There have been a few threads about cutting costs or getting stuff cheap but they were by and for the US cousins so I thought I'd start one for the UK-ers I can't see anywhere else but here to run the thread 1. Granite chopping board. From Home Bargains = £4.99, exactly the same one sold by Argos is £9.99. Size is 40 x 30 x 1.3 cm. It may be thin but I've been stamping on it and it hasn't cracked yet. Certainly good enough for edge skiving if you don't want to chance the stamping on it 2. Next we visit the Poundland shop, so all these items cost.... ?? How much? anyone? Bueller? UHU glue. Look for the solid box. There is one with a window in the box, that tube is far smaller [half the contents afair]. Its a good contact glue, Easy to apply because it is a tube - and in my case you don't waste a load cos the rest of the glue in the tin has solidified. UHU is also available at some Home Bargains for... 99p a tube. Home Bargains sells a Bostick type glue in their own brand name; its good too, at £1 a tube. 3. Stainless steel roasting tin. I use these for dip dyeing. Holds enough dye and easy clean up 4. Compartment storage box, About 20 x 20 x 4cm. Divided up into twelve 5 x 5cm and one 10 x 10cm sections. Many of the partitions are removable making the areas longer [or wider, but not both ways]. Handy for keeping and segregating small things like small rivets, Chicago screws or Sam Browne buttons 5, Black box with lid.This one is just under the size of half of a folding crate. I throw scraps into a number of these, then sort out the stuff that can be used from the real waste. I make board games so any piece from which I can punch a 6mm disc is still good for me 6. Need to see better close up? I wear reading glasses. Available in powers from 1 D to 4 D. I have several in 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 powers for various tasks [not all leather work] They're cheap enough to have several pairs kicking around. My eye specialist [I can't spell her fancy title!] put a pair on one of her machines and she said the lenses were fine; almost as good as the ones she gets for customers. 7. A new style of reading glass on the block. With LED lights, one each side. I'm still checking these out. In low light they help but if you have bright working lights they don't seem to make much difference. These cost me £1.09 from China via ebay 8. Back home - to Home Bargains actually. A medium sized clear storage box, £1.69. I keep things that I use more frequently in these as I can see the contents better 9. At many discount stores; small spring clamps, usually about £1 to £1.50 for six or eight. Their jaws will mark leather so I use lolly sticks between the jaws and the leather, both sides. Not only does this prevent the leather from getting marked but it spreads the clamping force. And, yes occasionally the stick will leave a flat impression on the leather but it never looks bad. Normal lolly sticks at The Works; 50 for £1, or some craft stores 100 for £1, and wide sticks; 100 for about £1.50 Don't use the coloured sticks; the colour comes out and will stain the leather, it even stained some chrome tanned upholstery leather I have. 10 Another bargain. I'm currently 'remodeling' [ahem....clearing out, tidying, sorting the mess of, or as we say here 'redding it out' ] the room I do leather work in. I went to Homebase to look for another tool box and got this; £40, discounted from £160. It was a stock clearance sale. It pays just to keep yours eyes and ears open. I already had two drawer units [the top bit of this] from Halfords for my tools. Sometimes they discount the tool boxes too. Right, that's all from me for now. Over to youse.........

Hi, how are you? I recently acquired an Osborne 85 Krebs style splitter in not so pretty but working condition. I cleaned it up a little and now I'm working on dialing it in. I'm wondering if any of you kind people have any tips, tricks, or advice for me. I got lucky and the previous owner took very good care of the blade so that's one major factor I don't think I have to worry about. This is my first experience using a splitter at all so I'd appreciate any response. For example, how much spring tension should be in the top roller? How much of a blade gap should I be going for? How far out should the bottom roller be from the blade? Did you replace any adjusting screws to improve performance? I'm grateful for any and all replies.

Are 'Head knife' and 'Round knife' two alternative names for the same thing, or is there a difference between them?

Morning leatherworkers, I bet you have all been asked this question before. I'm about to start adventure in leather craft, I'm needing good quality leather tools to start making leather wallet, wallet lanyards, belts and bags. Not really 100% sure on the tools required! I know I will need things like pricking iron but I'm so confused about sizes etc, and other tools required. My grandfather done a lot of leather work but is unfortunately not around anymore to share his knowledge and all his tools are unsalvageable. It would be great if you could help, I don't have a bottomless pit of money. But I do understand it's worth buying good quality tools. I'm based in the UK, so any suggestions on suppliers would be great also. Thanks Paul

Hello everyone I'm brand spanking new to leatherwork, having only ever made stuff (bags & tool rolls) out of canvas up until now. I'd like to progress into leather; making tool rolls and ditty bags to compliment my canvas ones. I'd also like to start making belts too. As with every other newbie I'm totally confused about the tools out there and what I need / don't need. I've read forum posts here, checked out websites and watched YouTube and have a rough idea of the basics. However, I also have a lot of questions and hope to find answer here. I understand the opinion of 'Buy The Best Tools You Can Afford', but I'm not 100% committed to the cause yet, so feel that shopping at Tandy here in the UK could be a good place to start. I read both good and bad things regarding Tandy, but to me the prices are affordable and the convenience of using one shop instead of sourcing tools from all over the world is preferable at this time. Am I making an error with this idea? I'm favouring the use of Tandy's Craftool Pro Stitching Chisels. I like the idea of punching neat, clean holes straight through the leather ready for stitching (and using a stitching awl for single holes in the corners). They had a favourable review from Armitage Leather so think they'll suit me just fine. My questions here are: If I use wing dividers to score a line in the leather do I really need a dedicated adjustable groover as well? Is it a handy enough tool to use elsewhere in projects? If I use a smooth-faced hammer / cobbler's hammer on the stitches afterwards do I need an overstitch wheel? Should I get a diamond awl as well? Just in case? I can't quite justify spending money of strap end punches, even though I can really see the benefit of them; quick, clean cuts every time! I'm thinking of using templates, just for now, instead. Would a head knife be the best choice in cutting the leather, or could I get away with a Stanley knife / box cutter? I think that's the main questions I have for now. We aren't there yet, but my wife and I are considering doing hand tooling, possibly expanding what we offer. Naturally when I think of leather tools, first though is Tandy. But over the years, needing a thing here and there, I have found that some of Tandy's stuff is good, exactly what I needed. But then I'll some other thing and it's near worthless. Totally hit or miss. No telling what I'll get. Who is a supplier and/or manufacturer of quality leather tools, no screwing around? I would especially be interested in names of tool manufacturers so I know who I'm actually looking for regardless of who supplies it.

Hey Everyone. Please have a look at my photos my cross stitch. I am using 0.6 ritza tiger thread and a KSblade punch round dent to make the holes. I tried to use "lin cable au chinois" in size 832 , but it kept unravelling and breaking between all the back and forth. The ritza is waxy and hard to use, but works better. I got about 3/4 through my project and the whole thing got too loose on the front and tight on the back and then a thread snapped. I have come to the realization this method won't work for me. If anyone has any advice i would be so grateful. i feel i need another kind of thread/ and bigger holes spaced a bit wider apart. KS blade punch don't make any bigger punches. so i have ordered a 1mm punch drive from tandy and am gonna punch the holes by hand i think. Please tell me what you think, Thanks , s

I had great results from my KS Blade irons, but feel I’m ready to push forward to pricking irons, and awls to produce a higher quality stitch(eventually LoL!). Palosanto awls came today, and I was imeadiatly impressed with the quality and finish. Service was personal, and shipping was fast. Now I just need to start punching and stitching some scrap before a mess up any good bridle leather.

Not sure which I like better Most of the time I stop by a flea market or an antique store I come out empty handed but when I was out of town for work recently I stopped by a little antique shop and found a box of cobblers tools and in the box I found my first round knife. I'm still pretty excited as it's taken a year to find one! The makers mark is still there but I can't quite make it out and while researching I haven't been able to find one like it to help ID it. I figure it's a long shot but maybe somebody here can help me out. There were also a couple interesting edge irons if you recognize them. One I believe says Ashmead and the other I can't quite make out. One is a #2 and the other a #6. The handles remind me of a knife handle, not sure if they are original or added later. Some of them are stamped with his initials, most are getting on for a 100 years plus and some by makers not seen very often today. In my opinion Buck made some of the best irons, I have some in my toolkit and they are the first I reach for! They are not the prettiest tools in the workshop but have given many years of service and will give many more, as you can see the business ends are still good. I will supply a stamped piece of leather with the Turner-Bridgar makers mark (as in photo) with each iron as a little piece of history/provenance. I hope these go to good homes.
