I just completed this piece. I'm working on a series of bags featuring tooling based on carved wooden designs from Norwegian stave churches, the wonderful old wooden medieval wooden churches. This is a double headed dragon from Ornes stave church, the oldest surviving stave church.

Hello good people! I'm kinda new to this and was looking for helpful information which led me to this page, so I'm hoping someone with more experience here can help me! I made a few smaller projects up until now but wanted to try and make something bigger this time: the bag in the pictures. Sadly I'm not quite sure what type and thickness of leather to use for this project? I read that cowhide / calfskin is mostly used in making bags, would that be a good option here? Since in my mind the bag needs to have some kind of stability to it and from my experience cowhide seems to be kinda soft? Also which thickness can you recommend for a project like this? Since again in my mind it needs to have a firmer body to stay in shape and not get distorted while wearing it. I hope somebody here can help me and I'm thanking everybody who answers in advance!

Just finished stitching this up. Yellow fauxstrich leather, with topaz gold thread. First time trying out the decorative Norwegian stitch on the handle--that sure takes a long time to do!

I finished this small "clutch" bag for a co-worker. Some nice chrome-tanned floral print leather, with a matching strap.

The bag is almost done. I'm trying to decide which strap works better for this bag. The narrow strap is red leather, which matches the tooled front and back panels. The wider strap is red cloth, which matches the red tweed sides and zipper top. This is the Lewis chessmen queen-- more detail here for those who want a better look.

Got it all stitched up tonight! The Lewis Chessmen are a group of chess pieces found in the early 1800s near Uig Bay, on the Isle of Lewis. They are Viking era pieces, carved out of walrus ivory, and nobody knows why they were cached there. The pieces can be viewed in the British Museum in London, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. They're wonderful pieces of early Medieval art. This is the first of a set-- Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, Rook/Warder. The pawns aren't quite so photogenic for bags. Leather: 2 mm veg tan, Eco-Flo Red Waterstain. It's probably one of my Tandy stash of miscellaneous hides. Thread: Ritza Chestnut, 5mm spacing Fabric: Black denim (on the inside) and red Harris Tweed (backed with an iron-on stabilizer). Harris tweed is manufactured not far away from where the chess pieces were found, so it's fitting for use here. zipper charm: a Lewis chessmen bishop, from Ebay. Strap: purchased from Amazon. I could make a strap, but it would take FOREVER to stitch by hand. The price I paid is less than I could actually get the hardware and leather for.

I'm working on this Green Man face for a bag. I've got a handle on the floral tooling (oak leaves), but I'm not sure how to best do the face, especially the nose (and by extension, the eyes). I'm not sure what tools I should use, or what sequence of techniques, to get it right. Any of you figure modeling experts got some advice?

This was my first real leather project and the one that got me so excited to do leatherwork. I made this bag for my sister’s Birthday. She has yet to receive it. It is an original design, something simple, no hardware, but relatively tough. I made this bag on my Singer 128 using #69 bonded nylon black thread and a size 18 leather needle. There are a lot of firsts in this bag. First bag! First design! First sewing a round item! First time finishing it up with hand stitching! First time poking my thumb with the hand stitching needle! Only third sewing project altogether. I know it’s not “perfect”, but IMHO, it’s not bad!

I'm making a series of bags. This is the first one. It's big enough to fit most smart phones-- 7" long by 6" wide (18.5 X 14.5 cm). My sister loves it and wants to give it a home, so this one is no longer in my inventory! The design is Craftool Pro D2171. I haven't really done a "diaper" effect so I thought I'd try it out here to add interest and texture to the back. That's Angelus Rose you see as the lovely pink shade, and Clear Tokonole on those gorgeous smooth edges. Ritza Black thread, some red waxed linen on the zipper, and a metallic gold thread on the D-ring tabs.

Hi All, I'm hoping you kind folks have some insight to help. I'm looking for advice on lining. I have a complicated backpack-handbag convertible project I’m working on. There are pockets on both the exterior and interior so this bag is going to need a lining with some structure to it. The client had initially prototyped with a cork-faced fabric, but I found it flaking off. The exterior I think is going to be a 2-3oz veg tan, maybe thicker. Overall dimensions are 14”w x 16”h x 6”d. What kinds of linings would you all suggest? Thanks!

First off let me state that this was my first attempt at making a bag of this sort I usually make wallets lol Anyways I was asked by a customer to make a bag large enough for study material/books and some clothing items. My original idea was to make a tote with handles but along the way ended up deciding to make it a shoulder carry with a flap closure in case of unfavorable weather. So I basically Bit off more than I could chew and didnt manage my time well enough and ended up pulling an all-nighter to deliver on the deadline. Great learning experience and I realized I really like making bags. comments, critiques and questions always welcome. Thanks for looking !! -
I finished this up about two years ago. It was my first effort to do a large piece like this. I love the way it has broken in and started to patina.

Just looking to get some feedback and see what the general consensus is. I finshed this bag friday after having it kicking around in my head for quite a while. I started off with the smooth side of the leather showing on the first side but then decided i liked it better this way so I took everything apart and started over. It has a zipper closure but I didnt really like it exposed so i added the flap cover and has a simple red bandana lining inside. I don't have any "fancy" leather working tools so everything is done by hand, including cutting the fringe with scissors...not the most fun thing I've ever done to be honest. I won't lie I've been posting some of my stuff elsewhere but there doesn't seem to be much interaction when asking for feedback, so please feel free to comment. Thanks

Ning Bags for the win! My wife's family has an heirloom, a Masonic sword with a leather carrying case, about 100 years old or so, belonging to a great-grandfather. When it came to my brother in law last year, after a death in his family, I was asked to restitch the leather case. The original thread was likely cotton or linen, and had nearly all deteriorated. So I matched the original thread with some Ritza synthetic thread (no reason to keep the "authentic" thread type, since it's not really a "historic" piece), and re-stitched the entire case. But there was turn lock on the case, which was missing the turning piece. I could not locate a match -- all the ones I could locate online (The Buckle Guy, Ohio Travel Bag, etc.) were 1 inch or larger, none 3/4 inch in width like this one. But today, on a random search, I struck gold, and I found the turn lock in the right size and the right color. The pieces will fit seamlessly in the current slots on the leather, and the case will be completely restored.

So this is my first attempt at making a bag of any sort. I’m actually really pleased with how it turned out. I’m calling this a prototype because I plan on making more with nicer leathers. While this looks pretty decent there’s quite a few scars on the leather and while it worked for this bag that’s not really the look I’m going for. Also I need to tweak the pattern a bit. And I need to make a strap just waiting on some leather to come in. The bag is made of 2.5/3.0oz European veg tan from Tandy. Stitched with twist 0.45 cream linen thread and I used some cheap 5mm pricking irons from Amazon. The liner is some sort of suede from an old jacket liner I believe (my aunt gave it to me when I told her I was making leather goods) I got the gold hardware from sav-more leather in Downtown LA. I’d really like to hear what you think or maybe offer some insight. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to glue the seams before sewing ( I didn’t ) also I forgot to undo the zipper A little bit before closed it up so that was a total pain trying to get the zipper open so I could flip it. Hi all, recently finished an overnight / gym duffel for myself (Happy Christmas!). I drafted the design from scratch, and it is completely handstitched. Materials used were a light khaki crocodile, with olive HAAS tumbled calf leather (roughly 2.5 to 3oz weight from memory, thanks @nstarleather!). Thread is linen 532 Fil au Chinois in grey, and the edge paint is a custom color I mixed using Uniters (with a gloss top coat). Webbing for the strap is 38mm wide cotton webbing sourced from Amazon. Hardware is plated solid brass from @Buckleguy Supplier; great quality as always. As always, took longer to make than I thought it would

Hi ! I was looking at several saddle stitched bags made in UK sharing a similar construction. ie thick bridle leather, zipper and frame on the top and a flat bottom. We can also notice that all those bags show a vertical strip of leather on their narrow sides. Hello all! Here is a leather tote bag I finished a while ago. The handles are an 8 strand round braid and the first thing I've braided. The leather is 8oz veg-tan with soft pigskin lining on the inside. The sheridan pattern is my own work. This is also my first time using a bar grounder in my carving. Let me know what you think! Hello all leatherworkers, I was recently asked by a fellow member id I had a pattern for a backpack I made. So after putting it together for him I thought I should also share with the community. It's not a full size pattern, it is drawn on 1/4 inch grid paper so it will have to scaled up. I also added my construction process/instructions with the pattern. I hope it makes since.
