  1. I have just acquired a work harness (with collar and hames) for my equine. It is not the fancy black multilayer high-polish carriage harness but rather flat, square-cut brown plain leather, 6 mm thick on stressed areas (breast strap, britchin, etc.) and 5mm thick on support straps. While dry and stiff from storage/disuse, there is no sign of cracking. I would appreciate any advice on restoring the leather to the natural flexibility it should have for harness work. My plan was to give it a good saddle soaping to clean and add moisture to the leather first and then to give it as many coats of Neatsfoot oil as it will absorb. I believe that I should not wait for the leather to be completely dry before oiling it, as the skin does need to be at a normalized level of moisture but I am not sure how to determine just how much moisture it needs. Should I: keep soaping it until I see a darker color going all the way through the leather as viewed from the edge and then let it dry until the surface lightens or should I just soap it up and wipe down once and then oil immediately? Once it is oiled, is there any way to add more moisture if it needs it? Please share your experience!
  2. Would like to buy a copy of "Making Harness. A Step by Step Guide" (2005) by Lewis Martin and Daniel Preston. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
  3. I am in need of advice and guidance. I am a physical Therapist. I have a leather harness that is intended for spinal traction and unloading treatment as a form of manual therapy. The company that made them is longer available and I am interested in trying to make my own as a personal project for learning a new skill set but also contributing something to my practice that I made myself. I am able to determine if it would be safe for use and frankly it would only be used for myself. I have the actual product already but would like advice on what type of materials I would get in terms of the type of leather for the hip pads as well as the straps. From what I have read, it seems like the saddle leather would be good for the hip pads and perhaps either harness or bridle leather for the straps. The straps are also lined with a polyester webbing straps that is designed for high load capacity( 300lbs ** way above what I would need). This is a website with a few pictures of it. https://www.freddykaltenborn.com/books-tools/morgan-lumbar-traction-harness/ Any thoughts?
  4. Hi everyone, I know it's also a matter of preference, but I'm curious. I've used 6/7 ounce leather for some gorgeous corsets I've made in the past. It gave a decent sturdiness to the body without being too thick. Curious what other people use, and the type of leather they'd recommend. I'd also like a recommendation for an ounce and leather on harnesses. I've used a 4 ounce in the past and it was comfortable for the wearer. Thanks
  5. Hi all. I hope you are all well in this crazy time! We have recently got a 10 month old rescue cat called Ruby. She is now an inside cat due to lots of traffic, bird life and stray cats in the area etc. I am taking her outside on a little nylon harness that I bought. It does keep her safely under control but it is a real pain to get on her and I think the thin straps might dig in as well. I am looking at trying to make a harness for her from leather &/or other materials. If people have made harnesses for dogs or cats, can they tell me what to use I do have some calf veg tan as well as some softer synthetic pieces, I don't know if they would rub or be too hot in our 100+deg heat at Dubbo NSW. Any ideas on patterns, leather or other materials, closures, lining etc would also be welcome. I like ones that you step the cat into (jacker style) rather than trying to get her head in a loop or tangle with straps like her current one. Ruby is a small slim cat so it would have to be rather narrow to allow her freedom of movement. This is her in her synthetic harness enjoying the weeds in our garden!. Thanks for any guidance.
  6. Does anyone have patterns/ schematics for draft harnesses/ bridles/ and lead lines?!
  7. Nice condition Pearson turns freely as does the treadle base. Used for Saddle and Harness repair until last January. Pick up would be preferred, It comes with 2 additional needles, Has a small wax pot off a Singer 29, and he does not have a bobbin winder unit. I have seen aftermarket electric ones for sale. Taking best offers,
  8. Want to buy an attachment for making leather rounds on a Pearson Harness Stitching machine. Please contact me if you have such a device or know of someone who has. Thank you Silverd
  9. Hi I want to order men's belt buckles but the minimum qty is large. I'd like to go 50/50 on an order of 600 men's buckles. ANTIQUE NICKEL. Note, the photos are the brass color. They are $.85 each not inc. shipping from China (I'm guessing no more than $150 for the full order). They fit a 1.5" belt.

  12. A while ago I made a harness for an Akita. It didn't go so smoothly. It broke twice and wasn't the correct dimensions. But, it taught me a lot. 1. Don't skive the turn where any hardware will be.... And 2. It pays to make a mock up in craft foam to test fit it to the dog. This harness is made from 1" wide 9/10 oz European bridle leather in Havana brown from rjf leather. I used mostly .6mm tiger thread to hand stitch it (fit my 8spi irons better) but I ran out and had to use some .8mm which worked well. The back strap was a problem on the last one. So to fix, I made it tripple thickness. All turns are full thickness and not skived or split. Each chape has a stationary and floating keeper. Let me know what you think. I'll try and get pics on the dog (for a husky this time)
  13. Hello, can somebody identify that sewing machine? It looks quite cool and heavy duty but I can't find any information about the producer. Thank you for your help. Regards
  14. I am looking for a harness foot for my American straight needle, I have several outsole feet, I've been to pilgrim, landis and Gateway machine, all with no luck so if anybody has one or knows where some are please let me know.. Thank you
  15. Whipped out this handy little sheath for my Bahco Laplander folding saw. Leather is 5oz. Wickett & Craig Buck Brown Harness for the pouch, and 12oz. Buck Brown Harness for the belt loop. Saddle stitched and brass easy set rivets for added strength. Cheers, -Matt
  16. Hello. Is there any good instructions on how to make breechings available? I know haslucks book, but it's a bit odd. I plan to make the 4" wide in 5mm leather (sorry for two measurement systems in the same sentence). And I defo want a big sturdy Dee in the end, not weird hooks as hasluck talks about. It's for a working draft horse (18.2 HH) so it's a bit on the big side. Suggestions, experience, ideas? Just shoot.
  17. Hello, everyone! I am so glad I have found this place as everything I did in the past, was done "testing" and looking up tutorials that do not exist. I started doing some leather harnesses and accessories, and I need to cut thin strips of leather. I used scissors to begin, and then I bought a professional cutter, but the trick with the cutter is that when I have to cut long strips, the cutter tends to "slip" and if that happens the whole stripe is lost. What are your suggestions for properly cutting leather? Thank you!
  18. Just wondering if anyone out there would have a pattern for a Dog Harness, with & without a chest plate. I have never made one even though they look easy enough to make, I dont want to stuff up along the way as it is for a customer. This is the dog it will be going on. Cheers Damien
  19. What are the differences between these three kinds of leather? I make personal objects like wallets and bags, and until discovering Latigo I just went to Tandy to pick out hides that seem to best suit my needs. While researching my last order with Hide House this question began to nag me, and the thought occurred to me that I should order some of the bridle and harness hides they sell just to see what they are like. But that's a lot of money for R&D if I can't use the hide. Another question: is the California latigo they sell at Hide House different from other latigo? I'm grateful for any insight the brain trust here can give me.

  21. I was reading up on Vachetta leather, but there was very little information on it online other than generic information that applies to all veg tanned leather. Does anyone have any experience with European Vachetta or can any of you shed light on the differences between this and other types? Thanks. Also- I'm mostly interested in it for belts.
  22. Hi everyone - I've read completely through the guide to choosing a sewing machine, and have it narrowed down to the consew 206RB and the Juki 1541s, and now I'm stuck. They are both around the same price (although I found a dealer in Dallas who has a Juki clone called a Typical GC0605A for about $300 less). I make fashion style body harnesses, corsets, belts, and some garments. So far I've been sewing on a Janome MC6600, which does ok most of the time with very light leather, but gives up over thicker seams and occasionally just decides it doesn't want to sew something that its been working on all day with no problem. I generally don't sew anything more than single 5-8oz pieces or multiple pieces around 10 ounces total, and I figure if I really need to, then I can hand stitch pieces heavier than that. For the heavy pieces its usually not being attached to anything, but is decorative edge stitching. Which machine do you think sounds more appropriate? I would be upgrading to the servo motor for either. Thanks so much for any advice.
  23. My new machine! I'm pretty sure it's a 'Pearson No.6 Harness machine'. There's what I presume is a serial or model number stamped on the top which reads 4949, if that means anything to anyone. It seems to be running relatively well, although I need to get some proper thread for it and fine tune the tension. Also, purely cosmetically it could do with a little bit of attention, I might touch up the gold lettering on the top wheel, and maybe even paint it black one day, but we'll see. Anyway, all in all I'm rather pleased.
  24. Hi Everyone. I am new here, and have been working with leather for probably 20-years or more--mostly just using cowboy gear. My wife does carving and I do custom saddles and stamping. We are moving from Texas and have an almost new Sew Line GA5 head, table, 1725 clutch motor and bobbin winder all assembled and ready to go to work--asking $850.00 and used it maybe 10-times. We keep it oiled and in top shape--it is literally like new. We'd like to sell it as assembled and we live in Sealy, Texas--about 20-minutes west of Katy and 40-minutes west of the southern edge of Houston. This is a great machine with a huge shuttle hook, sharp adjustable height walking dogs that won't mar your tooling leather projects and we sewed up to 3/4" of heavy skirting with it and it did a superior job. I have lots of pictures if you are interested. My email is mikesuemoore@outlook.com and we are moving out of state in a couple weeks and would really like to see this very nice set up, go to someone who can use it. We bought it for our own tack needs and never did commercial work with it, which is why we only used it a few times. We ended up buying a huge upright stand up machine because it goes through about 1 1/4" of skirting which we needed for our saddle skirts--glued sheep's lining made for a bit much for this GA5. So it has never been abused or improperly used. You can also call me if you want and I'd be happy to answer any/all questions you may have. I am an ex-ranch cowboy, educated corrective Farrier and all around pain in the ass, but I am mellowing out with age and so my wife was the only woman to tame me--this is her machine. She does all the stitching. 979-885-7187 This is listed on Craig's List and we will sell to the first serious buyer--we can only help you load it because we are short on time--moving in a couple weeks. Thanks guys.
