I made these two folios not so long ago. They have been very nice to have about and are strong and protective. The larger one is for an A4 document folder, the smaller one is for an A5 visual diary. They were both made for personal use in a creative storm. Veg tan leather, stained with an 'antique' oil then kangaroo lacing edges using a round braid. Both were then pyrographed and painted with iridescent paint. This paint is super fun. Changes in appearance depending on the direction of the light source.

Hello everyone. I hope you're doing well. I'm hoping for some advice in solving my zip installation problems as shown below. This is the first zip I've fitted, and although it turned out ok, it's just ok, and needs to be better. In brief, and for some background, the case you see below was hand stitched with a 2oz leather exterior, a stiffener board, and then a veg tan lining of approx 3oz. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice as to how best to fit a zipper that wraps around the sides of a product, specifically where the zipper and product meet at 90 degrees. More specifically, I'm looking for advice as to how to tackle corners in this situation. I realise in my model that I've attached the zip to close to the edge of the product at the corners, which explains why the gap between the front and back cover are not even all the way around. This I can solve in version two. What I'm not sure about is how to avoid those puckers / pleats at the corners. When I examine commercially available products like this, I notice that there do not seem to be any pleats at the corners, and the zipper fits (in many cases) perfectly. Secondly, when making something like this, how do you all ensure that the outer and inner components align perfectly, so that your stitches are equidistant from the edges? In my case, I pre-marked my stitches, punch a few using my awl, and used a handful of needles to align the components. This was semi-successful. Does anyone have a better solution? I've often been able to solve problems like this by finding a YouTube video or two showing a professional making something similar. This time however I'm stuck for resources. Help! One final view of the left side. The pen holder is visible, and you can also see that the bottom of the case tapers. This is done to allow the folio to sit better on a desktop when its propped up on the rolled cover. During the design phase I had made sure the rear pocket would be large enough that the taper would not force the writing pad to rise up out of the back.© ©BarkingRooster 2014 / Adam Taylor

I made the toggle fastening mechanism from some pieces of scrap leather laminated into a strip which i then sanded down to a cylinder shape and burnished up to a glossy finish, before drilling two holes for the thong to pass through. The thong is long enough to pass right around the case and loop back over the first toggle. A second toggle was used to pull up against the first allowing it to stay firmly held in place. Asked to make a business folder that could be used with an iPad, and this is the result. Designed to be used during showroom presentations, so needed to be comfortable to hand hold whilst showing videos. Other requirements were a phone pocket, a slot for business cards and a storage compartment for holding a writing pad and loose pages. I also found out the client was left-handed, which informed quite a few design decisions including the layout of the technology and even the placing of the pen holder on the left side! I'm happy to say my client is delighted with her iPad Case. (and i'm very proud of it too.)© ©BarkingRooster 2014 / Adam Taylor

My first commission derived from my website, this folio was designed as a gift for a Poetry student to carry her studies securely. Several discussions regarding the design lead to this finished piece. The leather is handstitched veg-tan, coloured with many blended layers of fiebings British Tan and Dark Brown. As the thong around the case was part of the brief, i decided to use a tag with my logo as an adjustable toggle to help hold the folio closed. I'm very happy with the ned product, and more to the point so was my client!© ©BarkingRooster.co.uk 2013
