  1. I recently acquired a nice set of 5 mm stitching irons, and of course they needed a case. I dipped into my scraps, and pulled out my cheap fluorescent colored thread (clearance at Tandy's!), and quickly whipped one up. The back is 3-4 mm veg tan, front and strap are 2mm chrome. That ought to keep the irons organized and safe!
  2. Hello. I'm Sheila from Ticino, South Switzerland. I'm a beginner self-taught leather worker. I have a lot to learn, but I'm not afraid by mistakes. I hope to make some good courses as soon I can, for the moment here some of my works. I love to make bags: in the first picture the first one I made as gift for my mom. Now I'm working on my first prototype, almost finished. second picture: A small box and after some eyeglasses case I designed. At the end a keyring. all Giftes. All hand crafted, with the best veg tan leather from Tuscany. I made myself also my cardboard packaging. I hope you like them. Here my Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/orikawa.atelier_leather
  3. Chinese 4 mm pricking irons Goods Japan 3 mm diamond irons
  4. Version 4 of the case design. I think a bit oversized, very difficult to stitch together, particularly the gusset, which took nearly 6 hours. Of the 5 designs I prototyped, this is the one I liked the most. I am certainly open to constructive criticism, particularly on construction techniques, as the next one is to be made out of more expensive glazed Alligator. YinTx A couple more showing the inside, etc.
  5. Ning Bags for the win! My wife's family has an heirloom, a Masonic sword with a leather carrying case, about 100 years old or so, belonging to a great-grandfather. When it came to my brother in law last year, after a death in his family, I was asked to restitch the leather case. The original thread was likely cotton or linen, and had nearly all deteriorated. So I matched the original thread with some Ritza synthetic thread (no reason to keep the "authentic" thread type, since it's not really a "historic" piece), and re-stitched the entire case. But there was turn lock on the case, which was missing the turning piece. I could not locate a match -- all the ones I could locate online (The Buckle Guy, Ohio Travel Bag, etc.) were 1 inch or larger, none 3/4 inch in width like this one. But today, on a random search, I struck gold, and I found the turn lock in the right size and the right color. The pieces will fit seamlessly in the current slots on the leather, and the case will be completely restored.
  6. Hi all, Not a repost I promise. I made one of these for myself a couple of weeks ago and had some spare time, so made a small batch as stock pieces with a few design changes. I was not particularly happy with the stitching first time round so went for a much tighter stitch on these, which goes around the bottom corners much better and is generally more appropriate for a smaller case anyway I think. The overall proportions have also been very slightly tweaked. These are all wet formed directly around the knife, and hand tooled/stitched etc. Colours are fiebings pro, black, mahogany and dark brown, with natural veg tan liners. I hope you like them Cheers Alex
  7. Hi all This is a leather Swiss army knife belt pouch, made to replace my old faithful victorinox one bought around 10 years ago. The case has been wet formed directly around the knife, hand stitched, and tooled with a little bit of western acanthus stuff. The main reason the old one failed was because of the velcro flap, so this one has a press stud instead, which I think is better. The back piece has a veg tan liner, I always tend to do this and it is as much to hide any horrible dye blotches as it is to make a nicer product... Not the greatest stitching in the world on this one, the main offenders being the horrible spacing around the bottom corners, but as this was for me and not a customer i'm not too fussed about that. Also please ignore the business card, this is not an advert, but these are the photos I have. I hope you like it, Cheers Alex
  8. Here's the front section, with an Angelus Burgundy background.
  9. I as recently approached by a church member who ive made knife pouches for and he is asking me to make him a pen/pencil/marker case for his work. The design seems simple enough but ive never run across any templates for it and am wondering if anyones made something like this and has a template or pointers. So it has to be tall enough for a pen to stand straight up inside the case and fit about 5 pens/markers. He wants it open so no need for a clasp or anything. It will have a belt loop which I already know how to apply. I am thinking I can do this out of a solid square but not sure if it is best stiched or laced. If anyone has done something like this before let me know. Thank you.
  10. Just finished this saddle scabbard. Scabbard 1.docx Scabbard 2.docx
  11. Here is a very simple pattern for clip-on sunglasses. Easy project for beginners. Decided to replace a case I made about 20 years ago and have been carrying in my shirt pocket everyday. Copied from a cheapo case. Used some embossed alligator from Tandy, and since I still have some, will just duplicate the last one! I was surprised at how long it lasts with no treatment or care at all. Print the PDF full size, fold in half along the centre line (CL) so it comes out symmetrical! Tom Clip-on Case.pdf

  14. Here's one of my tattoo "Flash Card" wallets. I've done many over the last few years and this is one of my favorites.
  15. Hi there, I've signed up for my first leather class and need to bring tools. I know some of you clever people have some great ways to travel with your stuff! Im also not sure what tools to bring? It's a figure carving class. I was looking at an ammo case and my husband said he''d make me a small wood block for a tool holder. I'd love your ideas and pics if you have them. Thank you!
  16. Thought I’d share my first attempt at making a case. It’s based on the Utility Case shown in The Art of Making Leather Cases Vol 2. page 60 with different dimensions. The handle, Handle No. 20 page 23 (same volume). Oak leaf carving on left side panel based on CitzenKates post on this site: Demo: Oak Leaves. Only experience with leather working I have is that a couple of weeks ago I picked up the Tandy Deluxe Leather Carving kit. Got tired of flowery bookmarks and coasters quite rapidly and wanted to really push myself. Laid out/measured up the cutting patterns in Sketchup before hand. Ran into trouble trying to figure out how long to make the handles and couldn’t find any advice or comment on handle length in the above-mentioned Stohlman book; upon assembly discovered the handles are a fair bit too short! Thankfully still usable, but it’d be more comfortable for each handle to have been 2 to 4 inches longer. Not sure if there’s any way I can address this after the fact though. Also discovered that I hadn’t thought through where the latch would end up… did get a latch but didn’t lay out the location beforehand so if I were to attach a latch it would end up smack dab in the middle of the carving on the front panel. Now looking for other strategies to close the lid - almost thinking maybe snaps? And the next fairly major oversight is that I mounted the handle shield too to high. This results in the inability to close the lid fully since the flap hits the D-rings. Am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to modify/remedy this issue? Can see from the photos I have some more burnishing to do on that top panel… Critique, criticism, suggestions, modifications to improve the case, additional finishing, etc. much appreciated.
  17. I finally broke down and got myself a high quality tool, a Barry King Edger. The problem with nice tools is that I really want to keep it protected when not in use. This one in particular likes to roll well, so I need something I can stash it in right away when I am done using it. I am guessing the end product will be similar to a sheath, maybe with a clamshell like opening so I can snap it shut for storage. I have not been able to find any threads on the topic, so I just wanted to ask and see if anyone had any samples or solutions they like for protecting a single tool like an edger. Thank you, Andy
  18. Here is a sheath I made this past weekend. This is my 5th project I have made. I used a scrap leather piece that I got in a remnant bag. It holds my Buck 110
  19. Hello friends! So I have a question for the group - I’m interested in making a cover for my guitar amp out of leather (of course LOL) and I’m curious to know what leather weight would you recommend? If I tool it, I will use veg-tan, but what other leather would you recommend? My design includes a slot on top for the handle, and an open bottom with a belt across it to hold it in place. Since this is for my extension speaker cabinet, I also want to make it sturdy enough for me to check it into baggage check-in when I have to fly it (same leather weight as a suitcase I suppose). for you guitar heads the cab dimensions are the same as a 5E3 fender deluxe. thanks y’all - looking forward to your suggestions!
  20. Hello again! My brother makes a lot of high-end pens and wanted me to try making a pouch for some of them. I took more time than I thought but turned out fairly well. Thanks for taking a look! -Ryan
  21. I'm a big knife fan, one of my favorite patterns is the Case Peanut. I currently have 4 of them. This is my second molded item...a pocket case for this small pocket knife..... This is a synthetic purple model....and the slip pays homage to that by being dyed purple inside. Dark green stitching. Pretty pleased with it. Started a work-carry molded shesth with my younger son today for his Leatherman tool. That'll be my most complex item yet.
  22. Hello. I'm still pretty new to leatherworking. I would like to make an iPad case for a friend. I have ideas for a design, but I don't know how I would add stability and protection. The cases you can buy from the store have a hard inner sheet under a thin, fake leather. Does anyone know what that hard sheet is made of, or what might work as a substitute? If all else fails, I might just use heavier leather without an inner sheet. Thanks!
  23. Just finished this briefcase and thought I'd share. Purpleheart and aluminum handle with a cotton vintage cloth lining. I tried to keep this one crisp and clean with as little fuss as possible. It's a lovely balanced bag to hold. The handle pivots very freely on the bag so no matter how you hold or wear it , it always stays vertical. By swinging the handle towards the back it creates a clever stand for the briefcase. Comments and criticisms are welcome.
  24. I picked up a new smartphone a little while back, so I needed to make another case. Relatively proud of this one as I tried a couple new techniques on this one that I'll be using in my future work. Critiques welcomed!
