  1. My wife and I have a leather bag making business (well, I should say "had"). We ran our handmade leather and waxed canvas bag business for 6 years and we were super successful and had a wonderful time doing it. It got too big for us to continue at the rate that we were and also keep our full time careers. We either had to go all in and quit our careers with health insurance, job security and 401k's or become full time bag makers. I know we made the right choice, at 50 years old, to continue with our careers. If we had done this in our 20's or 30's we would have risked it all and continued to pour our hearts and souls into our business. So, we are selling ALL our tools, materials, equipment and stuff. We would love to see it all go to other makers and creators. leatherandcanvasbusinessforsale.com
  2. They're considered "unsalable" and not carried by most leather suppliers (and for good reason), but are the almost point-for-point historical equivalent once a little processing is done for something I need. Any ideas? (Tannery guys? If you're seeing this, I'm serious and I know what I'm asking for.) (Cannot use wet-blue, sorry)
  3. Put my hand up at an auction last week, bought 4 tons of leather from a Leather Factory in Lynn Ma that made high fashion handbags, portfolios and other leather goods for the travel and fashion industry. Really an amazing collection of Weights, tanning methods colors and textures. Small scraps to whole hides, various species. I am not an expert in identifying leather so if you are in the area please bring your expertise and come check it out. Prices as low as $2 per pound and $2 to $7 per square foot depending on weight finish and condition. When I say some thing for everybody I am not exaggerating. Nubec, latigo, prints, raw, oil, colors chrome etc. You can see photos and message me here at FB market place. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/386611275340297 or call or txt at 6o3 fivefive3 l49five

  5. Hello, found a box of leather hides in a salvage store and they have a musty, mildew smell. I would like to be able to use them. Is there a way to get rid of the smell?
  6. It has been the craziest uphill battle to find high quality such as Horween in Canada at a decent price so that's why I decided one day to take the wheel myself and help everyone out. Purchasing leather online is one of the scariest things to do because you don't know what it will be like in person so I did my best to take as much worry out of the process as I could. I hope this is seen by people who went through what I did and understand the frustration! However thank you for taking the time to read this, I have attached a link so that anyone can come browse what we have to offer! https://www.oaleathersupply.com/ Take care!
  7. I've been scouring this site for information on industrial sewing machines. I'm looking for a machine to do rugging for taxidermy. It needs to go through 2-6 layers of 11-18oz felt and the hide (bear, coyote, etc). I have previously used industrial sewing machines for garments, so these heavy duty machines are new to me. From what I've read on this site I'd like to try find a Consew 206RB-5 (or any subclass with reverse) or a Cowboy machine, maybe the 3200. I'm open to other machines that have a reverse and large capacitity bobbin. Before I make the plunge can anyone give me some feed back on what walking foot machine would be good for me or should I be looking for something with a rolling foot? Should I find something to sew up to 1/2" thickness or is that overkill?
  8. Hello all, Does anyone know of any tanneries left in Canada? I'm specifically looking for veg tanned, but it would be interesting to know even if chrome tanned only. Side quest: I'm also looking for a weaving mills in Canada that make canvas. it seems like there is absolutely no industries left in canada except petrol, wood, stones and wheat.
  9. Hi Everyone, I have been slowly working my way into a better quality of tooling leather, unfortunately the price increases as well. I have been pretty partial to the European Bends from tandy. The quality of leather is very good with little to no flaws in the leather. My question is, i am looking for a comparable quality of tooling leather for a lower cost. What does everyone use for tooling leather? Thank you KB Custom leather
  10. While researching suppliers, it's a bit tricky sometimes to tell whether a supplier or warehouse is suitable for you. Some require a minimum order size, may be online only, and may not have a way of viewing what you're buying (e.g. ebay). With this in mind, I wanted to write a short review of my experience at suppliers so that others might benefit. A.W. Midgley and Son is a UK supplier (website http://www.awmidgley.co.uk ) based in Cheddar, in the south west. It's reasonably accessable from Bath, Bristol, and is just over an hour's drive from where I live. On the website they say they are happy for customers to call at the warehouse, so I gave them a visit. Google/satnav directed me to the buisness park (BS27 3EB) easily, and they are located towards the end of the park - just keep driving and looking, a couple of turns later you should see it on the right - there is a small carpark for visitors. On opening the door, you walk straight into the warehouse - a veritable playground of leather hides - in a hundred different colours and patterns. https://plus.google.com/photos/104400411479647274773/albums/6028107499498037585 We were met by a very nice chap, I think his name may be Will (from http://mirjamidesign.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/luxurious-leather.html). He was extremely helpful and knowledgable, and although I had a vague idea of what I wanted (some thin veg-tan natural, maybe coloured) he helped by showing me several natural veg-tan skins and explaining a lot. He also grabbed a huge stack of mixed single veg-tan shoulders, and went through them, one by one - explaining a bit about the different types. With his help, I chose 3 coloured veg-tan shoulders and a natural veg-tan calf hide. Pricing was very good too, and they seem very happy to give even the casual hobbyist a great customer service. They seem to have a pretty wide variety of hides, different weights/thickness, and plenty of colours. They also have pretty large stocks of popular (e.g. blacks and browns) - if you wanted a larger order. I would definitely recommend a visit for anyone in the south west - you're bound to find something nice, and I am definitely coming back for more in the future. Great place.
  11. I'm now pleased to offer Genuine Leather 20" X 20" panels in my store. These panels are perfect for crafting! Be sure to view both listings to view all available colors. https://www.etsy.com/listing/217845828/20-x-20-genuine-leather-panels
  12. It is so great to join this forum and get a chance to meet others with like interests. I love leather and my current hobby is upholstery and reupholstering old furniture. I've started my hardest project to date an old wing back chair I've attached a picture of the chair and will update on my progress!!! For all those interested I have listed on my Etsy site a number of different upholstery leathers and suede. All of the leather is of the highest quality and mostly of European origin. https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeatherCollector?ref=hdr_shop_menu
  13. Hey Guys! I have about 20 Spinneybeck Sabrina Hides. I have them in White, Palm Beach, Carmen, Nasturtium, and Olive. We bought them for a furniture run but our client wanted fabric instead last minute so my boss wants to unload them. We are asking 500 each shipped to your location. Here is a link to the hides as I'm not very knowledgeable of leather: http://www.knoll.com/product/sabrina-leather-hide I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!
  14. So I'm new to this forum and I've done some searching and one post I've wish I've found but still seems to elude me is a post on leather sources. I'm relatively new to leatherworking and I'm making watch straps right now from various Horween hides purchased from Maverick Leather Company out of California. The quality of the leather is very good, while the price is relatively cheap (~$5 sqft) I'm in the mood to start trying leather from different sources and other tanneries other than Horween but am not able to approach most tanneries directly because of the small amounts I buy. Is there any other good leather dealers you guys would recommend?
  15. Hey there! I need ideas on storing my leather hides that is space efficient. I have Hermann oak full half hides and I usually have anywhere from 5-10 at a time. Then I have a ton of small 2-3oz hides that are only 1-3 sqft. So not very big but I have a TON that come in and out. I currently have them in a bin you can store under a bed, but it's over flowing and not working out. My work shop consists of a large 3' tall cutting table (8'x4'). Then I have a wrap around work bench that goes along all the walls for half of my shop. On the other half of my shop (it's split in half by my cutting table) I have peg board along all of the walls so I can really store anything on the walls. I do have storage under the cutting table and the work desk but those are full. The only thing I can think of is to hang my hides from the ceiling? Any hanging ideas? Or any space efficient hide storing ideas? My shop is only about 600sqft.
  16. Hello all! I'm a very excited new member to the leather worker community. I'm putting together a small production of specialized unique wallets and I'm looking for some quality leather for them. I have found a bunch of great shops, however it seems that most of the best leather gets imported from countries in South America such as Brazil and Argentina. Can anyone point me in the right direction of who to contact down there so that I can look into buying some? I know that they will usually only work with individuals that will buy in bulk and I believe that I will be buying enough to appeas that. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
