  1. I am embarking on a project making bench cushions for a restaurant. I have been doing some research on sealing veg tan leather, and it seems that Resolene would be the best choice for sealing leather that will inevitably be spilled on and incur considerable wear. (This video convinced me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyTg_hfpNUM). My second question concerns upkeep: Is there a regimen I should implement every 6 months or so to re-seal or to condition the leather? Or should I leave it to the natural oils from all the skin contact it will recieve over time? Thank you for any advice you have!
  2. Hi All - New to the forums and wanted some feedback on my companies' leather craft. All our products are handmade. Hand stitched, hand burnished, we hammer in our copper rivets by hand. We use only full grain, vegetable tanned leather (quebracho, mimosa blend). We'd love some feedback, especially on our rolls - see attached photos. They are really functional, but we're looking for suggestions, features to add, or general improvements to the design. Any suggestions for how you'd use them? Features you would like to see ideally? Each slot of the center strap tool roll with the wrenches adjusts so you can put various items inside. The art / pen and pencil rolls have the side pocket for extra storage which closes on its own when rolled. More photos on our website: https://altaandina.com/products/
  3. A custom order to be used in a Larp ( live action roleplaying game ) here in Sweden. Took about 40 hours all and all. The entire build is from Vegetable tanned leather. Patterns, colors and patina grew up throughout the build and it´s fully sealed for use outdoors in rain and the cold.
  4. Hi! My name is Luna, I am a sustainable accessory designer based in Berlin and I am looking for advices. For my MA thesis, I am researching into the automotive industry and I am trying to theoretically develop a highly durable leather, able to last for multiple generations. I am focusing my research on three key parameters: sustainable livestock, which give the best quality of hides, vegetable tanning, the most durable, firm and resistant option, and bio-based PU coating. I know that Polyurethane coating help increasing durability, wear-resistance and UV protection on leather and is quite common in the automotive industry. However, I don't find any research paper debating PU coating applied on vegetable tanned leather. Then, I am wondering if a really, really thin layer, perfectly manufactured and balanced on the veg-tanned leather is possible. Also, do you think that the "patina", that veg-tanned leather naturally develop while aging, will develop also with a really really thin PU coating applied on it? I am looking forward to hearing your opinion and advices and I would love to thank you all in advance! Luna
  5. Hello All, I'm a newbie to leather, l started introducing leather on my waxed canvas bags and l'm hooked. It's a great (but expensive) medium to work with so l have started to make some small accessory products and one bag but hoping to one day have learnt enough about processes and leather to start making a small collection of bags. Fingers crossed.
  6. Vegetable tanned leather which appears to be a double shoulder for sale. About 6-7 oz (2.5-3mm) leather thickness, about 9 to 10 square feet. (floor tiles are 18" tiles for reference) This double shoulder has some character - a lot of visible fat wrinkles that can add some charm to your piece. Along with a few scars and such. The backside is very smooth. I have more leather than I can use right now, so I'm selling off some pieces such as this when I have the time. Appears similar to Tandy item #9050-82, their price $70-$109 plus tax. My price: $55 plus shipping. I am also selling a larger, cleaner shoulder, photos in another listing, for $70 plus shipping. Combine with second shoulder to save on shipping and save on leather: $115 plus shipping. YinTx
  7. Dear all, I am looking for suppliers for Veg. Tanned leather like ecopell. Do you have any suggestion for me? Thank you very much Anna
  8. Hi all you lovely informed leather workers! I am new to leather crafting, and have been getting really into carving and tooling. I really like the suppleness of milled leather for the kinds of bags I am using, and just wondering if anyone has a source for this kind of leather outside of Tandy. The leather I've gotten from Tandy has been nice, but I would love to find a more affordable/wholesale place to purchase, or just any alternative. Any leads or information would be wonderful! Thanks! Hailey San Juan Island, WA, USA
  9. Hi dear community, I looking for a suppliers, who are selling printed Veg. tanned leather. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you for your help. Anna

  11. Hello all, Does anyone know of any tanneries left in Canada? I'm specifically looking for veg tanned, but it would be interesting to know even if chrome tanned only. Side quest: I'm also looking for a weaving mills in Canada that make canvas. it seems like there is absolutely no industries left in canada except petrol, wood, stones and wheat.
  12. Hi all. Thought I would share a recent project of mine. This is a briefcase I finished not too long ago. Comments welcome!
  13. I'm a total leather newbie... And I'm new to the forums. So, hi! I worked with leather at a camp I used to go to as a child and I LOVED it. Now I'm running a small hand-made jewelry business, and I am considering incorporating leather into my creations. I would like to learn how to work with it again since I have so many fond memories as a child. My business is geared toward sustainable jewelry, and so I was wondering if there were any sustainable/organic/green/eco friendly/whatever leather suppliers that you guys know of. I've done a ton of research into this subject in the past few months and I've seen a lot of mixed information. Some say vegetable tanning is better, others say it's not, some say it depends on the individual tanner's process...Some say to buy from the USA/Europe and not China/India/Mexico because of the regulations... So, can you help me out a bit? I'm not experienced at all with this Thanks!
  14. I'm learning to brain-tan leather and was wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of using brain-tanned leather for tooling. I'm new to leatherworking, but am ultimately interested in transferring illustrations onto leather and carving them like this. Everything that I've read thus far indicates that I should be using veg-tanned leather rather than brain-tanned leather, but I'd like to be able to use the same leather for tooling that I'm using for garment construction. Any advice for a beginner?
  15. Hello! I have a few questions about vegetable tanned goatskins- hopefully someone (or millions of you) might be able to answer. I have never handled vegetable tanned goatskins- is it as durable as cowhide? I'd like to it for a project that will require wet-forming- will it work the same as cowhide in this sense? Or will it shrink? I'm specifically wanting to make a "bush hat", similar to a cowboy hat but simpler. Thanks in advance!
  16. Hello, This question is for those who have worked with Springfield's "Top Grade Tooling Sides" and Wickett & Craigs tooling sides (Or Hermann Oak). I am wondering if there is a visible difference in quality between the two? I will not be carving at all, just cutting shapes and sewing and riveting, so I am looking for a leather that will look great. I have been using Springfield's for a while and have been very happy with it. So - is it worth it to pay a few dollars more for the Wickett just based on the final look? Thanks!
  17. I have premium grade Hermann Oak Leather, vegetable tanned and dyed medium brown, that has been well stored for a few years for sale. I hesitate to ship it because of the added expense and I like people to see what they are buying in person. I am in Medford, Oregon, (Southwestern Oregon). Anyone out there interested in some great leather? Prices are negotiable and reasonable.
