How did you find leatherworker.net?

About Me

Found 215 results

  1. I did a blog post review of Texas Leather Dies. I won't recreate it here, but the condensed version is --they are amazing. Ten outta ten! If you'd like the details, check it out on my website at https://www.BruceGibsonDesign.com If you're in the market for clicker dies, mallet dies, etc., I highly recommend these folks. They are also Leatherworker.net supporters. Awesome all-around!
  2. My grandfather recently moved into an assisted care facility, and my uncle was cleaning out his things when he found some tools in a WW2-Era bag (the pouch is stamped 1945, and a stamp inside the bag itself says 1943) that he thought I might like, so he shipped them over to me. According to my uncle, he believes my grandfather had taken up leatherworking in between his service in WW2 and the Korean War. I've taken some pictures of the tooling tools that have markings on them. I'm hoping we can try and figure out when they actually date from! They're in remarkably good condition, considering their supposed age. My uncle said the tools were rolled up in the tool bag untouched for a few decades. There is also a crumbling yellow envelope (empty, unfortunately) for an invoice from the "Henry Frank Leather Co., Inc." located at 220 East Washington St, Syracuse 2, N.Y. .. A preliminary Googling shows that a Henry Frank Leather Co existed at an address on Walton St in Syracuse from 1960 to 1991, supported by a photograph from 1983 I found on Flickr. This means that the envelope is from either before 1960 or after 1991 (which is unlikely). The tooling tools are marked with a Craftool Co. marking, and they're numbered 104, 198, 352, 433, 704, and 708. In the bag there was also a weird brown block of some kind. Doesn't appear to be metal (or at least doesn't react to a magnet), and has FP13 stamped on the end of it. A little bit rough to the touch, like a fine-grain sandpaper. Anyone know what it could be?

  4. Hi everyone, This is my first post and I apologize if this is a question that has been asked before. I did do a search but did not find the answer. My question, is there any significant difference between using a creaser with an alcohol burner or an electrical setup? Does one work better than the other? Do you see better results or get a better finished product by using one method over the other? Thanks in advance for your opinions. -Frank

  6. I’m wondering if anybody has tried out the edge bevelers made by Johnleather in China. The price is ridiculously low at about $10 per edger. They look good but I’m concerned about the steel they use. They make them in 316L stainless, which is a low carbon steel. If you’ve tried them out, how good of an edge can you get , and how long does it hold? I love the narrow profile but my wallet doesn’t want to let go of $60+ for a brand that I know will be high quality. Should I pass these up and save for a better brand? Here’s a link to their eBay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F283039884275
  7. Hello, folks. I'm looking for the attached tools, or something equivalent - both brogue punches, and fixed dividers. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.
  8. Hi there, I've signed up for my first leather class and need to bring tools. I know some of you clever people have some great ways to travel with your stuff! Im also not sure what tools to bring? It's a figure carving class. I was looking at an ammo case and my husband said he''d make me a small wood block for a tool holder. I'd love your ideas and pics if you have them. Thank you!

  10. I don't always have the $$$ to give away for something I can fabricate from crap laying around the workshop. From left to right, rear row--> large bag punches and wide oblong specialty punch, variable size billet tip 'V' shape, several size 1/2 round billet tips, 90 degree rounders and full cirlcle punches. The very far back is a gear tip cutter for steampunk projects. Front row, left to right--> wood handle is stitching groover/border tool. I have a long cutter that goes out to 6", wire shaped tool is freehand groover. the square root looking tool is another billet tip cutter. The fork is obviously a thonging chisel and the handle from fork is a french skiver. I still use these tools everyday... My cost is just time spent digging around garage looking for pipe scraps and the time to make the tool itself...
  11. Hello everyone! I have been using this business to buy my supplies. The Vinymo thread from Japan they sell is the best I have ever used! It can be used to hand stitch AND in your machine!!! That’s such a bonus for me! Reasonable prices and extremely great customer service. The owner, Bill has helped me so much. I thought I’d share the link to his site. He has everything from leather, tools, edge finishing supplies, books, etc. the link will get you 10% off your purchase as well. http://i.refs.cc/i95g1PzD?u=1520691892201
  12. Hello there brothers and sisters. I hope you are doing well. After working in a 15 square foot space for a year I think I am going to be at this a while and I am having a 8.5' x 24' Cargo trailer built that will be my workshop. I am looking for ideas regarding recommended benches, tables, and storage ideas you might have. I have built a 40 x 40 wood shop and I was able to lay that out where I could create efficiently but I am a bit lost on setting up a proper leather shop. I travel for work so when stationary it will be 100% leather shop. When I am going to a new location the trailer will be used to haul a corvette in addition to my shop. As a result I will need to be able to move the cabinets to the front of the trailer. I am planning on some residential base cabinets on a base with casters which will lock into the E track. I am having a laser cutter made and it will be delivered in a few weeks so there will be a dedicated rolling cabinet for that. I will build a dedicated glue table with ventilation to the outside after seeing a friends version of one. Stole the idea fair and square. Any must have design elements you would suggest other than good lighting? I am wanting to have dedicated areas for staining, airbrush, a large cutting table with self healing mats and another area for the drill press and belt sander. I am sure of the many people here there are some good "I wish I would have done this" stories to be shared. I would sure enjoy hearing your input. Thanks in advance for the interest. Scott
  13. So I just came out of a local pawn shop and they have me frustrated. I went in looking for repurposing material, while browsing tools I had found a tool box with some hand tools. It was labeled as welding tools. Perusing the tools I found 2 Barry King edge skivers and a round knife. I could not make out a brand on the knife. I offered 40 for all 3 and they turned me down, they wanted me to pay 200 for the whole box! The guy at the counter even started asking me what the tools were and what they were for. I was baffled at that point! How can they turn down selling tools that they had no idea what they were for!
  14. Looking for recommendations for hand edge beveler. I started with the Tandy pro series then tried the Weaver Master tool both are ok but I would like to find a better tool. Primarily I use the Fine and #0 on veg and latigo. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  15. Hello everyone, I am trying to find out where I can get a couple of stamps being used in these two pictures. The first picture I am wanting the circle stamps of different sizes. On the second picture I'd like to find a flower center like this one. Thank you!

  17. Looking for some advice on how to create a border like this. Mainly on what stamps to use and where to find them. The project is a large leather-topped desktop so hoping to figure out some way of keeping the stamping simple as its going around a large area. Also would love any advise on where to find any flowing vine/leaf pattern stamps in general (as in example 3). Thanks in advance.
  18. I'm just getting started in leather working and I've got questions about cutting. Some of the shapes I'm needing have curves and angles. I'm using 8-9oz leather and a husky razor knife. I'm having trouble following my trace and leaving little cut "burrs" when I have to re-cut over a line due to thickness or not staying in the line. 1. Can someone recommend a different tool or method? 2. Will an edge slicker sufficiently smooth those cut burrs? Thanks for any help.
  19. I’m here to confess my curiosity about Stricking / Tooling Sticks, along with my lack of knowledge about them. I am hoping this community can help me to understand the construction and use of these sticks so I can reproduce one or two for myself. I am very excited to try tooling with one. I have some these sticks that similar to a maul. Others I’ve seen are 18” to 20” long. Some with both ends square and a handle in between, others with square end and tapered to the opposite end. I’m somewhat confused as to the use of the longer version. Questions: 1). Is the extra length just there for counter balance? Also used like a maul? 2). Or is the extra length used of the lever point, using it and the elbow resting on the table as the pivot point? I have purchase enough Katalox I believe to make a long and a short version, but need your help/input before I can make the first cut. Thank you Tane
  20. I just bought a CraftTool rotary hole punch thinking it would be the last one I ever buy. The darn thing requires so much pressure I'm all but done for the day after punching one of the #6 holes, the largest one. Never had any issues with the cheap ones I've been buying for years, other than they wear out after 5 years or so. If you have some tips on getting the CraftTool punch to work more easily, it would be appreciated!

  22. Hello all, its been a while. Anyway, I am in the market for a new edge beveler, and I have been told that Barry King Tools makes some good edgers for the money. I was looking to either purchase their grooved edger or their common edger. They told me that the common edger gives more of a rounded edge than the grooved edger, but that the grooved edger lasts longer. I havent really had great luck with precision and consistency with the style of edger that the common edger is. The grooved edger seems more like Tandy's pro edger, which is what i'm used to. The problem is, the smallest size pro edger tandy sells is a #2, which isnt small enough, and their new fine edger is too small. I'm working a lot with 4/5 and 5/6 oz leather, and the #2 tandy sells takes too much off and does not always cut a perfectly straight bevel. I guess my question is, does anyone have any experience with the sizing of barry kings edgers and possibly how the sizing compares to tandy's? What oz of leather is recommended to use with each size beveler? Do you think the grooved edger or the common edger would be more ideal? Thank you for the input! Zayne
  23. Folks, I need some advice. I am brand new to this craft, I have now done some very basic projects. I am dyeing, stamping, and a few other basic things. I want to get a swivel knife and start learning to use it, but I want to start with the right tool. I am not concerned with the price of the tool, just that it is the correct blade size and angle, and that the knife is from a high quality maker, one that you folks would consider a high quality instrument. Please advise.
  24. This is my first post so I hope this is the right place. I read on hear in a post that I can not find now that people are making their own tools I have had good luck with this and sometimes they just dont work like the factory made tool. Lets face it most of us do not have a machine shop out back to make some of the tools to the tolerances required LOL. I did how ever read about making petal lifters from screw drivers. Here is one that I made today. I am wondering what have others made or repurposed from other things and it has worked out? Ok so I typed this whole thing and now it will not let me upload the photo. I will keep trying and let everyone know Ha ha I resized the pic here ya go!
