Silverd posted a topic in Saddle & Tack Maker GalleryHello, I'm just getting started in making minor saddle repairs and have an English Riding client who needs new stirrup leathers. As with most things in the leather and especially tack making world, what initially may look simple generally is not! Im finding that stirrup leathers are made with a nylon liner and some with not. My mentor / saddle maker has informed me that the straps are typically made from a single strap of Stirrup Butt...only available from Abbey England that I have found, but i have not pursued German suppliers. And its expensive! What is the right solution? Are matrix straps with nylon strapping sewn in also made using Stirrup Butt or a lesser cost leather? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated Silverd
charlescrawford posted a topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife SheathesSo I am getting over being sick as a dog. Another sinus and asthma issues.... I got to play around with the thin air press my wife found and got me from Roar Rocket for molding holsters. This thing is awesome! Love it makes molding so much easier. It's normal use is for veneering and making skateboards. Anyway... so with my blueguns I have been using a pencil taped to the top with clear gorilla tape as a site channel. Is this a best practice or is there something better I should be using? Some of my holsters will have safety straps but others will not so I want a nice snug fit hence the reason we spent $60 on the thin air press from Roar Rocket. Just want to make sure I am doing things smart and not an outdated way if you know what I mean.
Tool Bag Design Update
OrthodoxMason posted a topic in ArtHey all, I wanted to provide an update for the leather tool bag work that I am doing. A number of you have provide much appreciated feedback and advise, for which I am quite grateful and indebted. I elected to write up my update as a series of brief posts each attached to an appropriate photo. Due to the file size format of this forum, I am going to link to the Imgur album that I created. Hopefully, this format works well for everyone and remains in keeping with the forum. TOOL BAG UPDATE Best regards, Patrick

Any Quality Production Saddles?
archer55 posted a topic in Saddle ConstructionHello. I'm sure more senior forum contributers are tired of this topic, but... I have been combing this site for information about saddle quality and what constitues quality contruction. I know most experts here hold a low opinion of production saddles, and seemingly for good reason. I have been looking for a quality saddle in a 16.5" seat with "FQH" bars/tree with a budget of $2250 (firm), with no luck. Got close, but no luck. My question for all you saddle makers and repairers: In your experience, are there ANY production saddles that show more elements of quality construction, than what is normally expected/observed? For example, I have been eyeing some Reinsman Ranch saddles - http://www.horsesaddleshop.com/reinsman-ranch-saddles.html The shop manager told me that they use 20 guage seat strainers with built up leather ground/shaped seats, Hermann Oak grade 2 and occasionally grade 3 leather, stainless hardware, Precision Kevlar-reinforced trees w/lifetime warranty, etc. The guy was honest enought to tell me that they do use roofing nails (sparringly) in construction some aspect of the saddle. So what say you? ANy good production saddles out there? I will mostly be using it for hunting, trail riding, and maybe some light roping. I also ride dressage, so don't mind a a balanced seat either. Thanks.
Cylindrical Lens Case
MorningStarL posted a topic in How Do I Do That?I live in mountains with hiking trails. I like my hands as free as possible, and I'm thinking of making a lens case with a strap on it: a cylinder with a bottom and a lid attached with a small strap because I'm good at losing things. I'm not sure how to attach a bottom to a cylinder. As I'm typing I've decided to go look at some arrow quivers -- but good suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.
