About Me

Found 14 results

  1. Finished bracelets made from kangaroo lace - 12 strand.
  2. Still pretty new to leather working, but ive been doing tons of research, asking alot of questions and going through tandy scrap leather like crazy, done a few little projects as well to practice tooling, dyeing, laceing, etc. So I've got an ok base to start with and wanting to try my first real project. So my question is... lace on a firefighter radio strap, what would be the problem with that, and is it going to hold up?. Ive been searching the internet, and on here and have found no results with a custom radio strap with lace. So im thinking there has to be a reason. Yes i realize that on the strap itself where it sits on your shoulder would be a bit uncomfortable and probably rub bad. But maybe some on the radio holster, and possibly sections of the strap doesn't seem like a bad idea... i saw on tandy they have whats called "logger lace" which meets NFPA standards (basically approved for fire gear) was going to try and use some of that. Lace on strap would be for decorative purpose. (Leaning more on a plate braid rather than edge for strap because i think it would rub less) Lace on holster would be used to for assembly.. Let me know what yal think.. preferably a fellow firefighter that uses them and has some experience with them. But any thoughts are appreciated! Also. Dyeing logger laces and laces of that type of leather. If anyone has tryed that id love to here what the outcome was... i know latigo is pretty much set on what ever color you buy. But idk about the logger lace.. let me know what yal think! I have pictures of my EO'S strap for a referance and im going to photoshop them to try and show some of the ideas i have for it and put them into a pdf to post on here. Look at it and tell me what you think! Thanks for taking the time to read! imgtopdf_generated_2506171206036.pdf
  3. Question, I've seen many bags with fringe and the edge is braided or whip stitched all together. I'd like to know how this is done, so the fringe is facing front. I did a sample of how I think it's done but need your knowledge to be sure. So, I have the bags edge (if you will/sample) and glued the fringe in place "wrong side" to the back of the bag. I've braided all three together. The fringe is facing front and there are no unfinished edges - looks good....however, I'd like it to lay flater. A bit of wear and it will hang more relaxed...what's your opinion please & thank you so much in advance.
  4. Question, I've seen many bags with a finished edge using the Mexican braid with fringe... How is this process done....thanks for your helpful
  5. Couldn't find this mentioned elsewhere, so thought I would share this Youtube tutorial by Shane Hutchinson (from Abraided Leather) on making your own lace/thong beveller. I knocked up one quickly with things I already had in the garage (block of wood, wooden paint stirrer, utility knife blade). I found it easy to use, accurate and pleasingly fast. Have attached photos of mine below, used on 3mm Kangaroo lace. NB: Due to the depth of my block of wood rather than clamping the blade I just hammered it into the wood. This does halve the life of the blade (as the hammered side is dulled so you can't turn it over) but worth it for me as I found clamping twisted the blade to a strange angle. I used spare blades from my Stanley utility knife, AU$5.98/5 pack. These are available in Carbide which (allegedy) last 5 times longer than a regular blade. Hope someone finds this useful! Cheers, Kristy
  6. I have been asked to make a belt that has a rawhide braid in between the scallops of the belt. I have researched and researched and am unable to figure out how to do the braid. I would be so grateful for help in figuring this out. I have done very little braid work so not real wise on the subject. Thank you.
  7. I made a bolo tie from a shed antler with an instructional how to or DIY video! Please check it out and let me know what you think!
  8. Hey all...question. Using latigo leather for my leashes. On the bolt end for the leash, the leather is so strong its a bit hard sometimes to turn & slip it through the slits i've made. Wondering what folks are using so this slides easier? I do use conditioner but dont want to soften the leather up so much. and I dont want to make the slits too much larger, but if thats the case, i will....any suggestions are much appreciated! thanks in advance.
  9. Hi guys, I'd like to introduce myself: My name is Brandon, I'm from NY and am very interested in leather products. I've always been a fan of the richness and how it adds an air of high quality to anything it touches. I currently work with a jeweler who I am very interested in having help me make custom clasps for leather braided bracelets. The style of braiding is what I'm unsure of. I believe it to be a flat leather lace that is double braided or maybe two seperate rows of double braiding..I would love to create bracelets out of really bright, vibrant colors like seafoam green, lapis, coral, and would love if someone could point me in the direction (after establishing what type of leather lace I need) where I can find it in the colors I'm looking for. I will stop my bumbling now and just attach some pictures for you all. Thank you in advance for your help, I will post finished images of my end product. -- Thanks again, Brandon

  11. This past weekend I made some raw hide using KAWs method for dehairing(it worked pretty good by the way) thanks for that KAW, any way I am now ready to cut it into strings for several different projects, maybe royal reins, bosal, and buttons and I am curious of others opinion on how to cut the hide. It seems like if I take my strap cutter and cut around the hide I would have very little waste, vs cutting out rounds then cutting string. I have even seen where some just cut the hide in straps length ways. Are certain parts better for certain items, I know when making a saddle, saddle makers like certain parts of the hide for different pieces of the saddle. I'm pretty green to this but seems as if it would apply to braiding as well.
  12. Im trying to figure out the math for widths of plaits. I have a 7/8" Diameter tube that I would like to braid. I would ideally like to have strand widths between a quarter and half inch. Is there a calculation that can be used to figure out my options?
  13. I have been a visitor of this site for many years and can usually find the answer to my question without having to post (seems like everything I come across someone else has already figured out) but this one doesn't seem to have been answered before. My father bought a set of rawhide romal reins out of Mexico. The rawhide appears to have been bleached and he can't stand the color so he asked if I could figure something out. I have never worked with rawhide before so I'm unsure of the best way to go about this. I know a lot of people use coffee to dye their strands but this is done before the braiding begins. We both agreed that a similar color would be good if we could get it to take without destroying the reins. My concern is that if I soaked them in coffee the braid on either the body or the buttons would loosen or curl and the reins would be ruined? I also thought spraying or wiping them down might be safer and producer a good result? Lastly, I thought maybe I would dye some rawhide cream then work the conditioner into the reins (since the conditioner is supposed to be safe for finished products)? Has anyone ever tried something like this before that could lend some advice? If not maybe some insight as to what could be expected if I follow any of the outlined ideas above? Any advice would be very much appreciated. I have attached a few pictures of the reins so you can see what I'm working with. Thanks in advance.
  14. I'm trying to make a "semi-choke" (not sure if a correct term) collar for my dog. The idea is to make one slab of heavy duty leather with D-rings on each end, then a braided loop that goes through the D-rings and has a metal O-ring for the leash. The flat part of the collar is pretty straight forward, but the braided loop puzzles me. I've learned how to do a round braid starting from the O-ring, but now I also need to end the braid in the same O-ring to form a loop. It also needs have a certain amount of strength to it to withstand yanks and pulling if the dog doesn't want to cooperate . how do I do that?
