution when look in the microscope with my eyes and also I can increase the power a lot. -- Tex
  23. Is there a well-recommended thread here on the board? I'm interested in Tiger Thread as Ian Atkinson of Leodis Leather recommends it, but I can't find a place to order it in the US. My project is a satchel, and I want at least 1 mm nylon thread, if not polyester for the strength. Thanks!
  24. Ok, so, just a few months ago, November of 2013 to be exact, I bought a brand new, Tippmann Boss sewing machine. Straight out of the box, using a size 200 Needle, with 277 thread, it works perfectly. I purchased the flatbed accessory, the other presser feet, and size 160 needles and 138 thread just a couple weeks ago. Using the new size 160 needle and 138 thread, it no longer makes stitches. I checked the needle alignment - the scarf spot is going where it is supposed to go. I've tried turning it a few degrees either direction, several times. The thread tensions are set up according to instructions. It misses every single stitch. So, I live in central time zone, and I call customer service. They all leave at 3pm my time. I have a full time day job. Kinda tough to talk to someone.... So I email them... 3 days later, I get the response "One thing we can try is taking some pressure off of the take up arm spring. There is a spring in the back of your machine that lifts your take up arm up you can bend this spring out and take some pressure off of it." .... literally, that's it. So, it took 3 days to tell me that I need to bend a spring to fix my problem? That seems like terrible customer service. Since when did we start bending things and breaking precision equipment in order to fix it? At any rate, I tried this method. Didn't fix it. I took the needle plate off, and watched the needle enter the shuttle bay. The little finger that catches the loop of thread on the needle, misses it. It's as if the shuttle doesn't go close enough to the needle. Thoughts?
