  1. Hey everyone! I'm so grateful to this forum! I've learned so much in the last year or so that I've been working with leather. It started out as a hobby to support my 8 Dogo Argentinos collars, gear, toys, and leashes...buy last holiday season I created a Jingle Bell Collar out of BioThane (Thank God for my leather working skills as that stuff is the devil to work with over and over...) I prefer Leather but man people love that collar and so I've also been commissioned to create some leather collars for dogs. I like giving gifts to folks as well. Sharing is a gift for me!!! I'd love some tips and advice if yall have any? When I've needed help, I come here and always find my answer. Thankful for all of you! I'll post some pics of the leather collars I've made. They're not typical... but then...neither am I lol. Thank you much! Keri Costello www.smtdogo.com
  2. Hi all. I hope you are all well in this crazy time! We have recently got a 10 month old rescue cat called Ruby. She is now an inside cat due to lots of traffic, bird life and stray cats in the area etc. I am taking her outside on a little nylon harness that I bought. It does keep her safely under control but it is a real pain to get on her and I think the thin straps might dig in as well. I am looking at trying to make a harness for her from leather &/or other materials. If people have made harnesses for dogs or cats, can they tell me what to use I do have some calf veg tan as well as some softer synthetic pieces, I don't know if they would rub or be too hot in our 100+deg heat at Dubbo NSW. Any ideas on patterns, leather or other materials, closures, lining etc would also be welcome. I like ones that you step the cat into (jacker style) rather than trying to get her head in a loop or tangle with straps like her current one. Ruby is a small slim cat so it would have to be rather narrow to allow her freedom of movement. This is her in her synthetic harness enjoying the weeds in our garden!. Thanks for any guidance.
  3. Hi everyone! This is my first project - lots of learning happened here! Plenty of things to tweak for next time. Sally competes in a bunch of dog sports, so I wanted something that's quick and easy to get on and off but is going to be comfortable for an excited dog to wait her turn in. This is roughly patterened off a coursing lead, photos attached of how it works. I'll add some chicago screws next to the dee rings when they arrive next week, and I'll swap the blue rope out for a colour that suits it a bit better once I get a splicing fid - the shopping list just keeps getting longer... I'm also going to add a removable martingale loop, so she can wear it as a collar for walks in town - just a pain to get a martingale collar over those ears so the slip lead is better for competition.
  4. Here is a collar I made for our Dachshund from English bridle. It is a bit over built, but that is how I wanted it. fully lined, including the strap, with 2-3 oz veg tan. Had a bit of trouble with the edge kote sticking. It might be a bad batch.
  5. Hi y’all - I’ve been an off-and-on lurker on these forums for a while, & now I have a specific question! I’ve been working on coming up with & testing a solid dog collar design for my goofball German Shepherd. I keep having issues with my collars stretching. For the most recent one, I used a midweight veg tan leather with a softer leather backing, & it was better than previous designs, but still ended up stretching significantly. Should I go to a heavier weight veg? Try backing the veg with harness or latigo leather? Are there certain finishes or treatments that would help stiffen the leather & provide water protection? All ideas & experience appreciated! I want to come up with a design that can be tooled on the outside but still hold up to all the wear that a dog will put a collar through. Thanks! Kambra
  6. Just wondering if anyone out there would have a pattern for a Dog Harness, with & without a chest plate. I have never made one even though they look easy enough to make, I dont want to stuff up along the way as it is for a customer. This is the dog it will be going on. Cheers Damien
  7. I read so much about the different types of leather, weights of same, and more, about best leather to use and leather not to use for dog collars, dog leads, harness for pets, etc; and would like to know the feelings of those on the site as to what they really feel is best to use for these products. I have heard of some folks using bellies, others that say no bellies, some saying backs and others questioning that as well. Bellies stretching to much, backs sometimes a bit rigid, and more. Would really like to get some opinions as to best all around leather to use, methods of fastening, and any other information that might be of benefit for those of us making such items. I have made a few without problems and have addressed a few safety issues that involve strength of leads and fasteners used for various collars and leads. I may be correct in my thinking, based on my experience but others I'm sure, have great information they could share with us on the site. Hope I receive a lot of response and know that there are many of you that are very talented and have produced some magnificent items that I hope you will share. God Bless. Ray
  8. He'll fellow leather workers. I've been pottering with leather for a couple of years and have taught myself everything I get wrong! The wonders of you tube! Below is a selection of things I've done.
  9. I was wondering what you guys would suggest for finishing/waterproofing a dog collar. So far I've only made items that won't really see much heavy use outdoors and I've been happy using super sheen on them(purses and small cases and such), I'm looking to make a collar for a working lab, so it's going to get wet and see a fair bit of use. I have super sheen, acrylic resolene, and feibings snow proof paste, could I use the snow proof paste as a finish in itself? or should I put it on top of one of the other finishes? I wouldn't want to use neatsfoot oil because I plan to colour it and it turns everything pretty dark. And could any one suggest how to protect the back side of the collar? I was thinking of sewing two pieces of leather together back to back to get the right thickness, could I use the same finish then on the back? Any help on this would be appreciated! Denene
  10. I have been a silent participant on leatherworker.net for years now. I thought it would finally be a good time to introduce myself and show off a little bit of my work. I learned how to work with leather while I worked at Paco Collars in Berkeley, CA. I recently moved to Cambridge and have been working on my craft. I set up my little studio where I hang out with my awesome dog, Aloo and make cool stuff. I mostly create dog collars, dog tags, pendants, bracelets, and belts. I would love to have some feedback from fellow leather workers. 11. Hi y'all! Attached is my finished first attempt at figure carving as well as incorporating the Mexican Basketweave lacing technique. I learned a lot during this process mainly what not to do next time. I.e. I will make rounded corners on the leather canvas so the lacing will cover them nicely and tightly. Is there anyway to get the lace closer together? Does it depend how I space the lacing slits? I will always be my toughest critic but I am very happy with how "Buddy" turned out. Like I said before, I've taken notes on things that I will change or improve on in the next project. Feedback is welcomed. Happy crafting! Brett C.

  13. Hi, This is my first leatherwork, a collar for my dog. Leather strap is 3mm thick veg tanned leather dyed with vinegaroon, lining is sheep leather 1,2mm thick, veg tanned and already dyed fawn when bought. It is handstitched. I'm aware to advices and critique.
  14. I have been using gum trag to finish the edges on all my other products, and it works alright. I was considering trying out fiebings saddle soap instead, to see how it works, but I recently heard that some animals might be allergic to glycerine, and I will be making some dog collars. So, does fiebings saddle soap have glycerine in it? Is it true that some animals might be allergic to it? If anyone has had any experiences with this, that would be very helpful. Also, as always, if there are any better/safer methods, feel free to advise! Thanks Zayne
  15. The collar is upside down in the pic, but I turned it over the right way now. You get the idea anyway.
  16. Hi there, I am looking for a custom collar for my german shepherd dog... and possibly my two dogs not far down the road. I am looking for a craftsman that is able to do something like this: I want a different concept, but I mean in terms of leather working type. I'm really not all that creative, so I'm not entirely closed to a style like that. I want an arthurian legend themed collar so if you think you can nail the concept I give you whether by that type of work or something even that is more simple without all the etching and just... like... pendants on it or something. Before we start collaborating I would like some sort of references or if you have some sort of shop to link me to it so I know my money is going into what I asked for haha.
  17. Does anyone have a template for a dog harness? I just need a template with the calculations for adjusting sizes. I would like a normal harness for going on a walk no special uses. Yes I have tried looking at a normal harnesses and getting the measurements. I just wasn't happy with the outcome and don't know how to figure out sizing for other dogs. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

  19. Hi, we are getting an English bulldog pup NeXT week, but as they grow fast to an adult size, I would love to have made a personalized dog collar, preferably a dogcollar in a thick and padded collar. I have many ideas an wishes, but perhaps we could come to an agreement as to how we want it made and prize. Hope you will make contact With us.
