Hi Everyone I have enjoyed viewing the topics on this site for sometime, but once I turned creating leather goods from a hobby into a business, I knew it was time to join. I may at some point have a tip or two to help others, or need a few myself. My business is J. Scott Handcrafted. I am located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. A coastal town. I create watch bands, slim card holders and am beginning patters for shaving kits, mouse pads etc. I prefer to work from scratch or make a pattern for the work at hand. Next creation I start again with a fresh pattern. This is slower than using templates etc., but suits me at least for now. It also allows me to make small changes and keep the process of creating fresh, rather than same each time. My main leather is Kangaroo, which is quite popular here. I only sell within Australia, due to the issues of exporting Kangaroo leather (forms, permits etc.). Here is my site handmade leather goods Here are a few pics of the watch bands done recently. One is Australian Barramundi, One is Cane Toad, shrunken grain Sheep, which is my favourite. And last is snake. All four have Kangaroo under- lining.

Hey guys, Im looking to get some new geometric stamps and bevelers as the ones i acquired a while are of poor quality and im just not getting a defined stamp out of them now. Ideally looking for some geometric stamps that are a bit "different" as well. Are there any suggestions on where i could purchase stamps that will send to Australia or New Zealand? have had a look on Tandy Thanks

Hi all, I have a consew 226R and I'm ready to put a servo motor on it for more control. My problem is that most of the recommended motors on leather forums, like the Reliable motors (which seem reasonable for well under $200au), are all for sale overseas or on ebay. Whilst some of them look like they have the voltage option for Australia, which is 220v, I can't tell if they would then have an Australian plug. The motors that are for sale from Australian vendors all look extremely expensive to me by comparison, around $400au. I'd really appreciate any info from fellow Aussie leather workers who have been down this path. And from anyone else too of course, if you have seen this type of question before. Regards, Carrie.

Hi Everyone! I'm just going to ramble all the questions because I want to know anything and everything! I've been heavily dabbling in leather for the past year working with veg tan from Tandy and mostly getting my information from there too. I want to break away from just veg tan, and especially get away from Tandy as I saw it as an easy distributor. Now that I've been scouring through this forum I've realized my mistake with Tandy. So I'm wondering, where do all the aussies buy their leather? I'd like to try not to pay an arm and a leg for overseas shipping, but more than willing to pay for quality. I also recently did an intensive shoe making short course. I got to design, cut and make my own pair of boots (besides the seamstress parts). Are there any shoe makers here who could give me pointers on where to start for supplies? And also what type of leather and thickness do you use for your upper leather? And also for your lining leather? These were answers I got but didn't retain during the course as I was pretty flat out making those shoes. I've also searched up machinery and tools and know I'll have to source those overseas if I wanted to start up a workshop. Wallets!! I've been making a few wallets here and there that are tooled on veg tan leather from Tandy and lined with their (crappy) lining leather. What leather if I were to pull away from veg tanned would be fun to use in any future wallets? I make billfolds currently with tooled designs relating to video games but I see all these beautifully finished upholstery leathers and I'd love to work with them somehow. (I just love making things) Any other tips are definitely appreciated!

Hello from sunny Western Australia, I have been dabbling in leatherwork for only a few months but have taken to it like a duck to water. Ironically my mother's maiden name was Last - so maybe there is something in my DNA. Virtually everything I have learnt is from youtube. A big "THANK YOU" to everyone on this site who has placed information on youtube. Even little videos on things like thread comparison are really helpful and can save money. I have watched so many tutorials that I am sure I have seen at least one of everyone's. I note gmace99 is on here (UK Saddlery) I have watched lots of your videos and learnt heaps. Thank you so much. PS: you're not that bad a cameraman. Don't think I will ever take on making a saddle, but... who knows.... I have just opened an Etsy shop: LTLAustralia I only do small leathergoods and don't charge much compared to the time it takes to hand stitch, etc. Until I feel I am reallllllly good, I will be happy to sell cheaper. I don't want to use any machinery - I enjoy the traditional ways. The range of info and the knowledge base on this forum is fabulous, and I look forward to learning a heap more. Cheers, Leah

Hi Y'all! I'm relocating to Bangkok, Thailand at the end of September. Unfortunately, I'm having almost ZERO luck finding tanneries and suppliers in Thailand, Southeast Asia, Japan, and anywhere else that makes economic sense. So far, all I've found are the Tandy store in Australia, a similar store in Japan, and several Thai tanneries that supply chrome tanned leather. And that's it. To date I have not found any source of the veg tanned leather I will need. Nor have I found a decent source for hardware and tools. If anyone knows of good, reputable tanneries and suppliers that I can use, please, let me know. Thanks. Mav

Hey all, had a little issue today while experimenting with the airbrush. Well, 2 issues really. The big one though was at the end. I masked off the area I wanted to finish with masking tape, pressed the edges down firmly to get a good seal, but after spraying the finish on and taking the tape off I found quite a few areas of leakage, as you can see in the picture. So the first question is, what do you use for masking off? I was using regular white masking tape, is there something better I can use that won't leave behind any residue to prevent later dyework? Second point, as I'm sure you can see, is that I'm getting a fair bit of leakage under the stencil. This one was a metal stencil and looked to be good and flat against the leather but even so there's leaks and spots where there shouldn't be. I am sure some of this is due to my really cheap single action airbrush but even so, I'm getting this a lot. What pressure do you guys run your airbrushes at? I bought a regulator to control mine as the compressor didn't have a very good one and (from what I recall, I have to convert the reading to psi to understand my gauge) I run it at around 15-20 psi. The airbrush is a suction model I use for all dye applications these days - no more uneven finishes! - but stencils I'm having problems with. Do you use anything like a spray mount on them to keep them in place, or just hold them there? Any other tips for a newbie airbrusher? Many thanks Raven ps: I'm in Queensland, Australia and the dyes and finish I'm using come from here - http://www.leatherfinishingproducts.com.au/index.php/cobblestone/ - Cobblestone dyes. Fantastic product, much easier to use than the Eco-flo and dilute with spirits or water.
