  1. It’s been a long time since I posted any of my work. I still seem to end up mostly doing books. I keep changing how the pages are added as I can’t decide what offers the best use. Currently I’m favouring Midori style or disk bound. I’ve also been gravitating to pyrography as my carving skills are wanting. Also I had an old alligator skin I was given by a neighbour who had it in their loft for years. I had it for a long time too without using it till I finally had an idea of how to use the section round the cloaca
  2. Hello All, I am looking for books which can teach me how to make leather goods patterns. I am intrested in learning advance techniques of pattern making for making handbags and briefcases. Thanks
  3. This is Figure Carving Finesse, packed with info on how to perfect your figure carving skills. I think it normally retails for around $30, I'll sell this one for $20 plus shipping. YinTx
  4. This one is How to Make Holsters. It came rolled up, and I will probably ship it rolled as well, so there is a slight curl overall, but it will probably flatten out. This retails all over the place, I'll sell it for $10 plus shipping. It has a lot of details as well, including templates for various holsters, belts and carving patterns. A great resource if you are looking to make holsters. YinTx
  5. This book is Coloring Leather by Al Stohlman. A great book that shows how to mix and dilute dyes, including the Pro dyes. It also has color wheels, how to highlight your leather carvings, how to understand light sources, etc. Awesome book if you do any leather carving or dye work. This book seems to retail for around $20, I will sell it for $12 plus shipping. YinTx
  6. I have some leftover books for sale. Leathercraft – Lacing and Saddle stitching – Book #3. $5.00 + shipping Creating Nature Designs - Free + shipping How to Carve Leather – A. Stohlman (large format) $5.00 + shipping Design Artistry – F.O. Baird (Large format) $20.00 + shipping The Stohlman Encyclopdia of Saddlemaking – Stohlman (all 3 books – 1 new in wrapper, 2 open) $150.00 + shipping Upholstery Techniques, 2nd – W. Lloyd Gheen $5.00 + Shipping If you want any book(s), I will ship the book to you with the cost of the book and the shipping. I figured after the last time, everyone wants “media rate” and so I wont know the cost until its packed and weighed at the USPS. I will contact you with my name/address and total cost and you can send a personal check or money order. THIS IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. Sorry. Shipping from USA only – unless you want to pay a lot more to ship outside of USA. Last comment. My work hours are funky, so I may not be able to ship daily. Thank you
  7. Do anyone here have books from studio tac creative? What are your opinion about it? I am thinking of getting one or two books from them but since I will have to import them, not sure if it worth it. It will cost me around 40 euros per book. Is there something better or in that style besides the ones from studio tac?

  9. Hey everyone, I have been making handbags for some time now, and like all my leather work I have taught myself how to do it. I have bought a couple books but for the most part they have been redundant to what I already know. Now I'm looking for an answer to a couple specific questions, and maybe someone can answer these questions here or direct me to a book or instructional video that could help. I have usually glued the linning to the sides but this doesn't work with zippered pockets, right? so I have to leave the linning loose. I have a certain adversion to this, I just feel like it's sloppy. Does any one know a solution other than a completely loose lining, or can assure me that this is the right way to do this. Next is my question of bag leather. Ive found that if Im using a 6-7oz leather it works good for messenger bags, but for a standard bag like a hobo bag I would want a 3-4 oz but sometimes it seems like that might not be enough stiffness, is it appropriate to use an interfacing
  10. Hello there , for a few days now I've been looking at these asian wallets (http://goodsjapan.com/leathercraft-book-mens-long-wallet-made-of-leather-diy-leather-crafting-1636-p.asp) , there's many Japanese books on them and whatnot but I don't read Japanese, I don't wanna deal with any of the shipping stuff and whatnot so do any of y'all know where I could find any books here in the US or just order off a more common site that have similar or patterns of the same style ? Maybe an ebook or in-store Thank y'all in advance! (:
  11. Hello Everyone; Well, it's been a while since I posted here but here I am again for a minute or two. As some of you already know, I've had to give up my lifelong hobby as a leather crafter due to some not so kind words from my doctors. I can no longer use my hands well enough to work the leather and I'm confined to a wheelchair most of the time now anyway. Which of course brings me to the subject matter. I have for sale a large lot of Leather working books and patterns. Here's a quick list with the retail cost of them now and what I'd like out of them. This would be a tremendously good deal for anyone just starting out and even those that could use a lot of patterns. Here goes...... 12. Heya folks! Newbie here and I'm simply curious as to what reading material ya'll would recommend for a feller who's just getting started in the biz. I'm sure there's a plethora of good books out there to get one started; hoping some old pros may have some suggestions.

    BOOKS AND MORE

In this listing, as I close my leathercrafting adventure, I will list periodicals that we all enjoy. I'm sure that you are all aware of what they look like so have decided that the task of taking pics was more than I could do at the moment. I have the books in small packs and have decided that $2.00 per issue is a fair price so whatever pack you take, will be $2.00 per issue plus shipping via media mail or any other way you prefer to have them shipped. 15. So I'm looking to try my hand at bookbinding from scratch, from printing and folding signatures to attaching wooden boards for the covers, to tooling and connecting the leather binding to the wood. The book that I want to bind is planned to be 8-1/2 by 11inch after folding the signatures, thinking about trying to find some 1/8th inch boards for the covers, and I'm planning on using 1inch leather strips to bind the signatures to and then glue the strips to the boards. I also plan to have a serious amount of tooling to do on the leather. I'm curious about what extra leather I should have around the edges, any recommendations or critiques would also be helpful.
  16. I am seeking advice on selling my leatherwork collection. I attached a list of the books, dvds, stamps, and other items that I hope to sell. Where have you found the best luck in selling your items: this site, Ebay, other sites? Do you recommend grouping items together or selling individually? Any suggestions on getting the best pictures? How do you recommend pricing the items? I'm assuming a few books, like the Home Study Course, are harder to come by but am not sure of it's worth. I was unable to find the record of what I had paid originally. We live 25 miles from town, which only has a post office. We do not have a UPS or FedEx nearby. Any thoughts on how to ship items? Any help, advice, suggestions, comments, or two cents would be appreciated.Thank you. Leatherwork Books and Supplies - Inventory to Sell.doc
  17. Version 3 of my original. I've improved the way the strap loop slides. I'm also really happy with the way the chrome hardware and white stitching compliments the brown leather. A custom version of my bookstrap, made with a longer, wider strap and larger panel in order to accomodate a large art portfolio. A more minimal version. A more modern version I made one night while having beers with a friend. Inspired by the above version. (I grew quite attached to this one. The worst part about making such things is that I want to keep all of them. It has since been sold... I might make another one.)
  18. hello All! My name is Mark Rowney. I have been working and carving leather for 25 years now. I am self taught and still learning. I am passionate about Contemporary rural Art and endeavour to combine my enthusiasm for leather work and evoke my love of nature. I primarily make bespoke leather journal covers and some other original and one-off items. I also paint and sell enough to enable me to buy new hides, JUST! I live and work in the Durham dales, Northern England. My influences are the Bees that sting me, the Midges that bite me and the birds that sing so sweetly. My goal is to understand my soul that I may best illustrate a wonderful life spent in the high meadows and hay fields that surround our old stone farmhouse. I look forward to meeting and hearing from the fellow leather workers that share this imaginative site. As William Morris said...."One should only own what is truly useful or beautiful". I hope you find enjoyment in my work. http://www.rowneyart.com http://rowneyart.blogspot.com

  21. I'm surprised that someone hasn't posted this before (maybe they have) : Project Gutenberg (out of copyright books) has a few books on leather you can download. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/40286 Decoration of Leather by George de Recy - descriptions of various leather techniques http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/41927 A Complete Guide to the Ornamental Leather Work by James Revell - mainly leather flowers http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/43377 Leather by K. J. Adcock - mainly tanning and leather preparation Has anyone else found online old books or patterns worth posting? maybe we can make a list.
  22. I'm curious about some books from films that I've seen, and would like to craft both on the inside and out. The list I have right now includes: The Red Book of Westmarch from The Lord of the Rings The Shepard's Journal from Atlantis: The Lost Empire Journals 1-3 from Gravity Falls I can find photos and reference for the exterior of the books easily, and I am working on blank versions of these, but its the interiors of the books that's a bit more tricky. All of these books are thick, and are full to the brim with content. The problem is finding that content. I know that not all of the content for these books is available to find, and that I'll have to take creative liberties, but I also know that there is information about the content in these books out there. I've begun my research on them, and am filing away images and blog pages, but I wanted to extend my reach to this community as well, since all of these books will be bound in leather. And speaking of binding, for the book binders out there, how would you go about binding these books? Most of them look case-bound, but I'd probably modify them to be bound with a hidden longstitch. What do you folks think?
  23. Hello all. I'm interested in crafting some armour. I've done a fair bit of research and i think i have the general idea, but i'd like to have a good reference book, or How To book on hand to see what else i might need and just for general knoledge, i want to avoid wasting too much leather, considering the cost. any suggestions?
  24. I have made a few leather bound books over the years but had never tried to make the little ones that I keep seeing. Last night I couldn't sleep so I pulled out my scrap suede and leather, some old book pages and tools and started putting stuff together. I also had a lot of little trinkets and such that I added on cause I thought they were cute. Once I started making them I couldn't stop and before I knew it I had a handful done and little scraps of leather and paper all over the place. They are so darn cute! and I had a lot of fun making them. I made little signatures and sewed them in just like making a larger book. I used some wire to make loops to hang them. My mom gave me a handful of gold chains she found at a garage sale last year and I have had them in a drawer wondering what I was going to do with them. They look nice with these little books and give them a more glamorous look. I love when I can take scraps and junk and turn them into something cool. I know this project does not include tooling and lots of cool nifty things but I enjoyed making these and wanted to share. Now to decide if I will put these up on Etsy or save them for spring when the fairs start.
