  1. I have a question regarding the durability of heated edge paint on bridle leather. I'm making a bunch of dog collars out of mostly Wickett & Craig & Chahin bridle, some are made of Chahin Holster Strap Leather. I burnished most of them, but I'm not happy with the look of the burnished edges on some colours (i.e. Chestnut). I dyed the edges and its not the technique I'm not happy with, they are round and smooth and shiny. Its a personal preference. I have been experimenting with Vernis Edge paint using a cheaper version of the Regad Filiteuse on other projects, like bags and wallets. I really like the look of it. But I am wondering if it will hold up to the abuse a dog collar has to go through. The collars are going to be the first items I'm actually starting a business with and are going to be for sale in 2 stores. So obviously I want to stand behind my products and not get complaints about the edge paint peeling off... Any advice would be appreciated.. Thanks
  2. Finally finished this up today. Took half a year of Sundays it seems, but ready. 1" wide strap, Hermann Oak leather, Fil Au Chinois Thread, solid steel hardware. Learned a thing from @RockyAussie's watch strap tutorial, and tried to apply it here. Thanks for that! Plenty of little mistakes, and things I'd do differently (like only use that style of buckle with very thin flexible leather), but I think it will be serviceable! From what I understand, LuLu is a girly girl boxer with white fur, so I think she'll like this style. YinTx
  3. Greta with a new collar, looking very contented!
  4. Hi All, just wanted to post something. Have been lurking around for the last couple of months. Still very new to leather craft. Im about 2 months in. Here is one of my most recent collars. It was an experiment and its not too bad. The dye work is a bit poor on the coloured parts, especially the black marks ?(I have since got hold of some leather paint instead of using dye), so hopefully the next ones will be cleaner. Hand aged hardware, rabbit fur accent and padded. All hand stitched. As a total beginner I'm pretty happy with it.
  5. Do any of you guys or gals use a semi-tubular rivet with a back side washer? If so do you know of anyone that sales the rivet and washer as a set? See the six rivets in the example image where the leather is folded for the buckle. www.all-about-pitbull-dog-breed.com/bmz_cache/9/92f5f8979e93e74bb6b3383ef7b99e9d.image.550x550.jpg
  6. I am looking for hunting emblem conchos to put on dog collars. Specifically a rabbit and crown and hunter. Or anything suitable.
  7. Just knocked out a few more collars for the web store I am launching soon. I had a mate take some photos for me, as is his hobby. These are his 'messing around on Sunday Arvo' shots... which are instantly better than anything I have done! Lol Anyway. Burgundy latigo, about 3.6mm. Edges are hand burnished. Riveted with brass saddlers rivets. Hardware is all solid cast brass. Enjoy!
  8. Hey guys I'm working on my first big project where I'm looking to make around 50-100 dog collars. I'm planning on doing 3/4 colours and 4 different sizes. I'm already designing the template for each and thinking about making a jig that will hold each strap to ensure that holes are punched quickly and accurately. I have a few questions however ; 1. Do you think 3.5mm shoulder would be ok? 2. What dyes do you think I should use? I like more muted colours and have experience at oil dyes. However would these leak or have bad affect on dogs? 3. Who finish to weather seal it? Bees wax? (I have blocks of this) Acrylic Resolene? Or anything else that wouldn't harm a dog. thanks for your help
  9. Below is my latest creation made with exceptional bling from RaySouth and the outstanding stitching of my CB3500 from none other than CowboyBob! Thanks much, gentlemen, for your guidance and superior merchandise.
  10. Just a simple dog collar I knocked out on the weekend for my border collie. He seems pretty happy with it! Latigo leather from Tandy, about 3.8mm thick (9-10 oz). Solid brass hardware, and solid brass rivets. Only the best for my boy!
  11. Here is another collar I made. I am SO pleased with my CB-3500 from CowboyBob. It does amazing things, I'm just along for the ride! This is my first attempt at rolled leather. I looked at an old collar I got back in the early 90s and tried to copy it as best I could. I am pleased with how it turned out. This CB-3500 makes things that look really hard as easy as cutting warm butter! Pic was before I burnished. TY
  12. Hey guys, Recently I've had a request from a friend to make him a dog collar and a leash for his wedding, for his dog to bring them the wedding rings :D I couldn't find white leather yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to paint natural veg tanned leather white, whith like an acrylic paint, a spray, and then apply some lacker to avoid smudging and cracking. I'd aprreciate any tips!! Thank you, Lourenço
  13. Hello all, I'm attempting to taper a collar for a customer, but as I've never done it before my first couple attempts were a disaster- uneven and ugly. Does anyone have any tips on how to taper? Tools I should be using? Thank you!
  14. Here's the 1st collar I attempted to sew. I remember how discouraged I was. Thinking it was going to be impossible to ever produce nice collars. But every mistake is a lesson. My stitch length was cutting strap it was so close. Letters look horrific. Foam I used was too thick. I could go on and on, but I don't like laughing at myself. Post your 1st project and a current item that shows with practice and passion you can always improve to better outcomes. Malik
  15. I am closing my pet collar and leash business and the entire contents of my workshop has to go. I have a good supply of hardware (collar and leash buckles, rivets, misc), fluids (angelus leather dye, big bottle of resolene, small bottles of Angelus leather paint, etc), hand tools (small selection of tooling/carving stuff, hole punches, rotary cutter, letter stamp sets, etc), a few larger tools (leather splitter, lace cutter), and leather (latigo and tooling, from 2/3 up to 9/10, most leather is Hermann Oak, also most leather is cut into strips for collars or 4" strips for easy storage and accessibility). Also have misc other stuff, like mailing envelopes, books and patterns. Located in Portland, OR, and willing to ship or deliver if you are close enough. Even leather will ship pretty easily since it is cut into strips and will fit in boxes nicely. Please let me know if you are interested in more details, and I will work on my inventory so I know exactly what I have and set asking prices. Thanks for your time!
  16. This was my first attempt at a dog collar. I track with dogs, and wanted to make a "fancy" tracking collar for an upcoming blood tracking event. Being my first attempt, I made several amateur mistakes. My stitch line was WAY too close to the edge, and was horrible on the back side. This was my first attempt at beveling with a tool, and it wasn't until I finished that I realized I was using it backwards...lol. I also had some spacing issues with my letter stamping, and didn't realize it until I had it stitched to the front piece. Now for the good parts. This collar is two layers of hand-stitched 2" wide, 9 oz leather. It is wide and stiff, which is important in a good tracking collar so that it doesn't impinge on the dog's neck when pulling on a track. It also has a brass swivel and a little bling to keep it girlie. I was wanting to play around with this "geometric flower" pattern that I had seen on a belt. I free handed this one, and it came out reasonably well. This was a primer for a belt I wanted to craft for my wife. I worked out most of the bugs, and the belt turned out pretty good IMO .
  17. The collar is upside down in the pic, but I turned it over the right way now. You get the idea anyway.
  18. Hey guys, First collar and first post on this section….. I made it for a friends dog, what do you guys think? If I were to have someone ask me to make one, what would I charge? They wanted to pay for it but I would not take it, bought me lunch instead. Allan
  19. Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I posted anything, so I figured I'd do a quick update while the coffee is brewing. This is just something I wanted to do. I've been doing a lot of "production" type stuff and I needed to take a break and do something that would challenge my artistic side. I like it and I look forward to making more art pieces. This is a mouse pad I made for a Jewish friend. Happy Hanukkah! A fun journal cover I made. I've been watching a ton of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones lately. Does it show? Simple folding money clip/wallet. A nice dress belt. An ex-serviceman contacted me about making this wallet for him. I was really excited to do it, told him not to worry about a deposit, and got after it. I tried to ask him what he wanted in the banner and he never got back to me. After it was finished, he never got back to me. Still haven't heard from him. Valuable lesson learned. A Harley belt I did for a co-worker. The eagle was done with mostly a modeling tool. It was my first time using one and now I realize how indispensable they are. My pups Christmas gift. My brothers Christmas gift. The knife was something my late father gave him. Making this belt and sheath was really special for me. A couple more of the folding wallet money clips. These are also special to me. They are two of six items ordered from me to be carried in a local retail boutique. First time my stuff is being carried in a store. And now I'm in the market for a sewing machine. Business has really picked up and I'm struggling to keep up with orders and work a full time job. A sewing machine would really help me out and broaden my horizons a bit too. I'd love to start doing costumes and bags. Any suggestions? Any helpful hints on my work? Thanks for looking!!
  20. Hello Everyone, Does anyone know where I can purchase strong chain for martingale dog collars. I would like the chain already made with the dee rings. Would like stainsteel if possible, something heavy duty for the stronger dogs. Thanks for help in advance. Lori LeatherLori@aol.com
  21. Hi All, I'm looking for information on how to make a dog collar sturdy enough for a St Bernard. Ive seen many dog collars in the collars section, and Ive seen a number of methods to fix the hardware. However, I'm not sure If any special precautions or construction techniques should be used for such a big dog. My first thoughts would be to have the buckle and D loop hand sewn in and then to use rivets. I was also considering 10oz or 3.5 - 4mm thick leather 2 inches wide. I'd be interested to hear your comments on this matter. Thank you.
  22. Hi all I live in South Africa, and have just moved from the coast up to awesome Johannesburg! Joining a leather working site is probably a bit premature, seeing as my entire leather work experience consists of a lanyard and a failed phone cover, but I'm hoping to learn a lot from this site. I'm interested in making my dog a leather dog collar and a leash, but being new to Johannesburg, I have no idea where to look for the leather strips or the hardware. Any fellow Joburg'ers out there who could point me in the right direction? I'm in Randburg, North West. Thanks, and it's great to join such a friendly community :-)
  23. One set I made for my crew and one for a good friend on mine who is one of the creators of the Shorty Bull. One leash has the tail attached...the other just has accents. Malik
  24. I've been working on an illuminated dog collar for use at night. It works really well and is extremely bright at night, works off a 9 volt battery. I want to develop a different switching method to turn it on and off but all in all it works good. Kevin.
